Thank you for the video. I’m new to the hobby and need a source for replacement brushes on this motor. Is there a source for the brushes? Perhaps a specific model of slot car, or other cheap train models that could be scavenged?

That is the exact locomotive I got for Christmas one year in the mid-eighties. I still have it, but it’s in parts…something malfunctioned at some point in the 90s. I believe I still have all of the parts…really need to dig it out and get it going again. That blue/green really pops!

These things were weird to me at first but they've kinda grown on me, and for $20 or less each, I can say I'm pretty satisfied lol I've got one # 1261 and three # 638s

You might try DOT3 automotive brake fluid. I've been using it for better than 40 years with positive results, just let it soak and then scrub with a tooth brush.

Dan, I’m impressed. I just got my Chattanooga 638 out of storage after 50 years. I have a young friend to give it to. I don’t know anything about repair, but I can’t get it to run. It looks great. Any tips? I’m getting 18v on my tracks.

Great video!! As far as the armature/commutator, mine is damaged. Any source for replacement? Not sure if the amx slot cars that use the pancake body are interchangeable.

Great job!!!! I have to start taking apart a bachmann Amtrak metroliner that I bought used off of eBay is getting power but the motor is not turning over so I have to take it completely apart and do a resto like what you did to your locomotive.... You gave great tips!
