Atheist SURPRISES audience! The Apologist's Evening Prayer (C.S. Lewis) Alex O'Connor @CosmicSkeptic
Did C.S. Lewis repudiate reason as a means of comprehending and defending God? Atheist thinker Alex O'Connor @CosmicSkeptic surprised the audience of his dialogue with Justin Brierley @justinbrierley reciting Lewis's "The Apologist's Evening Prayer" from memory, before giving his take on its meaning.

i always found the problem of suffering one of the strongest evidence for the existence of God at the personal level. Reducing suffering, facing struggles, overcoming pain, is the primary thing the brought me to God. Trying to grow up without becoming a bad, resentful person is the main challenge in Life. Saying that God probably doesn't exist because of the suffering in the world, sounds to me like saying that Hideo Kojima probably doesn't exist because Metal Gear Solid is too difficult.

Do the people here posting about how much they like Alex's sincere search for God realize how his non-resistant non-belief conflicts with the Bible's declaration that God is adequately revealed and that all are subject to judgment who don't believe? Alex is the embodiment of the divine hiddenness argument. He is an atheist hero in that he makes this so very clear. Christians who can't accept that say "he is so close" and hope and pray he converts. Otherwise, they would have to say he just wants to sin and refuses to bow down before his Lord. Well, which is it?

Reason can only take you so far, (the Christian) God is utterly uninterested in mere mental assent to his existence. God want's you to love him and have a relationship with him, that is not a mental pursuit. Think of it this way I have a friend Eric lets say that I give you all facts about him, do you know him and love him? Of course not you've never met him. A reason based approach can get you to accepting God's existence but that is the tiniest step of what God wants from you. The real heavy lifting at that point remains ahead of you.

    • @truncated7644

Like the saying goes "You ain't seen nothing yet" It's OK to reject organized religions, pastors, evangelists and what not but it is foolish to reject God because of them. Don't be a fool like someone who closes his eyes and believes that no one sees him. That's the level of intelligence of the atheist.

I feel all of this in society, Religion and Politics, is rigged. The more that Conservative politics advances people are gonna move towards religion to cope and/or survive along with it. The more Liberal politics advances people are gonna gravitate towards secularism or atheism to cope and/or go along with it. So it’s in the hands of human power and politics that dictates whether people will want to believe in God or not. It’s all rigged.

The New Atheists face a lot of criticism, much of which I believe is undeserved. Linking atheism to “wokeness” or civil unrest in today’s political and economic climate seems disingenuous. These polemics were not responsible for creating a new cultural crutch to replace religion but to highlight its falsehoods, shortcomings, and hypocrisy, showing that it is not necessarily a positive influence. Their work was exactly what I needed at the time because I wanted to know if Christianity’s truth claims were valid. I didn’t realize I was in an information bubble, believing I had convincing evidence for Christianity. However, reading the Bible filled me with doubts, making it seem more like a human creation than divine. Watching debates by Sam Harris, Christopher Hitchens, Bart Ehrman, and others has helped me immensely. I’ve grown as a person and no longer feel bound by the guilt and limitations of my old religion. I now live a much more fulfilling and productive life, and I’m thankful for the contributions of the New Atheists.

It’s so interesting that Alex has a very dogmatic sense of what belief in God is and how one should come to it. It is his new atheism foundations coming through in large part but it is really a reflection of his modernity, i.e. his foundational beliefs in individual authenticity and scientific rationalism as the highest values and thus the only true or real or legitimate way to arrive at Christian (or any) belief.

Despite the rise in evangelicalism and its crossover into politics, religion in the United States is actually on the decline... people just don't care anymore , the more they grow up , except for the ones that Didn't grow up and still have the need For an imaginary friend . it's appalling to teach your children that strength and perseverance comes from an outside source , rather then themselves , absolutely APPALLING ... all based on a story , that doesn't BELONG TO ANY OF THE PEOPLE TODAY , not even the ones who FOUND IT IN A DAMN CAVE AND CALLED IT THEIR OWN HISTORY , the jews , it's NOT THEIR HISTORY , it never was , the actual jews are BLACK skinned , from Africa , that's where all the stories are from and ABOUT , not some white jews who STOLE the history

1:28:00 "the fact we both agree [slavery] is wrong" is because of the intersections between Christian culture AND the Enlightenment... And NO ONE argues the Enlightenment has Christian roots. It was a response to the domination of the past 300 years by many different forms of Christianity. Therefore, it's ironic, to say the least, that Christians make this claim. Totally understandable, however, without all the information and being primed for confirmation bias.

