Love the quad man, ive done alot of work to mine and its coming out perfect. Had a question tho how did you do that custom intake?
Awesome 400 man, little late but i have a fan hooked up as well, but anytime i run it, it just drains the battery, do you know what the problem could be?
Sounds like you got a charging system problem. These use the stator to charge the battery while the motor is running. Kinda takes the place of an alternator. It should be charging at way more than a fan could be drawing. Usually 13.5 volts or more. If its getting weak it could be only putting out enough to keep engine running nothing more.
@ okay, ig new stator it is lol, appreciate it.
I doubt ill get a reply from this old video, but how did you convert to needle bearings? Any part numbers?
I will always reply to this video. I do not have any part nunbers sorry. What i did was measure the inner diameter of the pivot points. I had to drill about half a mil out to get a proper press fit and got bearings and seals that were a press fit. I had to spin the shafts down in a lathe also. It was about 5 years ago and i never had to touch them again. I have since sold the whole setup and went to lonestar DC-4 long travels
@brentpfeiffer4043 Thanks for info, I just installed these arms but was worried about how long the bushings would last, I'm not sure if they have since redesigned them or if they still use the same material you said doesn't hold up.. So far I just grease the hell out of them and hoping for the best.
No problem man. Glad to help. They were using delrin back when i got them. I went through 3 sets of bushings in a year. They were garbage. Alba was great about it tho. Sent me them free of charge everytime. They just didnt hold up.
Awesome build 💪! What mods did you have to make to mount the yfz carb and make it fit?
@@jeremyperez5293 its wasnt just a bolt on fit for sure. First the flange on the cylinder head had to be heated and expanded and with alot of force it did eventually pop in. First time it took alot of force. Since that it has gone in and come out easy. Airbox side i had to cut the factory tube. Oval a piece of exhaust pipe on one end and used a rubber ferco for the other side that fit both the pipe and carb and hose clamps on all of it. Where it got tough was the carb on a 07 yfz450r is the same as a yamaha motorcycle. This means its set up for a push-pull throttle cable. Meaning its very tall at the top. I had to cut off the top corner of where the push cable would have been. And jb weld the hole shut so it didnt get packed full of mud. I also had to shim the back of the gas tank up slightly with just a few washers under the white plastic shield under the tank. If i didnt it would have been resting on the top slide cover on the fcr carb. Being honest i think you can find fcr39mx carbs off other bike and quads that fit easier. But i got the one i have for a killer deal. And modifying it wasnt out of my ability. I do 100% suggest the r&d flex mixture screw. And the r&d powerbowl 2. It has an adjustable leak jet and can be done with a long flat tip screw driver while fully installed and even while running. I have to adjust that alittle everywhere i go. And only way to change that leak jet normally is to completely remove the carb bowl and its a tiny little flat tip that normally strips very easy.
Thank you very much for getting back to me. This is really helpful, appreciate the help!
@@jeremyperez5293no problem! Glad to help!

Do the trx450r hoods line up good?
On 05 and up plastics they line up with the factory holes for the hood. Remove the headlight and put bolts with a nut through where the rubber grommits are for the factory hood. I riveted the bottom tabs to be sure it was secure.
What did you use to cap off the end of your subframe?
Mud motorsports actually did it. They just used those push in plastic plugs. Not sure of size though.

Where did you get the needle bearings for the a arms u think they will work on other alba a arms
I did them custom. I drilled out the a-arms about .020 and micrometered them. Ordered wide needle bearings off line that were now a press fit for the size i drilled them to. I then spun the shafts outer diameter down to size on the lathe. Got seals for both sides that were the same size inner and outer as the bearings and shaft. Greased them to keep water out. Full custom deal. No kit out there i found would fit so i made it myself.
Do you know if you can find needle bearing that are the right size that way you don’t have to drill out the arms or spin down the shafts
@@ThatexMason nope i would have 100% taken that route if it was available to me. The ones i used were as skinny as they make that can handle the load and forces of motocross racing.

