America’s First Guitar Pedalboards?
In today's episode we delve into story of how a guitar shop in North Hollywood, California became a hub of innovation in the development of the pedalboard during the mid 70's. This is the backstory of how a few session guitarists in Los Angeles partnered with Paul Rivera at the Valley Arts Guitar shop in North Hollywood to build some of the earliest professional pedalboards used by American guitarists. L.A. session guitar legends like Mitch Holder, Jay Graydon, Larry Carlton, Lee Ritenour, Tim May, Thom Rotella, & Dennis Budimir enlisted the help of local technicians such Paul Rivera, Chris Foreman, Mike Peterson, & the Anvil Case Co to mod their pedals and construct some of the first pro...

The Amp Behind Clapton's Best Tone?

    The Shadows used the JMI amps because they were given them and they had nothing else to use. Rick knew he’d find vulnerable people if Hank had used one and sure enough the scams began, with some JMI amps commanding extortionate prices with wild claims related to the fact the Hank & Bruce used them.. I personally have it confirmed that Steve Giles had NOTHING to do with the amps that The Shadows used, nor were they special as claimed by Music Ground to justify the price. Steve was disgusted and told me this when I put it to him, long after he quit working for them because of the dodgy stuff that had gone on.

    • @tonecast1
      @tonecast1 11 дней назад

      I think it was obvious that the limited run of Shadows JMI30s just had a different cosmetics from the standard JMI30 they were selling at the time. I wasn’t in the UK at the time they were being sold so I can’t speak to how they marketed to buyers. I wouldn’t be surprised if they were marketed as something more special than the standard models given Music Grounds questionable business practices. I’m sure The Shadows could’ve used any amps they wanted to for their reunion tour. They were likely given the JMI amps or paid to feature the JMIs on stage. Steve and I did not talk specifically about Hank Marvin and JMI so thanks for the comment sharing those insights.

I recall having a few chats with some very well informed people within the industry at the time, who knew both Clapton and AFL and they had already identified the effect of AFL had had on Clapton for some time. To my ears, the Zexcoils sound better in general, more neutral, with a nicer quack than the stock pups. Okay, with a little less bite in some positions, this is the price you need to pay for getting rid of the noise issue. In the studio this is not so much a problem, but every gigging musician will appreciate the greatly reduced noise level. Combined with a good noise gate, you are in for a very good life.

      To my ear, this particular Zexcoil set has a bright sound. Now that some time has passed I’ve found that they are hard for me to get along with tonally bc I also have a bright touch. I may try a different set from them to see if I can find a better match for my touch. In my experience I’ve found that that noiseless single coils are just as valued in the studio as they are among players performing live. Players everywhere appreciate quieter pickups as long as they still sound great. Some viewers like the sound of these. Others have preferred the stock pickups. It’s interesting to see how everyone’s preferences are truly different. Thanks for the comment.

    I came for confirmation to buy the phase 90 (or 95)…I ended up getting swayed with the versatility of the JHS. The even volume when engaged and the slight warmth were nice. And yea, Josh’s knowledge and enthusiasm are unparalleled. I loved the back to back shootout with tone controls shown. Thank you so much

      One of the best skills in life is being able to assess new information and change your mind based off that new info. I’m glad the video helped you determine that the JHS series 3 phaser was a better fit for you. Thanks for letting me know.

      I've not played one this one. I'll keep an eye out for these. Thanks for the recommendation and thanks for taking a moment to watch and comment.
