AmbionicA - Vocal effects chain emulation Front Line Assembly Lifeline (studio session series XVII)
Studio Session Series vol XVII demonstrates a custom vocal effects chain created to emulate industrial music legend Front Line Assembly vocalist, Bill Leeb. The song, Lifeline is from FLA 1992 album Tactical Neural Implant. To create the unique vocal sound of Bill Leeb, AmbionicA used Universal Audio, D16 Group, Antares and Arturia plugins. The project was written using Ableton Live and Vegas to edit the video content. Bill Leeb has an incredibly unique voice and the attention to vocal effects processing is unrivaled. His is the most complex and difficult to emulate of any vocalist or band I've encountered. Similar to an actor playing a role, he creates an original vocal sound to fit into...

    Fantastic. I really appreciate the work you put into these chains and videos. I have two albums worth of vocals to record very soon and learning how those sounds were achieved (or modern approach to) is quite helpful. I hope to add some of my own flavor into said tracks but having a fair idea of how to achieve certain sounds is very valuable, thank you.

    I read somewhere when touring, Oghr (and cEvin) use a Korg Kaoss Pad to warp them in real-time (chaining fx together much like your chain here). I'm looking forward to Korg releasing this summer an affordable 'mini' simple DIY version of the pad called the 'Korg NTS-3 Kaoss Pad' to go to town. It can only chain 4 fx at a time, but Overdrive/Compressor/Flanger/Reverb works. It also has a library function for users to create and upload infinite sounds. For now its cool just noodling with guitar fx pedals that do the same if not better!

      the joy is in the experience. so many incredible ppl have shared with me. i hope my sessions are insightful or helpful to others. in regards to this specific post, dragging the choral sample into granulator synth was most enjoyable and finding the woodpecker tapping sheet metal added a natural evolving rhythm and that was most satisfying. i find that i'm using the UAD Century Channel on most of the industrial vox presets i'm creating and the C-Vox does a great job. My bloodhound was in the room snoring through most of this post. lol!!!!. I hope you got something out of this post or at the least enjoyed it. it's all for fun or what is it for? = :)

    An effect I have found useful to simplify the amount of plugins per track is a multi-channel pitch shifter for vocals with a slight bit of reverb and distortion. Although I use it for Aggrotech genre vocals which is different than the SP sound. I have been a fan of SP since I was in school in the 80s they have been a major influence for me as well as others of the genre. I remember the first single I heard from SP Gods Gift Maggots, I was blown away and have been a fan ever since.

    Do you have Omnisphere and Keyscape? There is a patch in Keyscape Creative - You get Keyscape Creative for free if you own Omni and Keyscape - that is a rhodes with modulation and a huge, dark, reverb that sustains for a long time. I want that patch as s, with the reverb baked in, but people say you can't sample reverb, because every sample will have be another instance of reverb and it'll be a huge mess. Do you know this to be true? The patch is called 'Black Hole Rhodes', by the way.

      i'm a huge industrial music fan. the lesson that genre teaches is to ignore all lessons. Ever listen to Thrill Kill Kult? In theory their samples should destroy tracks but they are brilliant at creating an entire track based around the character of a single sample. Countless examples but yes, text book response is sample sound dry so you leave options open later on. However, if it's the effect that makes the sound unique then why would anyone omit it? go with your instincts. you will learn and know when u f'd it up so u don't repeat mistake. best of luck to you!!!>

    • @ambionica
      @ambionica 3 месяца назад

      hi, i've never listened to Whumpscut but had friends who were fans. i just took a listen and believe the older stuff could be accomplished with an ART or Digitech rack multi-fx circa ealy-mid 90s with a distortion stomp box. after trying sooo many pedals on vocals back in the day, i found this to be best for industrial vocal = DOD Digitech FX56 American Metal. It's purple and i'd recommend putting on an aux with a gate inserted on the distortion so it kicks on only when u scream. On the newer track i heard i think it could be accomplished using Izotope Vocalsynth. i'm a big fan of Universal Audio plugins and now almost exclusively use them on vocals. best wishes!!!.

    Excellent! You are absolutely correct that Skinny Puppy overall had a passion for experimenting with audio/sound tools without worrying too much about rules or obligations to follow what's worked well for others before them. (The way they used the 909 drum machine, for example.) Understanding the core principles and laws of physics in audio, recording, and sound design overall are beneficial. Definitely. But these days with software, especially if armed with at least some basic knowledge and experience, one is only limited by their imagination. Thanks for sharing your exploration of a rare vocal sound and band started decades ago that new generations are still discovering.

    I get that. But isn't it true about any modular system ? It's an ecosystem on it's own, and difficult to integrate into a mix. I play acoustic piano and I love it, but to fit in a mix I record on Pianoteq (VST) for my acoustic piano has too much low end, too many harmonics, etc.... And in a mix the VST sounds better, but to play along, the real instrument is the stuff to go for ! I guess DFAM is a real nstrument (a wild one :) )