That’s a badass 400, I have a 2013 400x and it’s all suited up for mx but there’s some other things I’m looking at. I have Alba racing nerf bars and there ok, not really that durable but they get the job done, but I want rath nerf bars but they cost 500 and that’s crazy for nerf bars but those houser nerf bars you have look great but i have no clue where to find them and if there costom, also I still have the factory grab bar/sub frame, and I would love to take it off and put that hmf grab bar u out on and if u have any input for a new better carb that would work pls let me know,
The houser nerf bars i have were right about the same price as rath. Houser doesnt make 400ex nerf bars anymore though. I was lucky enough to live 45 minutes from there headquarters. After talking with them they told me the trx450r ones are identical besides the cross bar. They hooked me up with a cross bar change to work with my 400ex. They did tell me then they were discontinuing the 400ex nerf bars. The subframe was done by mud motorsports in indiana. They welded the tabs and removed the factory bar. They also powdercoated and gusseted it for me aswell. At the time which was about 4 years ago it was 350 dollars plus shipping. The carb i would 100% go with an fcr carb. They are far superior to any round slide carb. I am running a 39mm fcr off an 07 yfz450r rightnow. Top 5 best mods i have done. Tuning it is a real chore. But man does it make some serious power and the throttle response is like fuel injection. I would venture to say i have somewhere around 800 dollars in the fcr swap. Carb. R&D powerbowl. Different needle. And jets. Its expensive and requires alot of tuning ability. The fcr has more jets(leak jets, air jets, & fuel jets) and more adjustments that can be made.
Can you post links to do the air intake tube ? Like where you got the tube and ring for plastic and sizes
3" flexable intake tubing from autozone. I then ordered a 3" intake tube flange for a boat off ebay. That i was able to thread the intake tubing into and gave me a flange to put bolts into. The stainless piece is off ebay aswell. Its actually for a bumper exit exhaust for a race car. It goes around the pipe so they can cut the plastic out further and not melt it. The air box end the 3" intake tube actually slides right over the factory rubber. I put a piece of exhaust pipe in it to make it rigid and used a clamp on it. Hasnt came off yet. The intake tube will oval alittle when you put the seat on.
@@brentpfeiffer4043 really 3" fit in there? You don't have the link you got the fender flange from do you ? And thanks bro for the reply
@@mikecolwell5387 if you could find 2.5 i would go with that. The 3" fit but its a hell of a tight squeeze. RUclips likes to block me when posting links to anything for some odd reason. Very nice machine! I'm out of Ohio myself. Where is the performance shop you were saying you used? Looking for some quality engine work for my YFZ450X. Thanks!

Right on the PA border. A mile from last exit on turnpike. Cant honestly vouch for there engine work. I did that all myself. But all the services i used from both places were really professional and looked great!
Hi, sorry it’s a bit late, what did you do to remove the lights and put that like cover? What’s the name? Thanks
My quad started life as an 05 400ex. So putting the hood on required almost zero modification. Just remove the headlight and factory hood that just pops on and replace it with a maier 04-05 trx450r hood. The holes lined up with the places the factory hood attatched.

What piston are you running?
A custom made CP 87mm. 12:1 stroker piston. To work with a hotrods stroker crank i had to have it custom made. No one makes and sells them anywhere. The wrist pin had to be moved and the skirts shortened for clearance. CP was able to access the 89mm piston specs and make it from those. Since there any many places that make the 89mm piston.
What oil did you run ?
Amsoil 10w50 dirtbike oil
@@brentpfeiffer4043 Did it benefit the bike in any way?
@@jerkfalife amsoil in general i feel did. It made it make less concerning noises when on the rev limiter noticed that right away when i switched from gn4 or even the lucas i ran before amsoil. But when i did the custom everything stroker motor build i went with the 10w50 as kind of a best of both worlds. Alot of built race quads run 20w50 and so far the 10w50 seems like the best of both worlds.
@@brentpfeiffer4043 Thanks for the information I’m going to order me up some for my bike this week and hopefully I’ll get it before the next time I ride and other recommendations for the 400ex such as mods ?
@@jerkfalife all depends on what your looking to do with it. I will tell you if you go for a full big bore build the stock carb is a huge restriction. You will out run that restrictive round slide fast. One of my favorite mods and most notable gains was the fcr carb. Its as close to fuel injection as you can get. Also it 100% solved all the "cold blooded" 400ex problems. With the fcr it starts in zero degrees first time everytime. Throttle response is instant. Now it was one of the more expensive mods but well worth it in the end.
Man that is a very sweet ride. I am in the process of upgrading my 05 400 ex Great job!
Thanks! If you have any questions about your build feel free to ask away! I like helping people with there builds. And 400ex's i know like the back of my hand. I still need to do an updated walk around. As the quad has changed alot since this video.
@@brentpfeiffer4043 how can I call u... I have a couple questions to ask
What is done to it
The list is too long. But the motor is a custom cp 13:1 87mm stroker piston. Crankworks balanced hotrods +4mm stroker crank. BP full race porting. Kibblewhite +2mm intake and exhaust valves. High rev valve springs and titanium retainers. Magnum stage 2 cam. Hinson bulletproof clutch basket and clutch kit with 20% stiffer springs. Crf450 timing chain. Being fed by a fcr39mm yfz450r carb. The only thing left stock on the whole quad is the case halves. I went through it over the winter and changed ever bearing-bushing-seal. Trans was sent off to be polished and coated. And the case halves were vapor blasted. Quads on its 3rd frame. Which the newest one is fully gusseted and re-enforced for obveous reasons.
Recluse racing clutch
To my knowledge they never made one for the 400ex. I have a buddy with one on his ktm525 and honestly im not a fan anyway. I did a full top and bottom end rebuild since this video and part of that rebuild was a full hinson setup.