Prof. Holland became an Anglican? I watched a RUclips video where Sir Roger Scruton joked that Anglicans can believe anything and nothing. He also liked knowing that he could still believe what he thought before became an Anglican. That reminds me of Protestantism in general because Protestants change churches and even denominations when they disagree with what they hear in their current one. That makes me wonder what doctrines make up "the Christian faith." God knows many Protestantants put me to shame with their virtue, their devotion to Christ, and and more. But it's hard to believe "the Christian faith" when I reflect on how often they disagree on doctrinal topics. If God revealed everything the Bible teaches, he didn't reveal the denominational disagreements. What good is a divinely revealed anthology if only its authors knew what it means?

It’s actually all about logic. Would you let your son or daughter hangout with a man who talks to himself about killing his son on a mountain? How about a guy who wants to stone children for misunderstanding guidance or not following “orders”? How about a cult that pretends to drink a Jewish deceased man’s blood from the 2nd century? Would you be smart if you say, “ well he’s not dead he’s still alive, forming a cringe smile? How about not going to a doctor for medical reasons but instead, persuaded a person to use magical man-made language of our species? Is this actually logical? Or we’ll be at the mercy of a Greek version of the devil, Minotaur at the end of the world for seven years? They call this Peter’s prophecy? Religion is man-made and you’re a prisoner to someone’s imagination. That’s the horror of it especially when it was written in a time where barbarism was worn like a badge of honor. So please, if you want to change some minds, use logic. Will you buy a house or a car you’ve never seen? Would you cross the street without looking both ways? It’s okay to have a normal life knowing someday just maybe, it will end. Make it count with people who support you and try believing in yourself. Remember, when god said he made Adam in the garden, he only needed him to work the fields or dirt. Never said anything about being created to love. Save your 10 percent for your wife, kids, friends and whoever is family. Those people are in front of you and that’s why you’re making it. And still be charitable. Books don’t bleed.

Such an unfair characterization of Ayaan. ~ 18;45 I don't think Alex treated Ayaan's belief in the resurrection or the virgin birth fairly. Alex accurately says that Ayaan chooses to believe these doctrines, but not because it makes her happy or any other seemingly trivial reason. She says at ~ 16;54, in the video titled, ("'Richard Dawkins vs Ayaan Hirsi Ali: The God Debate" by Unherd) "But if you come round to the idea that there might be something much more powerful than we are, something that caused everything else, then something like Jesus rising out of the dead are these other miracles, Jesus being born out of a virgin, for that higher power is not a big deal." She actually prefaced this by saying to Richard, "And it's a matter going back to: is there something or is there nothing? And I think you start with: there is nothing." Now, if Alex had maybe listened more carefully, been more charitable, or otherwise been aware of and willing to acknowledge what Ayaan had actually said, suddenly, Ayaan's belief would have been at least as reasonable as Richard's. Certainly, if it is true that God A) made the universe from nothing, including B) life from non-life, then neither somehow 1) placing a zygote in the womb of a virgin or 2) raising from the dead a previously alive person should seem overly problematic. Certainly, A and likely B seem as difficult as 1 or 2. And A seems as likely as Richard's assertion that life came about entirely accidentally. And then Alex pretends that one can fairly get to atheism or materialism on the back of reason. ~17;45 Hardly. Do I need to remind Alex why he made a video debunking himself ("COSMIC SKEPTIC DEBUNKED") or why he had no response but a grin at ~ 1;11;35 of "William Lane Craig and CosmicSkeptic Discuss The Kalam Cosmological Argument " Why is it that Alex, usually a fair guy, is treating Ayaan so unfairly? And for goodness sake why the vacilatiy between the "intellectual price of atheism" and it's supposed, "unforgivingly rational critiques" (17;50) Pleeease Alex.

God told Ken things about the house of the woman who Ken would marry as the love of his life. He knew her house before he ever entered it. God told Ken he would marry this woman. Through this believer, Ken came to Christ. Before any of this, he was suicidal, taking MJ to blitz himself so that he could not feel or hear anything. Even through the drugs, God spoke to Ken who was an athiest. So, if you don't believe in God, you have missed reality in a HUGE way.
