Merry Xmas Richard ... garden still looks good.... I got a 4ft Dicksonia Antartica this morning for Xmas...when straight out and planted it ... When did you plant your new one ?
@@markchitty6505 merry xmas mark! 🤝 hope its been a good holiday so far! yeah certainly a bit worse for ware but the evergreens are holding strong 🌴 wow what a great gift 👌😎!! i planted my 4ft out in November last year but, put it in a small pot over winter in the place i wanted it so that i could still bring it in if we got some insane cold, but with my new 2 ft that i got a few weeks ago, ive planted it in its spot for the year, of course again if we get some crazy winter this year will bring that in, but only for the first season, the 4ft is now fully rooted so will be protected in place of course and same with the other 1ft, 6inch and the 2 babys in the ground. have you planted it deep or just placed it on top?
@@richf_tropical_garden_projects I planted it about 8 inches into the ground, and put a stake in behind it
@markchitty6505 ah yeah that should stabilise quickly,😎 lol i just placed mine right on top of the soil and staked them😂🤷♂️ tryna save every inch 😂😂😂🤷♂️ so bloody expensive these days 🤦♂️but soo worth it!!
@@richf_tropical_garden_projects I wasn't sure if I should plant it in December, but its so mild, and I thought I could always protect it on the coldest nightd...so hopefully it will be alright
@@markchitty6505 i think youve done the right thing, imo the sooner they are in the ground the sooner they are naturally spurred on to grow, i think this time of year they will still try to root, but even if you need to pull it in for a few nights if it gets cold it wont have rooted anywhere enough to cause an issue, id defo keep it well watered as well, crown and trunk, im out soaking my new one every couple days while its been above 0,

Nice tour thanks for sharing !... what are the two mature evergreen tree/shrubs along the left fence? as you look out the back
@@GrowTropicalMK thanks for watching 😎👊 definitely ready for spring already 😅 the first one on the left side is a purple rhododendron and the more spindly one behind it on the mini golf course is a red camelia, i think they are about 40 years old, they were here when we moved in, i have just lifted the canopy on them as they used to look more like giant bushes before 😂🤷♂️ i like the tree look on them
@richf_tropical_garden_projects yes easily 40 years. they look amazing, do they both flower?
@GrowTropicalMK funny enough the people who lived here before me lived in the house for nearly 50 years and he was a professional gardner and Landscaper, didnt find that out until after i moved in, but looking at some of the larger trees in the garden you can tell! yeah they both flower in spring and are covered in flowers. all the large trees in the garden flower except the huge bay tree. tbh my favourite trees from the previous owner are the laburnum golden chain trees, they look awesome in spring, huge yellow trailing flowers, cant wait for the spring tour when its all in flower 😎
@richf_tropical_garden_projects Takes a lot of dedication to get specimens like those. Golden chain as in laburnum? They look amazing, but put me off as very toxic. But then again, half the plants in tropical style gardens probably are !
@GrowTropicalMK yeah absolutely, i can tell from when i first moved in the garden had alot of effort put into it, lol then I added loads of palm trees 😂🤷♂️🌴 yeah thats it laburnum although not sure if its the cross with watereri🤔, bloody auto predict 😂🤦♂️ the seed pods can definitely be quite toxic, but yeah i agree alot of the tropical style plants have some form of toxicity, cycas and zantedesha are probably even more toxic than laburnum 🤔🤷♂️

Agree that duration of cold is a massive factor - December 2022 did massive damage to my garden, even Fatsias. One major one is hpw the plants were grown before you bought them - cold grown in UK vs a greenhouse in Italy, plants will have very different responses to a British winter.
@@TropicalDanUK thanks for watching and commenting 👊😎 yeah i absolutely agree, duration can make all the difference! another great point, very rarely mentioned, how it's been grown makes a huge difference. much of the more borderline stuff has probably never seen anything close to a frost!

im really hoping it will get through with just a mulch, wondering though if it would do better with a temporary mini green house put over it? 🤔 hopefully though just a mulch will do it 🤷♂️
@@richf_tropical_garden_projects I would put the mini greenhouse over it. I tried growing my spengleri asparagus fern outside last winter in two different locations and they both died. It's supposed to be able to take our temperatures but I don't know. I would think the Blue Star is in the same hardiness area as the spengleri but not sure.

