    I'm very interested in everything you bring up about the unique form and structure in this book. Everyone reads Gatsby, so Gatsby has obviously been influential on other writers - but I wonder if giving This Side of Paradise more attention could lead to more contemporary authors experimenting with the novel form. Great video!

    I recently finished The Murder of Roger Ackroyd by Agatha Christie, which was lots of fun. I'm currently reading The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldrich by Phillip K. Dick (zany!), Wuthering Heights (very good so far, but I'm taking forever) and another GRRM recommendation: The Dragonbone Chair - which isn't knocking my socks off so far, but irs still a lot of fun. My TBR list is very long, but I want to read some spooky Halloween stories before the end of the month. As for recommendations - If you like Rebecca, I think you might enjoy an Agatha Christie Poirot mystery! Thanks for a wonderful video!

    Wuthering Heights (1939) is actually better for creepy, if you want my opinion. Yet the topics are so tough in the book neither movie really covers all the books deeper evil sides. The 1943 "Jane Eyre" is the best movie version of this story. Charlotte Brontë is my 7th favorite author and my favorite female author. She is only woman to write a book in my top ten books of all time. 7) "Vilette" by Charlotte Brontë 68) "Jane Eyre" by Charlotte Brontë 139) "The Professor” by Charlotte Brontë 163) "Shirley" by Charlotte Brontë 20) "The Tenant of Wildfell Hall" by Anne Brontë 97) "Agnes Grey" by Anne Brontë 173) "Wuthering Heights" by Emily Brontë That Wuthering Heights made my top 200 books means it is amazing. I have read 52 books already this year and I am 50 years old and I always was reading a lot. FAVORITE AUTHORS must have two books in the top 100 books of all time. 1) Leo Tolstoy (Resurrection) 2) Ivan Turgenev (Fathers and Sons) 3) James A. Michener (Chesapeake) 4) Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn (A Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich) 5) Fyodor Dostoevsky (The Idiot) 6) C. S. Lewis (The Magician's Nephew) 7) Charlotte Brontë (Vilette) 8) J. R. R. Tolkien (The Hobbit) 9) Isaac Asimov (Foundation and Empire) 10) Jane Austen (Pride and Prejudice) 11) Mark Twain (The Adventures of Tom Sawyer) 12 Anne Brontë (The Tenant of Wildfell Hall) 13) George Eliot (Silas Marner) 14) Anthony Trollope (He Knew He Was Right) 15) Dr. Burrhus Frederic (B. F.) Skinner (Verbal Behavior) 16) Charles Dickens (Hard Times) 17) Thomas Hardy (Jude the Obscure)

    I enjoyed your review. Your enthusiasm for the books really shows! I have only read one Jane Austen book so far and that was Northanger Abbey. I had the book for about 10 years before I read it, and then I watched a review like this on RUclips. And when I finally did read it, I loved it. I even joked to the reviewer that I would start an Isabella Thorpe Appreciation Society because the character was misunderstood 😂. But anyway, these 2 books sound interesting and must be well written because they clearly seem to have won your heart. Thank You for sharing.

      @@mayareviewsbooks1313 Ha! Isabella Thorpe! A lot of that was just me being a contrarian. I suppose when I first read the book I just enjoyed her and Catherine's relationship. Catherine finally had a friend to talk to. Isabella was such a lively character with personality that it was easy for me to overlook her faults. I would say "Did she really do anything THAT bad? I think Catherine is being too hard and unforgiving on her BFF." Of course, in real life, if I ever had any dealings with a woman like Isabella I would probably despise her in very short order! But I did enjoy her as a character. I figured a woman may have a different insight into Isabella than me, so when I asked the other RUclips reviewer what she thought of her, she replied something like "I loved hating her." 😁

    • @mayareviewsbooks1313
      @mayareviewsbooks1313 11 месяцев назад

      That’s an interesting perspective! I think that Isabella isn’t a villain in the way that characters like Wickham and Willoughby are but I would place her in the same tier as Mr Collins in Pride & Prejudice and Frank Churchill in Emma-pretty annoying but ultimately not super harmful haha 😄

I thought I'd share my own list of awards according to your categories: Best (nontraditional) Love Story - The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K. Le Guin. (Honorable mention: Tehanu, by the same author.) Scariest - Solaris by Stanislaw Lem. Best Non-Fiction (also a graphic novel) - Joseph Smith and the Mormons, by Noah Van Sciver. Funniest - How to Read Nancy, by Newgarden and Karasik. Saddest - Omeros, by Derek Walcott Best Children's book - (also) The Wind in the Willows, by Kenneth Grahame. Best Cover (and overall book design) - A History of the World in Dingbats, by David Byrne. Best Drama - The Waves, by Virginia Woolf. Most Disappointing - Gilead, by Marilynne Robinson. Thank you for such a wonderful review, and congratulations on finishing your resolution! Not a lot of people can say that they've read War and Peace. It's interesting to think about what Tolstoy would have done with a good editor. The Pierre/Natasha plotline has so many gems in it, but there's a lot of ranting in between. I love your thoughts on Moscow and Petersburg as the mother and father of Russia. So much of the novel is about Russia as a whole, and Tolstoy kind of turns their victory over Napoleon into a populist founding myth, because he makes it clear that the tsar had nothing to do with it. He really had is finger on the pulse of the Russian spirit with this book. I also really love the moment where Pierre laughs at his captivity-probably my favorite moment from the book. Looking forward to your next review!

    I loved your review, and I'm looking forward to hearing your thoughts on the second half of War and Peace. Comparing this novel to Anna Karenina made me wonder if a lot of the problems with War and Peace stem from the fact that Tolstoy hasn't matured as a writer yet - when he's writing War and Peace he seems to be very good at identifying flaws. Characters are flawed, battle plans are flawed, etc. But aside from fanfiction elements, there isn't a lot of positive work being done in terms of characters and outlook. By the time he writes Anna Karenina, I feel like Tolstoy has developed a kind of writerly empathy. Flawed characters in Anna Karenina feel more interesting rather than irritating. And as a whole, Anna Karenina is oriented more toward a positive development of life and a hopeful outlook toward the future - rather than the negative indictment of the past that we read in War and Peace. Just some thoughts. Another great video!

    As a big fan of the movie, I would love to sit down with this book and give it the time and attention it deserves. I read the first part and read/skimmed the rest for an English class, and I remember Forster's dialogue (like you said) really stood out. I love George Emerson-and I also really love his father. Such a wonderful video about what might be my very favorite book. Tolstoy's masterpiece is so great because everyone can take something different from it, and your insight is profound. I love your discussion of Dolly. I hadn't thought about her character as such an important part of the novel's message, but it makes sense when you put it that way. The "bloodless revolution" and mending the machine really interest me. Tolstoy is really tapping into some fascinating forces at play in his contemporary Russia. One can only wonder what would happen if we had had a Levin instead of a Lenin... Much to think about. Great video as always. I hope to see you tackle Little Women sometime!

    Thomas Hardy fan here: I love that you talk about the Shakespearean influence - I think Hardy is working with some really fun and important elements of Shakespeare that other authors tend to forget. Thanks, Thomas! Speaking of the generational aspects of the story, the book also gives details about Mick’s childhood. His parents were abusive toward each other and neglectful toward him. That gives some insight into why he is the way he is. He thinks he’s destined to mess up everything he touches. But unlike his kids whose trauma makes them want to be better people, he uses his hard upbringing as an excuse to be a bad person.
