A channel for commentary and podcast-style videos about the Golden State. The topics will always be about California and be a fresh viewpoint from the anti-California sentiment in the media. This isn't a political channel, but rather a Geography-focused channel about the state to discuss things the way they really are.
California Siblings: Cities in CA & Their Eastern U.S. Equivalents
A look at 15 cities in California and what city in the Eastern U.S. is most like it. I examine population, layout, economy, and the overall feel or vibe of that place to determine which place is most similar. Even though these places are far apart from each other, there are many aspects of each that make them alike.

Building a Brand New City in Solano County?
Просмотров 4,3 тыс.9 месяцев назад
Discussion of a recent plan to create a new city from scratch in Solano County in the northeast part of the Bay Area. This project would be big enough to add as much as 400,000 people to the county and be a sustainable, walkable city. California Counties Overview
Просмотров 6 тыс.11 месяцев назад
A quick look at the 58 counties of California. I look at where they are on a map, the population of each one, and the largest cities in each. This is a secondary channel to Geography King, my main channel. ruclips.net/user/geographyking Eureka
What about rental property?
I bet people travel to all corners of the globe but never travel to all the parts of their own state. Also, of the three cities you mentioned for my county, the one I live in now was mentioned. That was fun to hear, but then again so were San Jose and Los Angeles where I've also lived.....LOL
California was originally a republic until Baker v Carr in 1963. This meant that each county had 2 senators in the state Senate. That's why California Counties are so different than the rest of the country.
Crestline is super cheap and SUPER beautiful!
Love California!
Visalia is overrun with illegals, hot, much nicer than fresno tho
Phoenix is better than Sac because AZ has lower taxes, affordable electricity, and no gay stuff in schools. Sac is overrun with drugs crime and homelessness
As a Fort Worth Resident I am curious about San Jose now. I will look it up I love fort worth but I hate that it is in Texas, there isn't much to do in this state.
Crescent City is waayyyyy cheaper to purchase a house than in Eureka !!
Shoutout to Yreka
Chico is awesome and there’s so many different parts to it….. but they had so many days this past summer that were over 110° and couple of days that were 116 - crazy!!! Some of the older houses still have window unit air conditioners, which is almost unimaginable with that kind of heat.
Eureka is gorgeous with cool summers…. but there’s definitely a shortage of medical providers and the drive there isn’t easy due to its location. That being said, though - it’s definitely affordable for a place so close to a major college. And there’s nothing like 64 degree summer days compared to the 95° temperatures inland. If 64 sounds a little bit too cold, you could drive 10 miles into Kneeland and go up about eight or 9°, which is perfect.
Fresno's new motto, "We're not that bad."
I love this channel. One minor correction though; San Diego technically is right on the border. San Ysidro and Otay Mesa are disconnected neighborhoods of the city of San Diego that are collectively called "South San Diego". They are two of the neighborhoods here that are often thought to be distinct cities (the other being La Jolla) but they're actually part of the city of San Diego so San Diego actually is right on the border. I grew up in Alameda County (Berkeley and Oakland) and have lived there as an adult as well along with Contra Costa County (Richmond). I live in San Diego now and have for many years. I've been to a good portion of the state although I have yet to visit the north coast which is on my bucket list.
This was fun to watch. You did a really good job of pointing out some still good places to find less expensive, decent housing in California! I'm a native of California from the San Joaquin Valley originally. For many years my husband's career moved us to several cities in California. I've lived in Porterville, Lindsay, Fresno, Visalia, Merced, Pasadena, San Jose, Rancho Bernardo, Poway, San Diego, and La Jolla, and then many years in several other states including the South, the Northwest, and the East. When we retired 23 years ago we knew we didn't want to go back to the valley because of the air problems or to crowded but beautiful San Diego where we lived for 12 years. We still had one child at home so we wanted the best place we could find to raise her. We wanted friendly people, a university nearby, family values, good air, and lots of green trees within a reasonable driving distance of the mountains and the ocean. We settled in the best city you mentioned. I don't want to name it for fear of encouraging more people to move here! I would like to mention San Luis Obispo and its neighboring cities which are much less expensive than the beach areas of Southern California or the Bay Area. Thanks for this very interesting video!
Sonora, not Sonoma, Tuolumne county.
And just east of there is Mono County which is pronounced with long Os (like Yoko Ono, not like a radio with only one speaker).
Mr Bungle in the background? Hell yeah!
If you live in Fresno, it's not the "beach" it's the "coast" being from the valley, you should know that
thank you sir for this awesome video. thank you
Let's go Giants!