Great way to provide protection on really cold weather days.. I actually went out last night and covered up a few more things when I saw the temp at frost.. My camelia plants and stuffing some balled up fleece in the middle heads of certain plants.. Went out this am and the garden was covered in heavey frost.. I was also able to save a capucine plant from frost by protecting it, all the other ones froze, so it really DOES work well..
thanks for watching and commenting !😎 i absolutely agree, as temporary protection it works great and keeps the morning frost off the leaves! i dont protect my camelia but its is around 40 years old and the size of trees now haha. i can understand with a smaller plant though. i think it can be a bit of extra work , but worth it nonetheless 😎🌴
I agree I only use as a temporary cover in the minus temps, then take them off when temps rise.
@@GrowTropicalMK i feel like it would do more damage than good if it were left on for months, lol ive seen cases where tree ferns grow into the fleece making it impossible to remove 😂👀

@@brocktoon8 me too haha it seems at -2 it took hardly any damage if any, but the -4 might have been too much for it, fingers crossed all the straw piled on it will have gave it some protection 😬🤔
I just made a comment but it didn't post
Have you wrapped your plants in plastic before? I was just watching some videos from a guy who was saying that's actually bad for plants, you might want to look more into that? I'm really looking forward to see how your Blue Star Fern experiment goes!! I also have one and I'd love to know if it would survive outside! I will be watching! : )
@@brocktoon8 thanks for watching and commenting 👊😎 i dont generally wrap them in plastic , i use horticultural fleece and straw for the most part but i do use plastic or something waterproof over the top of the protection to keep water out and as dry as possible but leave at least 1/3 at the bottom as just fleece and straw so it can breathe if that makes sense as air flow is important too. generally i find its the moisture that kills plants rather than the cold if that makes sense🤔🤷♂️ im hoping the blue fern does make it through id love to have it all over the garden haha 🤷♂️🌴😎

Well, if snow happened here, in Atlanta, this time of the year, the locals would go nuts, and the city would be shut down for the day! This would happen any time during the winter. We have no snow plows, except for the airport. Certainly wirh tropical style gardening you can rarely just go into a garden centre and pick up these kinds of plants - unless you live near a specialist one. If its a UK seller and they are UK grown then lilely online is pretty good option. If the plants have been force grown in a poly tunnel in Italy then they may not be hardy and often are narrow trunked and stretched etc. Definitely a bit of a minefield. Did i spot a Washingtonia in your garden? If so is that staying out? Pool is looking cool - serious man hours going into that!
thanks for watching 👊😎 i certainly agree with that, luckily over the past few years it seems to be getting more common to see the more common tropicals in local stores but yes alot of the more exotic stuff is only online so it can be a real mine feild! i think as long as you know what to expect when buying you should be ok 🤔🤷♂️ i have had to buy alot online this year and 90% has been spot on so cant complain too much! haha thanks been a real long project, but still ongoing on the channel! some serious dirt came out of that hole 😂😂🤦♂️
yes the washingtonia is staying out with minimal protection got it this year on a really good deal so gonna try it outside as its a pretty protected area its in, but going to be lucky if it gets through without issue , hoping it only defoliates and makes it through, another garden expirement this year along with the blue fern!
@@richf_tropical_garden_projects I watch with anticipation as I really like washies but I lost two in the winter of Dec 2022 - which granted was a bad one vs previous years. They were supermarket bought small and cheap so probably no hardiness at all. I'm 55 degrees north on the west coast so it doesn't get super cold but was enough to kill a lot of my plants that year.
@@TropicalDanUK ive got my fingers crossed as well, i think ill probably fleece on the coldest nights if we go below -5 or so but thinking of just some straw around the base 🤔 tbh i think 2022 it was the wet that really killed alot 🤔 i lost a few small washies that year but one clump survived up against a fence in a raised bed with straw ...and it barely survived 😂🤦♂️
The Tree Fern looks pretty healthy although I am no expert. Good location for it I think
@@GrowTropicalMK tbh im fairly happy with it, trunk is a good thickness and more like 30 inches, it was a bit dry on arrival, but nothing crazy, but what was concerning was the single large frond... im assuming its been here for most of the summer and only put one frond out as it wouldn't have been shipped from NZ like that so its grown since its been here, and it looks like there signs of 2 knuckles but one looks more black than green. i just wonder why it only put out one frond since coming to the uk 🤔 spoke with the company about it ao should be covered if its a goner lol
It is a little hit and miss, but as you mentioned often the only way to obtain a specific plant at times
@@essexhognose1808 id agree ive had some great stuff and a few ones that have struggled, i think it can depend as well on what your buying from seeds to large plants 🤔
