Philip J Fry: A Man Made of Time
Neither Fry, nor Futurama, could exist without time travel. In fact, there are eleven episodes that feature the trope in some fashion. This video is going to dive deep into each one of those episodes to try to get to the bottom of what Fry really is.

Id say that planet express isn't exactly a delivery company as the crew has been sent more times on missions than actual delivery jobs, so it could work more like a "peaceful" mercenary company as even when they are delivering most of the time is "transport this doomsday device into the star system of death" probably other shipping companies simply doesn't want to go to certain places, we have seen even space trucks while the planet express ship looks more like a battle rocket ship as it has multiple types of weaponry as laser guns and even torpedo hatches. Meh, maybe its a situation where Planet express is doing bad because the type of services they bring (and their success rate) but isn't doing as bad as 4 dolars of profit per year.
The Late Philip J Fry doesnt include any time paradoxes - it's a sequence of near-identical universes. Leela DOES run Planet Express... in the OLD universe. Fry, Bender, and the Professor have jumped 2 universes worth of time forward
Do you remember that one gag where they went to the edge of the universe and looked over and they saw themselves in Another Universe? Does that throw a hole in any of this
At first i thought this was just another pretentious video essay but this was honestly a really intresting watch about the different time traveling rules used in Futurama and how Fry is involved in it!
best time travel stories i remember, first was from Ducktales, Donald traveled forward into the future, but in that future he had dissapeared the moment he traveled through time so his nephews grew up crocked and evil the other was a Manga called the World God Only Knows. the protagonist travels back in time and has to save the world that without him would have been destroyed, but he was only able to travel because someone from the past left a timegate open so that someone from a possible future in wich the world was saved could be able to travel back in time to actually save the world
Jesus, the Holy Ghost and God are the same "person", that's call the Divine Trinity.
Jesus is not a demigod, he is understood to be fully 100% God, as well as fully 100% human, at least in Catholicism. It’s one of the religious mystery
i feel like the forward travel only thing is more of a always repeating but not going back type thing pretty much see it as a pattern it starts with in a empty void a big bang happens then normal stuff happens yk then the universe dies then in the empty after makes a perfect copy of the first big bang so after the second big bang its not the og universe yet its a new one still in the same timeline thats why it wasnt a paradox leela was always meant to own planet express in the first universe but in the other universes after she was not see the timeline like this 💥--------------🌀💥--------------🌀💥--------------🌀💥--------------🌀(imagen it goes forever)
Dr McNinja had a sort of "time changes" situation... but it was more that the actions caused the characters to ride the metaphorical train tracks to a different set of tracks than the ones they had been on before time travel. Hypothetically, the earlier timelines would continue on regardless, unchanged by the time meddling. So it did but didn't change things?
Another show I love that did a similar thing before Futurama did it is Red Dwarf, in which one of the main characters, Lister, ends up being his own dad. He has sex with what, well, turns out to be his own mother rather than grandmother, then takes his baby self back into the past to finalize the loop. That show also takes a more rigid approach to time travel, like the episode "Stasis Leak", where the crew go back in time and cause events that they previously put down to hallucinations, but turned out to just be interventions from their future selves. The last example I can think of is that after going past light speed, the crew see "future echoes" of themselves, whereby their future selves can communicate with their past selves not because they can see them, but because they remembered the interaction that their past selves experienced (similar to David Tennants Doctor communicating via videotape from the past in "Blink").
Time and time again, humanity finds new and interesting ways to reinvent Homestuck.
jesus is an Aasimar
I’m with you
"Time travel isn't real," he said as he sat there, marching through time.
Jesus is a lich duh
omg I re-watched that eyephone like 20 times I never realized Susan Boyle was a real meme, that makes it worse
11:26 I so disagree with this analysis of the anti-vax movement, without going deep into the anti-vax it's easier to remember that anti-vaxers during covid were largely anti-mask as well a "technology" that's super simple to understand and existed for a while.
3:24 that's actually not the case, modern science abstains from a term such of "law" this term is outdated, if evolution was just a bit older it could have been name a law as well
the stay still time traveling episode isn’t actually a paradox they don’t travel backwards at all the universe as shown just repeated the time line is consistent when the universe ends the next universe begins it’s not time traveling more like speeding up the rate of it
Cream pie doesn't mean what you think it does... I don't want to violate RUclips rules. Let's just say one dude can creampie another dude. And while a dude can creampie a gall, this could not lead to pregnancy.