Arm Pit areas of CA really aren’t worth it. Hot. Still over 1.5 hrs to the ocean. Whenever we end up in Redding I just see strip malls, sprawl, and damn HOT, Better to just move on further…
I'm from OC and I always compare it to Long Island when I'm talking to people who don't know about OC.
Wow I live in Alameda County and had no idea we had 1.6M people. We’re catching up to Santa Clara.
In which area an union city
I want to thank you for the work, U did in the video of the house price range. I lived in Lakeport of Lake County which is the county seat from 1988 to 2000. I used to drive all around taking pictures of the barns & grapes vines. I liked it back then but I'm not sure how it is now. I then moved to San Jose, CA in 2000 to 2015 that was alright, but I had to adjust to city living and then I moved to Sacramento, CA in late 2015 till now. Lately (June to Sept. 2024) temperature hot most it seems around 102 degrees. I would like to see living in areas like Ferndale, Ca. but near Hospitals and some services for older people next time in Northern California. Thank U for this
As a native San Franciscan who’s visited Manhattan…spot on
I would say San Diego and Orlando maybe
Didn't the COLTS leave Baltimore in 1984? I think Brooklyn and NY lost a couple of baseball teams back in the 1950s too. The Rams can't make up their mind what city they want to stay in. The Arizona Cardinals didn't originate there either. Just because now BILLION DOLLAR CORPORATIONS (Green Bay exception) only chase the mighty dollar and the people's tax money, one should take stabs at cities that lose a sports team.
Thank you for mentioning Eureka! So much beauty if you can find the Lost Coast 🌲🌲
Those aren't necessarily the largest cities you have listed, those are the County Seats, which is where the county government is based (i.e. the "capital" of the county). For some of the highest-populated counties, like Los Angeles or San Diego, the largest city and county seat are one in the same, but it's not always the case. For Inyo County, Independence is the county seat, but with only 600+ people it's not the largest city. That would be Bishop, which has just under 4,000 people. Same goes for Mono County - Bridgeport (pop: 400) is the county seat, but Mammoth Lakes (pop: 7,000) is its largest city.
Good list and your reasoning for these picks is sound. As a lifelong Californian, I'd agree with you on just about all of this. Don't know that I'm ready to go to Fresno, but, I do like Visalia and have for about 40 years.
PLEASE do a video on the 'Swapmeets' of California 😂
Add up: Fresno, CA and Buffalo, NY
I dont get the Boston/San Diego comparison. Like someone else said Tampa & San Diego are more similar. Heavy military, theme parks, beaches, laid back vibe, Gaslamp vs. Ybor, low-key best kept secret of their respective regions.
whoa did not know Geo King had a second channel, nice
Fun video. I have lived in both San Diego and Boston. Both are wonderful cities, and a lot more doable (imho) than their larger counterparts (I also lived in some of the LA beach communities, and one unfortunate semester in North Hollywood). I think the vibe of San Diego is much different than Boston. I don't think board shorts and flip-flops would get much attention in PB or MB (San Diego) but would turn some heads in the Boston Common! Boston also has so much history. San Diego has some older and more historically interesting districts, but again, the vibe is Latin compared to New England. Love both cities! Boston isn't far from some cool beaches.
My mother and sister both live in Sacramento. Ugh...I wouldn't wish that place on anyone.
Didn't know you had this channel also 😁
Palm Springs has a lot in common with Provincetown, since both are gay Meccas. Incidentally, greater Palm Springs has more than 130 golf courses, whereas Naples only has 90. Palm Springs also calls itself the Golf Capital of the World and deserves the title more than Naples does.
This is a very cool vid for travelers and filmmakers doing locations scouting. I would only change one thing...label the photos so unfamiliar people can tell which is which? Or do side by sides? Just a thought. Good stuff.
What about paso robles?
San Jose could fight Dallas and Ft Worth at the same time
Fascinating parallels, Kyle - thanks for your content!
The City’s vibe (before tech ruined it) is nowhere near Manhattan. NY has an electric vibe while SF is more chill, artistic, live music and standup, hippies. NY is meth while SF is cannabis 😅
San Diego being Boston is a disgrace to San Diego! Boston is the single worst and most treacherous city in the country! Also Bostonians are jerks! They aren’t laid back in the slightest! San Diego on the other hand is my third favorite city in the whole country only after Los Angeles at first and Phoenix in second!! Boston and Diego are NOTHING ALIKE!
No Long Beach???? It’s only one of the larger California cities
Another reason I would give Newark, NJ to Oakland is that Newark is across a river from NYC just like Oakland is across a bay from SF.
Boston and sf are very similar, the architecture, the love for clam chowder, success of the sports teams and population size.
I remember when i visited Charleston south Carolina for the first time and it resembled san Diego California to me
He has to be from Cali and live in NC
