    Okay providing the piano is sufficiently distant from the choir, which in small churches architectural constraints doesn't allow for. Such is my scenario and I've had most success with a mid-side array with the 90 degree nullish point directed towards the the piano.

    I guarantee you the (octo 8 pre ) and ( clarett 8 pre) have the same convertor's ! it just has less option's, or used for different scenario's like the octo pre . If you also investigate the specs these two units should have even better quality than this device which is 119 db compared to 124 db ! for the clarett 8 or octo pre.

    In general you produced a fine video. Forgive me if i may do some myth busting regarding what you said. Your first statement suggests that the stock 57 has a transformer to offer a means to match the impedance of the mic to the first preamp and to increase gain which 'helps reduce Gain Before Feedback.' This is not entirely correct. Only the mic capsule design attributes to better GBF. The xfmr has little to do with that. Yes the xfmr is there to match impedances and yes will affect the frequency response of a mic if improperly done. But not necessarily add gain. Regarding the presence of phantom voltage, A properly wired stock or mod 57 or any dynamic mic for that matter will be subject to a voltage surge only while the mic is being connected or disconnected from the phantom source. But not when the mic is already plugged in. When the mic has already been plugged in and phantom voltage applied, no phantom current flows through the mic or xfmr. As far as phantom voltage is concerned the circuit is open. I have used xfmr-less mics live for decades without issue. I appreciate you clarifying the proper use of phantom voltage and if I may add, I'm sure everyone here has experienced hearing an audible click coming from a dynamic mic while plugging it in or upon unplugging. And as you mentioned, this should not be done as it may eventually damage the mic. General rule as you stated, is to leave the phantom off for all channel strips and pres until all microphones are connected. Then apply phantom as needed. This brings me to the most important lesson. Just like your ISA428, most quality pres include a control to electronically 'match' the impedance of the pre's input to the mic. Setting proper impedance is where significant tone and mic characteristics can be achieved. Thank you for your time.

    The reason the gain pots have a condensed level at near maximum is that they are LOG pots and are common for audio rather than linear. Log pots are supposed to replicate the way the human ear works but I can see that maybe linear (evenly spaced) pots may work better.

    from what I could hear over my bad earphone: stock wins on all instruments. Getting rid of frequencies you don't like most probably is easier to maintain using EQ, isn't it? :)

  • @thescotsmantechnologyrevie2138

    If you can really hear the dynamic range of this device, you must be listening too loud. 119dB is well beyond deafening. I'd also suggest if in a blind test everyone can pick out the Focusrite, something is very wrong.

    I start off with a Jecklyn disk with two Schoeps omni mics, and a Grace Design mic pre with A/D conversion . The rest is fine tuning the placement depending on the size of the space and group. It usually results in a nice transparent, airy sound while retaining the reverberation properties of the venue.

    • @lawrencegreenwood4002
      @lawrencegreenwood4002 Год назад

      I run an identical setup on the mic front with a Jecklyn disk, two Schoeps CMC6 w/MK2s. Downstream is a little different, I run a Millennia pres and a UA Apollo x16 on conversion. Sounds great in most spaces. Generally I just vary the cardioid spots if it's a really reverberant space. The right space though and nothing is quite like the AEA R88A. It's a personal favourite. Great to see someone else on the Jecklyn!

    Quick question- I've got a heavy rock track with a big choir section and I'm wondering whether you'd suggest I mix the choir as mono and let the guitars be on hard left and hard right or whether to introduce the different parts of the SATB to the stereo image and blend them into the rock mix? Or perhaps I take ST hard left and AB hard right? Would welcome any suggestions

    • @felixmarques
      @felixmarques Год назад

      Definitely stereo, but neither in the middle nor all in the center. If you've recorded people individually you might want to spread them around a little, mixing them, or distribute them around as in, say, bass at say 20L/20R, A at 40L/40R etc. Try different stuff.

    No criticisms from me. I would like to add a comment about a trick I used when recording jazz at a renowned jazz university. To control bleed, I would use 3-4 condensor pairs, but consider 1/2 of each pair as the far mic for nearby instruments. Ex: Position a drum mic to capture a few DBs of room piano. I was able to please even the finicky faculty. BTW, the Audix mic is loved by conga players. Top notch vid, and the shirt is quite flattering.
