(Corrected) A tuned loop antenna for crystal radios
Some people don't have room to have a large antenna for crystal radios.
This video explains the construction and use of a 4x4 foot tuned loop antenna as an option.
This produces a crystal radio with good selectivity and sensitivity.
Note: This is a corrected version of a previous video but youtube won't let me easily replace a video so I will put this one up and then later delete the one with the error.

There are baluns on the market that sell for about $1.00 an there are others that sell for about $10. I bought some of each and compared them on my antenna using my TV tuner. The results may surprise you. This is partly a video responding to someone else who did the same sort of test.

    Bravo, bravo, bravo! You are the first to use a simulator to investigate this dastardly mystery. The 1N5711 has a 2 pF at Zero volts. I think the 1N34A has about 0.2 pF -- but not sure. Though the I-V curve of the 1N34A diode should be more linear than the 1N5711, so perhaps less distortion, not accounting for the capacitance though. Of course, the original crystal radios use highly inductive ear pieces, where as your ear plug is mostly capacitive.

    • @kensmith5694
      @kensmith5694 3 месяца назад

      The small capacitance is small enough. The tuned circuit has 100s of pF on it so a difference in capacitance is not an issue at these levels 1N34 = 1pF at 1V back bias 1N5711 = 2pF at 0V back bias I found the distortion not to be much of an issue when listening with my ears. Yes, my ear phone is almost entirely a capacitive load. The audio output will appears as a series resistance to that capacitance. The question seemed an important one to look into

    Those small loops in the wire at the T joints will hurt the efficiency of the antenna by a lot. The better way would be to put notches in the t joints for the wires to set in, about a 1/4" apart.

    • @kensmith5694
      @kensmith5694 6 месяцев назад

      Part of my goal was to not modify any of the plumbing parts. Your observations are correct[1]. Also if I had more gap between the wires, the stray capacitance would be less and I could likely have used 5 or 6 turns. [1] I did make the loops over the T joints so they all went around the same direction. This meant I added some inductance in the process.

    Great video, thanks. It's good to understand WHY many of the crystal set designs now have a load resistor. When I was playing with crystal sets back in the late 1950's, the 1958 Allied Radio Catalog only had a dozen Germanium point contact diodes and the iN34A was half the price of the others. Good easy to build method for a homebrew variable capacitor. Thanks Ken When I was experimenting with building radios I ended up taking about 6-inches of 3/4” EMT conduit, sliding that over 6-inches of 1/2” rigid conduit and putting about 8-inches of 3/8” stainless steel tubing inside of that. Put a wire lead under some hose clamps on the end of each of the metal tubes and you’ve got a 0-pF to 2500-pF variable capacitor. It was easy for me to make from scrap pieces of conduit as I’m a plant electrician, but the cost of materials from Home Depot for anybody else would be less than $15 and you could probably make 3-4 of them.

    We used a 10k resistor as a "diode load" on covert WW2 "crystal sets", the crystal was carefully mounted in a broken torch bulb, the old filament remains made the contact onto the surface of the crystal, I think it was a iron or sulphur pyrite found sometimes in a lump of coal, It needed careful setting up and then care not to knock or move it, fine adjustment was done with a hair fixed to a match,

    I recently purchased a very affordable resistor box with 6 knobs from Ebay that would be perfect to dial in the exact resistor value needed. I may try it in the future. However, you mentioned you found a manufacturer that's still making the real diode. Why not provide this source so we can obtain the real diodes? I just checked my diodes labeled 1N34A and they do not have the cat whisker appearance. Surely there must be a way for amateur builder's to measure this leakage value and determine if their diodes are real?

    • @kensmith5694
      @kensmith5694 11 месяцев назад

      To measure the leakage put about 3V from a supply onto a series combination of a 100K resistor and a back biased 1N34. Measure the small voltage on the 100K and do some math. Your meter will be at least a 1M in parallel with the 100K so the measure should be good.
