    Good morning, I enjoyed the program. another great entertaining and educational episode. Meshtatstic seems to be a great EMCOM tool. In addition to coax loss, Connectors is another loss concern Greg clued me in on . I have had experience like Greg mentioned, Six open and no phone and cw happening but FT8 is active. I agree, digital should not be on the same playing field with phone and cw. looking forward to the next episode. 73

  • @wa5azqhamradio

    Enjoyed the segment about FM simplex. Learned a lot. The loss chart on the different types of coax was very informative. And I one Million percent agree with the notion that digital modes should have their own SEPARATE categories for contests-by themselves- and not be counted with other categories in any way, shape or form. IMO the digi modes have their place, just like HTs; but not in contesting unless it's a contest specifically for them alone. I don't know if anyone else noticed and I haven't done any specific research yet, but in the raw scores for June VHF, it seemed the overall number of entries was low. That could be a number of factors I guess: summertime/vacations, the ARRL-LoTW issues, etc. Great show though. Keep up the great work. I know there's a lot that goes into it. 73! Michael-WA5AZQ

    Why do people dislike FT8 so much? What is the value to FT8 and what are the negatives? I have no working knowledge of FT8. Would like to learn more on it or more on why I should avoid it.

    • @joekrepps
      @joekrepps Месяц назад

      I might be off on this (disclaimer) but I’m going to give it a shot. FT8 was designed as a weak signal mode, created to be used to determine propagation conditions. To me, that’s the plus side. It’s surprising how far very weak signals can travel. An indication for potential communication using other modes (I.e. analog). The downside is, I believe there is an automatic mode allowing you to make connections while you’re away from your station. Some would call them QSO’s because, technically, two way communication between stations happened. People will go after WAS or DXCC using FT8 and it can happen in a reasonably short period of time. However… There are those of us who have committed to two way communication between two people, as the definition of a completed QSO. To me, automatic FT8 is like you buying a nice sports car (your radio) then hiring a driver (your computer). You wave goodbye to the driver as he takes your car out for the day while you make quiche. When the driver comes back with your car, you tell the world what a great driver you are. Not really the same as you acquiring the skills to be a great driver and maybe making mistakes you have to fix. Put another way, self driving cars might be a hit with the nerds among us but I’m pretty sure it will be a long, long…long time until we see self driving race cars more popular than human driven race cars. I’m not opposed to digital modes as long as there’s a human at the controls. I’ve been tempted to try QRP EME and meteor scatter. I live under a major east to west flight path for commercial and military aviation so airplane scatter is a possibility. Those would be great situations for digital modes. As someone trying really hard to get Mobile DXCC (currently 75/100), I’ll be d@mned if I give credibility to “FT8 DXCC”. ARRL’s website lists ~38 Hams with Mobile DXCC compared to ~370, for example, who have QRP DXCC…no easy feat! If FT8 interests you, go for it. …just, please, don’t tell me about “your” accomplishments. I know the difference. 73 de WB3CFN

      Unless your going to be doing narrow band digital modes on 23cm the radio standalone is fine. Honestly once the radio warms up if your only operating 23cm the fan never comes on because TX power on 23 is only 10 Watts. I have two 9700's and use both of them stock with the exception being I did add some ceramic wool over the reference oscillator RF shielding can for insulation. That alone stabilized the frequency considerably as the fan cycles on and off when in 2/70.

    I did not know this. But How do I know at what point to take the glasses off? If I'm wrong and there's too much glare on the edge won't I burn my retina?

    • @andreaslack8379
      @andreaslack8379 4 месяца назад

      That is a very good question. And yes you don't want to risk it. In a simple sense it will become fairly dark and looking thru your solar glasses safety glasses you will see nothing. At that point totality begins. If you have timed out how long totality will be at your location that is when you start your timer. Personally I would give a good 10-15 seconds margin before I go looking. In 2017 I was using a telescope (and will do this eclipse) and then it gets to nothing in telescope with sun filter it is pretty clear it would be safe to look directly. I grant without the telescope there may be a point where some tiny amount of direct sunlight is still there that with sun safety glasses on you don't see anything. This giving it 10 to 15 seconds margin. There are phone apps to help time it as well as web sites to get the specific times it is safe. For me in 2017 I relied on my telescope with filter to know for sure when the last sliver of sun was covered. I knew I had about about three and a half minutes to set myself a timer for 3 min to be safe. As happened, I was viewing from a Walmart parking lot with lots of others and others had better timing than myself and some were giving countdowns to when glasses needed to be back on.

    I run 10 GHz and my favorite mode is rainscatter. There are folks in the microwave circles that have made contacts out to 600-800 Km via rainscatter while running anywhere between 2 and 10 Watts. I run 2-3W into a converted DirecTV dish with 34 dB gain (measured on an antenna range at a Microwave Update conference quite a few years ago), and thus about 6000W ERP.

      My station and operating ends at the 23cm segment, I have been intrigued of late by 10 GHz....and some of its capabilities with a small dish. I would love to use it for EME, mostly due to it's small dish size - I have done at a friends station a couple of rain scatter and that is fascinating stuff......I just did not get to do enough of it to get a real feel.

Greg introduced me to weak signal uhf vhf from then on I was hooked . I was always told that uhf vhf was line of sight , when I made my first ssb contact to Florida I was amazed at the ability to make dx contacts on uhf vhf via Tropho. I also love speratic E contacts on 2 meters in the summer .Great info on on emergency coms. I have been trying to set up an informal neighborhood com net on fmrs for emergency situations .