You should put a 440 big bore with vp115 and get the cycra pro bent barkbusters and put hyper bead locks
Check out some of my other videos. I did a custom stroker 87mm. So when you do the math it is technically a 440cc. I run vp110 and have hiper beadlocks on my trail/xc set of rims and tires. Never was a fan of the cycra hand guards though. I like my acerbies rallys. They have held up through alot of hard crashes.
But one thing its hard too beat a ole tractor 400ex them are the best quads honda has ever built I believe
do u know what size needle bearings i need for my 2001 400ex? they are shot an if they are better id rather go with them.. and u def earned a subscriber..and any tips on changing my swing arm bearings as well, i am about to order them ive seen video where they drill and tap the end or somethin since i guess its hard to get out.. i saw a special tool for it but if u know of easier method that would be helpfull..thanks in advance
The needle bearings for the a-arms are for alba +2 gullwing arms only. Not stock a-arms or anything else. Stock a-arms use bushings. I would use pivot works for those and the swing arm bearings. Replacing swingarm bearings can be a super hard task. Most of the time the bolt is seized in the case halves of the engine and requires alot of force to come out. I have had to torch them out and 90% of the time they have to be cut out in sections. I had one we worked on for about 5 hours as it was seized in every bushing.
@@brentpfeiffer4043 ok thanks i appriciate the advice for sure

Thanks! Violent was what i wanted! Shes a ripper no doubt!
Also your nerf bars. You said you worked with houser to make a different cross bar to make them fit. Any idea about how I would go about asking them to do the samething? like those alot more than the team Alba I've got.
They offered them for the 400ex when i purchased them. But what they told me when i picked them up from there headquarters (about 35 minute drive) they told me they were trx450r nerfbars that all they did was open the box and put a different cross bar in. I always try my best to purchase from local places and they were very easy to deal with. But i do know alot of places are stopping production of 400ex stuff. I would send houser and email and see if they still make the 400ex pro bounce nerf bars. They may still have some cross bars and 450r nerfbar kits?
How did you fab up the air intake on the side? Also the aluminum bracket on the outside where do you get that?
What i did was i got some of the flexable intake tube from autozone. 3" and i used a plastic boat intake flange i found on ebay. The aluminum bracket is actually what they use on drag cars that do a fender exit exhaust. Found it on ebay aswell. The 3" flexable intake tube actually threaded right into the boat intake flange and then i just drilled the holes to match the aluminum bracket. The other end of the flax tube goes right on the airbox where the factory snorkle would have gone. I traced a piece of outerwares off an old air box cover i had and put it over it to keep dust and stuff out. Cant honestly say it does anything for performance. But i think it looks really cool and it is ducted into the airbox so its functional.