Jesus is not 50% human 50% God, he's 100% human and 100% God
The fowards only time machain makes sense to me, you just have to acknowledge the universe isn't in a timeloop but that they are in fact separatie realitys so in the new one events can be changed
The first time they go to the 3rd so the second time is able to go to the 4th time and the third time doesn’t go to the fifth time so the fifth time can go to the seventh time and they don’t go back to the same moment in time they go forwards to a different moment in time
The first time they go to the 3rd so the second time is able to go to the 4th time and the third time doesn’t go to the fifth time so the fifth time can go to the seventh time
31:06 Jesus was his name. Christ was the title. So you could say Fry is a Christ. Jesus was a biblical Christ, Fry is Futurama's Christ
I also find interesting that Professor Farmsworth is a scientist, like Fry's distant relative could be anyone, but he is indeed a scientist. It's like "time" prepared all that so Fry could save the universe.
If every new universe is 10 feet lower this not only fixes the paradox at the end of the episode but the paradox of two time travel vehicles taking up the same spot since they’re not, one is above the other
That's not a paradox though. There are never two occupying the same spot because each machine exists in its own DIFFERENT universe
Considering that he’s older than the professor and Bender, and they’re all older than the current universe they’re in technically, that makes Fry the oldest thing in the universe period
I’ve always found it easiest to understand successfully ‘changing’ a static timeline, by seeing it as unreliable narration. I didn’t ‘change’ anything, I just assumed that history always went the way I set out to make it be, and that everybody just remembered it the same. Like, in Terminator, if Skynet had replaced the leader of the rebellion several years prior, with an infiltrator, that would go on to do all the same things, right up until immediately after the future date it came from passed. Or if in The Time Machine, the main character had kidnapped his love, and framed it as though she’d died in the river, and her body was just never found- then his younger self would have still gone off the deep end, and made a time machine, and his older self would just have to convince the government that she was alive, again. You can anyways change the future, just not the past; even if you’re in the past. But if it isn’t apparent that the past was changed, it may have always been that’a’way.
Yo you coming back or what if not that's fine but at least tell us don't drop banger vids and leave
Terminator rules are better described as theBill and Ted's Excellent Adventure time travel rules, because they directly call it out, and because subsequent entries in the Terminator franchise broke their own rule.
Time dilation is actually really interesting, it’s a real phenomenon that happens when objects travel fast enough. The closer an object is the to the speed of light, the less time it experiences compared to a stationary object.
21:35 you stole that joke and made it worse
wow
great video, i really enjoyed it. on a side note i would have listened to you deep diving into Hindu mythology.
Based on the title I just assumed this was a character study on fry but no way am I disappointed thanks for catching me on my toes and the good video
Futurama has the same problem that Simpsons had (but to a higher degree in that case) in that they want to appear nuanced whenever they have an episode about a serious/controversal topic (and that is something they kinda have to do seeing how their recurring characters are all kind of sleezy and stupid).
i thought this video was from the theorizer
It would be incredible if Fry was the key to aboid the robot uprising. The perfect way to end the series.
This is canon now.
12:20 most straightforward King Crimson explanation
13:32 see ireckon, that specific iterations of timelines, will always happen the same, the sequence is alredy determined the moment someone goes back in time, but in different iterations, the sequence of events is different, so leela receiving that message and writing in the cave wall would always happen in that iteration, but doesnt in the next one.
Jesus is more like gandalf than hercules i think
I like the theory, however I want to point something out. If you take your idea around 20:00 of the loop that is still a line. That single thing is enough to explain where Fry came from. If you look at a single loop it looks out of place, but only because you cannot see the line, that doesn't just explain how Fry and Bender could steal multiples of the same diamond over and over again with a loop that had a start and end but a myriad of loops between them, it also explains how Fry can apparently father his own father yet still have a root cause that isn't himself. Fry can be his own grandfather in a near infinite amount of loops, but still have a grandfather that isn't himself if one trace the line back through enough loops. That said I think its much more Futurama to accept that Fry is a being without a cause, that he appeared because he appeared and that it was always so because he willed it so. In fact with Fry essentially being a Chosen One of the Futurama universe and his relationship with the Nibblonians who we know predated the birth of the universe, if only by 17 years, it makes perfect sense that he is a not just a normal three dimensional human being. The Nibblonians act as a kind of caretakers for the universe, and while Nibbler say they lack the ability for time travel, they do still clearly have some kind of temporal insights/foresight, which is also reinforced by their third eye, which is traditionally a mystic symbol denoting foresight or insight. They step in at points in the timeline where they are needed to keep things straight, and they consider Fry an essential ally in their work even if he sometimes complicate it. If one takes this theory and runs with it, I think it also suggests that the relationship between Fry and the Nibblonians and their role as universal guardians is much deeper and that it itself may be a part of a "loop" which extends beyond the start and end of the universe itself and possibly even beyond time itself. Maybe Fry is just as much a universal guardian as the Nibblonians, if not more so, he could even be the root cause for their existence and be the explanation for how they came into being just prior to the universe itself. Which brings to mind the talk between Bender and God. If Fry is indeed a guardian of the universe/divine being playing a bumbling idiot then that would seem to be a perfect way to fix things that need that divine/supernatural touch to fix without anyone suspecting that divine intervention occurred. The only ones left knowing what really happened were Fry, the Nibblonians, and anyone else who already had higher dimensional awareness. At this point one could even start bringing Yivo and Fry's relationship with shkler on behalf the universe into it, but yeah...
