He's a shmuck

It's in the eyes first. In the theater, it's another grab bag. I used a number system for a simple scene with a friend when I made a short film noir. He's sitting, opens his eyes, turns to his right, picks up a pair of chopsticks that he's going to attack someone with, turns back to face forward, then blows out a candle to end the scene. My guy Riki Chen, is very theatrical. I let him loose, then when he was done, I said, you're giving me 80 percent. Try 15. We do it again, I ask for 4. Within one minute we nailed it. No ego squashing. And Riki still added some sweet flourishes with his fingertips. The film is on youtube as Bum Rap Andre Hunt. Not for phones.