They are alba long travel gull wing a-arms. I purchased them about 6 years ago. And im pretty sure alba stopped making them 2 years ago. You may be able to find someone selling them but there pivot bushings were garbage and i think alot of people threw them away because of it. I did a custom needle bearing upgrade on mine and they have held up great for me. The arms themselves are 4130 chromoly so they are plenty strong. What spring rate and valving did you do to run the gt thunder rear link
Not sure. I had Ishock build them to my specs. I told them i was running the gt thunder xc link and +1 swingarm. They did the rest. Shocks are due for service so they will be going to BNR this winter to be rebuilt. I also have since gotten rid of the gt thunder xc link. Couldnt stop bottoming out. Feel like they didnt set them up right before.
Brent Pfeiffer I have the gt thunder front a arms and shocks and wanted the rear link . But if it didn’t work for you I’m not gonna waste my money .. unless you were still running the stock spring that would explain why you were bottoming out
In all honesty you cant really get the gt thunder link anymore. Its hess motorsports making it since gt thunder is long since out of business. As far as springs go i have no idea. I wasnt super thrilled with Ishock as they took all my specs and i got the shocks from elka with a spec sheet and they didnt follow any of my info. I contacted them and they "claimed" none of it would make a difference. But i had to crank alot of pre-load into it to get a ride height even close. When i switched back to the stock link i was able to remove almost all of it. Its sad how much money goes into these builds and these places just fall short on everything. My lonestar swingarm powder coat looked horrible. Took half a year to get it so i wasnt sending it back. But it was over 800 dollars. You would think for the price it should be perfect.
Brent Pfeiffer right now I’m running the stock shock spring in the rear wound all the way at the lowest setting, I rode last Sunday didn’t seem to bottom out . Was hoping to revalue/spring with lowering link to make it perfect