I actually love the way The Late Philip J Fry handles fixing the paradox. Timeline 1: Fry, Bender, and Hubert travel forward, skip Timeline 2, and kill their Timeline 3 counterparts. In this timeline, Leela ends up successful and lonely. Timeline 2: they travel forward, skip Timeline 3, and kill their Timeline 4 counterparts. Once again, Leela ends up successful and lonely. Timeline 3: they get killed by their timeline 1 counterparts, who live on happily ever after, and Leela isn't alone. Timeline 4: they get killed by their Timeline 2 counter, who live on, and again, Leela isn't alone. Timeline 5: cannot get killed by Timeline 3, as they were killed, so this timeline is effectively the same as Timeline 1 Just like 5, 6 is effectively the same as 2, 7 as 3, and 8 as 4. Those 4 timelines loop seamless, where half the time Fry, Bender, and Hubert disappeared forever and Leela is alone, and the other half of the time, Fry, Bender, and Hubert are killed and replaced, they all live on like nothing happened. I think this works perfectly, as there really isn't a paradox, just two versions of the timeline. This wouldn't work without killing half of the time. If for example, they didn't kill their counterparts, and just took their place after they left in the time machine, it would go like this: Timeline 1 goes to Timeline 3, Leela is alone. 2 goes to 4, Leela is alone. 3 goes to 5. Leela isn't alone because of Timeline 1. 4 goes to 6. Leela isn't alone because of 2. 5 goes to 7. Leela isn't alone because of 3. 6 goes to 8. Leela isn't alone because of 4. Do you see the issue? After the first two timelines, it would be impossible for Leela to wind up alone to write the message to Fry in the cave. If this were how it went, if would be paradoxical because in this theoretically infinite cycle of universes, there would be a discrepancy where no Leela after the "first two" could end up alone to write the message for Fry. Killing their alternate selves is exactly what fixes this paradox, by making it possible that there are still universes where Leela will write the message to Fry. I love that the Futurama made this, and topped it off with the professor saying "Pow, we took care of the time travel paradox." Perfect cherry on top of this beautiful thought experiment.
You have no idea how many times I've tried to come to this conclusion.
Another way to fit The Late Phillip J Fry into your theory would be if they didn’t loop around to the same timeline, but moved into the timeline after, and the timeline after that. Start in timeline 1, move through the heat death of the universe into timeline 2, blow past the stopping point then the heat death of timeline 2 into timeline 3. Hence why the Professor says “it appears this universe is x feet lower than ours.” It’s not a loop where they moved up x feet, they’re 2 timelines in the future
Another solution is just the thing that Walmart has done to its employees, where you, as the business owner, take out a life insurance policy on your employee, don't tell them about it, have them die, and then collect it as the beneficiary. But it's likely just that he's a university professor and Planet Express is a side gig that doesn't have to make money. As for why he seems so ready for his employees to die, I'm always ready for a coworker to not show up because my work is a revolving door. He's lost an unknown total number of previous crews over decades of time. He's probably expecting it to happen at any time, that any mission or delivery they make could very well be their last. It's like optimistic pessimism: Expect the worst. You're either right or pleasantly surprised.
Jesus is human
15:00 I personally disagree, regarding the “time travel so far forward that you loop around” interpretation. Your interpretation seems to be that it’s a true loop, whereas mine is that it’s still a linear time scale. In my perspective, it’s like a repeating pattern, with slight changes (like exact position). Because there’s no traveling to a previous time, there’s no true paradoxes. The only “paradox” would have been the extra Farnsworth, Fry, and Bender, but that’s more of a weird universe clone situation.
I think you can just join the police force without the right career chip or a career chip at all. Sort like how Fry and Bender joined the military just to buy gum at a lower price. Or how they all got drafted to fight against the Omicronians.