It is a 04-05 trx450r maier hood. On stock 05 400ex front plastics. When you remove the stock hood on a second gen plastic it has all the tabs and holes that line right up with the 450r hood. I did trim the bottom edge on the plastic just alittle bit. But i ride in too much mud to remove them completely.
Just had my 2003 ported 416ex dynoed yesterday and tuned! Not a wild build by any means. Just a budget woods midrange setup. 35hp and 30ft/lbs. Mild porting, +1 Ferrea valves, stg1 hotcam, 87mm 10.8:1 JE piston on 100 octane mix. Also running stock headpipe with ground out welds for better midrange. Piped stock open box was 29hp and 20.5 ft/lbs. So i had huge torque gains!! I'd love to see your dyno sheets
Yeah i would love to see them aswell lol. But closest place to me to dyno a quad that can be trusted to touch anything and doesnt cost an arm and a leg is about 3 hours away. My seat of the pants dyno says gains are large. I only got to hit the throttle wide open one time and i was in 4th gear and it almost looped out on me. Still was running short track gearing from the previous motor. 13/38. Went to 14/39 so we will see if i can control it alittle more now lol.
@@brentpfeiffer4043 Yeah my dyno was $340. I brought it in and i was real rich, tinkered around and gained some power once it was dialed in. You wouldn't happen to have any oddball aftermarket parts for the EX would you? If so I'd be interested. I have a DuraBlue Eliminator axle used for sale. Have the locknut for it just needs a new sprocket hub. I never ended up putting it in my 400ex. Too wide i run tight trails
Those dang sprocket hubs can cost as much as a whole axle. I run a rpm dominator 2 with the race hub. Stock lock nut though. Never could keep those stupid aftermarket one from snapping in half. Have had zero issue out of stock ones when done right they will never loosen up. Only aftermarket parts i have left are a set of aluminum air shrouds. Need one tab welded back on. A used wiseco 11:1 and a new CP 12:1 piston.
@@brentpfeiffer4043 what's the bore of the CP 12:1 piston?
87mm
Sweet! Haven’t been on the forums for a long time. Still haven’t even bothered to touch my 13’ 400 lol. Been apart since October 2018 🤣
Dang man! Gotta get on it!
Brent Pfeiffer ahhh I know... really not gonna have time this summer with hay season and my lawn care business. Thinking about just dropping it off to someone.
Its a long drive. But bring it my way i will hook you up! Hell i got everything to make it a 416. Wiseco piston. Sleeve bored and ready to press in. Gaskets and all.
Brent Pfeiffer if I ever get time I might have to take you up on that
The offer stands bud! Cant guarantee the parts will still be available. I have them on few selling places. All that is needed is a new set of rings and a quick hone. Cross hatching is still visible in the sleeve as is.
How did u wire up the fan like that???
What i did is i found the head light power wire. So took out my tester and found the one with 12v that i could switch on and off with the headlight switch. I then took the positive wire from the fan ran it with an inline fuse to that wire. The ground i just ran to the coil frame ground right next to the fan itself. I did also run a small indicator light off it aswell so i can see if its off and on. Because i have bumped that switch before and turned it off on accident. The reason i did it is because i got tired of constantly replacing the "water proof" switches. They would last a few rides at best. Sometimes less.
Brent Pfeiffer I wanna do this to a 300ex I’m guessing it would work the same becasue they both have headlights and the switch
Yeah it should work no problem. Anything with a head light and switch will have to have a 12v power wire for the headlight to work. Find that wire and make sure you use an inline fuse of the proper amp rating. The spal fan comes with directions on what specific amp fuse to use. I use a 5 amp on mine. They say the lower the better as to not burn up the fan if something happens.
Brent Pfeiffer did ur fan have a connecter on the end of the wires. If so what do I do with that?
@@austingallagher2370 My fan just had cut and stripped ends on it. I used a 5/16 water proof ring terminal on the one side for the ground. And got an inline fuse with wires already on it from autozone. Used 2 blue water proof butt splices and sealing heat shink tubing for good measure.
Im currently rebuilding my 2003 400ex with wiseco 10:1 piston 416 and Ferrea +1 valves. I was not informed that the valves my interfere with the piston. Im only using a Stage 1 hotcam. Will i need my piston machined?
When we clayed the topend and measured my wiseco 11:1 87mm piston it for sure did. They were gunna be way to close for comfort. Now my custom cp 87mm stroker piston im having made does not need anymore clearance. According to them atleast. I will be claying it to be 100% sure.
@@brentpfeiffer4043 Awesome thanks! I sent my head and jug to CT Racing. He convinced me to buy a JE piston. They are already clearanced for +1 valves. Wisecos need to be machined. So now i got an extra Wiseco 10:1 87mm piston brand new in box
Thats good. JE is actually a lighter weight piston. I wanted them to make me my stroker piston but couldnt ever get anyone to answer my emails or phone calls. CP was the only place that even acnowledged my existance lol. CT racing will get you hooked up though! Atleast you dont have a 500 dollar custom piston new in box like i do. Since the first one was made wrong. Not CP's fault though. The thing is a work of art. Gunna make a nice paper weight lol
How did u get that radiator fan on I really want to put one on mine
???
Sorry i have responded twice and youtube has removed them i think? I have pictures but no idea how to get them to you. I had to fabricate custom mounts for the 4 inch spal fan.
Pm me on face book aiden Cileone
I dont have a facebook bro. Sorry.
All good where did you buy the fan at n where did u fount it
Is that carrier greasable through the swing arm
Yes it is. Its a lonestar carrier and a lonestar swingarm.
@@brentpfeiffer4043 thanks for the info sick build by the way
No problem man. Glad to help! I appreciate it. Got alot of time and money in it. And getting ready to drop more. The bottom end is starting to knock....
@@brentpfeiffer4043 totally worth putting the money into them they are bullet proof I have an 02 bone stock with a slip on scooped it up for 1200
Oh i totally agree. This is the stock crank from 05. And i beat on it hard. The previous owner didnt know there was even oil in it. I did the first oil change on it in 2009. It came out like sludge. Put a clutch and a 416 kit in it and have been railing it ever since. I dont want to think about the total amount of money i have in this quad. Its painful.
What plastics are those and where did you get the graphics?
Stock plastics. Cut the front fenders just a small amount. And graphics were done by cycleworks.
@@brentpfeiffer4043 i want to do the hood like you have and get rid of the head lights
@@Sparaco487 Gotcha. The hood is a maier trx450r hood.
@@brentpfeiffer4043 can the hood go over the headlights on a stock 400ex? Im gonna put a fourwerx hood on mine
@@417x11 Im not 100% sure. I removed the whole assembly. Just looking at it i don't think it will fit though. Headlight assembly looks to stick out way to far.
Nice quad how did you get the nerf bars to fit
Thanks! They are built for a 450r. But houser is a local company to me so i drove there and they have a different cross tube to make it for a 400ex. Everything else is identical. Just the tube that connects them in the front is different.
Brent Pfeiffer i have 2003 400ex it’s built
@@graysonreed6100 Very nice man! Whats done to the motor? I got some big plans for my motor this winter. Involving a custom made 87mm CP 12:1 stroker piston and a hotrods +4mil crank.
