Kodiak Canvas Tent Window Awning Assembly
It's a tent. Do you really need it to be 75°?
No. I was testing it to see how warm it would get in cold weather. I tested it again this week on my camping trip to SW Colorado and we had temperatures down to 14 degrees to 25 degrees at night all week and my tent stayed between 55 and 65 degrees. I'm testing more heat sources including wood stoves, diesel heaters and kerosene heaters. Let me know what you like to use when camping. Rick
@mikenrickoutdoors I prefer to sleep in my truck with a camper shell with a bed platform. I heat it up with a buddy heater before crawling in for the night, then light it up in the morning. Sometimes leaving just the pilot on as they throw off a fair bit of heat. I tend to sleep hot anyway. A mattress with a high R value and good bag, also using a liner bag, sometimes in conjunction with a wool Army blanket. No mummy bag for me, they drive me nuts and I'll have weird dreams.😵💫 Fresh, dry, loose fitting socks before bed. I have tent camped in mid 20's temps and found myself using the heater on and off through the night, but it wasn't a 4 season tent.
Thank you. I'm debating myself about continuing on with tents or moving to a camper shell or a truck camper. Thank you for sharing how you sleep. I'm always looking to keep things simple, but effective. Rick
Name of the background song? Very catchy
I found it on Epidemic Sound. It's called Baptized and Buried by Will Harrison. Rick
@mikenrickoutdoors 10 4 thank ya sir!
Good info Thx
Glad to help. Let me know if you have any questions. Rick
Who would have guessed that if you double the heat output it would be warmer in the tent? Stranger than fiction...
I have been testing the Big Buddy again down to 14 degree weather here in SW Colorado and it's doing well, but may be reaching it's limit. I'm also testing out diesel and kerosene heaters now to see if I can find a better heat source. Rick
I have the big one but am considering getting the small one as well for another part of the house. Can't hurt if you can afford it. Thanks for the video
Good point. I have the Big Buddy, Portable Buddy, and the Little Buddy, plus I bought a backup Big Buddy. Now I also need a backup hose. It's always good to have backup heat sources when camping or if you lose power at home. Thanks for the thumbs up. Rick
I've had 2 big buddy heaters start smoking like burning plastic when on high after running well on low to medium. Never any problems with the smaller buddy.
Thank you for sharing this. I have the Big Buddy, Portable Buddy, and Little Buddy and have never had any issues, but I do watch them closely as anything could happen. Rick
Also, big buddy has a fan. Little buddy doesn't. I'd like to see the difference with on on vs off.
I'll be testing these more next week and I'll have more videos up in November. Will you give me a little more information as to exactly what you would like tested? I'll have my Big Buddy, Portable Buddy, and Little Buddy with me, plus a wood stove, and a diesel heater. Rick
Good comparison. Thank you.
Glad to help and thanks for the thumbs up. Rick
My tents jack flap rolls down out of the way on my outfitter tent ,never seen anyone use a floor in a hot tent ever though, don't yours come out ?? And i put 2 sections in the stove first and then slide the next sections through the roof if I'm using separate pipe sections, generally i use a one piece titanium roll pipe its way quicker
No, the floor is permanent, that's why I use two heat shields. good point on the pipe sections through the roof. Rick
Biggest problem I have with this stove is overfiring it , occasionally it will jump to 1000° degrees and then I got to knock it back a bit with the dampers ,still can't find the sweet spot
I had the same problem and I believe it's due to too much air coming through the edges around the door so I bought some heat resistant tape to put around the door to see if that helps me control the air flow, and in turn helps me keep the temperature down. I wanted to test it on this weeks camping trip to SW Colorado but I had too much gear with me. I will be testing it out in the coming weeks in November to see if this is a solution. If not, I'll switch to another wood stove. Rick
Only thing i don't like is the cheap spark arrestor, but i would have used a few sections of pipe to do the burn in
Good points. Thanks for the comment. Rick
Thank you so much for this. And the tips about how to make them more comfortable😊
Always glad to help. Rick
Cutbow- hybrid. Body colors of a rainbow with a red gill covering of a cutthroat
Thank you for letting us know. It's hard to keep all the different types of trout straight in our heads some times. Rick
I like to place my tent 12ft high on wood platform. Also build OH. On platform with plastic drain pipe down into ground. Of course this is permanent on my property. Crank cable system to put up steps. View and better security 😂
Nice! I love to hear about what others are doing, even permanent setups. Thanks. Rick
Some great ideas guys, I have the Winnerwell pipe oven stove for my hunting / camping set up and was looking for a few more food ideas, thanks!
Glad to help. Let us know what you end up cooking. Rick
Manual says not to use it in high indoors and also not to use a 20lb propane tank inside lol. Guess this guy does what he wants. Kudos.
The manual says a lot of things, plus Mr Heater will never tell you to bleed the 20 lb line to make it easier to light, but I'm sure that's for liability concerns, but these are things I have found over time that make using the Big Buddy Heaters work better for me. Another thing is when I look online and at Cabela's, they are selling the hoses right next to the Big Buddy heaters, so I guess they need to figure out they're also wrong. I put my propane tank outside the tent so that adds a little safety. I'm heading back out at the end of October and will probably be testing a diesel heater. Several people have been giving me advice to try that so I believe I will. Thanks for leaving the comment. Rick
You need to fix 2 length inside, just put the rest outside through the hole.
Good point. I'll be putting it up again at the end of October so I'll make that change and try it out. I'll upload a new video with the changes. I'll mention your RUclips name in the video if you would like me to. Rick
Definitely a 1 person tent. 😂
Absolutely! Rick
You dont need a filter if you buy the right lil buddy hose. It doesnt have all the oils in it. I have ran mine in the garage for 4 winters now. Js
You're absolutely right. I own the correct hose now, as does Mike, and it works much better. Thank you for the comment. Rick
Just tried out my stove for the first time and smoke leaks put of the first section of pipe between the stove and pipe crimp. Shouldnt it be set up so that the crimp end points up, and the female end of pipe faces down?
Yes. I haven't had smoke leaking from mine. Is the damper on the pipe open? You may need to contact Camp Chef directly if you keep having an issue. Let me know if I can help more. Rick
You didn't mention what heat setting you had it on. No an accurate assessment because the first heater got you started.
Both of them were on high. Let me know if you have any other questions. Rick
Do you have a video on how you connected the chains to the chimney? Also links for the equipment you used for the chains and also everything you used to attach them? Thank you for your videos! They have helped a lot so far.
There are several videos and I'll list them below. The first time I tried securing the stove I used paracord but that almost burned off. That's why I switched to metal. Camp Chef Stove Out of the Box: ruclips.net/video/HbI_Q1k8VOQ/видео.html How to Secure a Tent Stove Pipe: ruclips.net/video/pmR4Cg--Bj0/видео.html Rain Cap Spark Arrestor: ruclips.net/video/zMI7Wy6Cf74/видео.html Here's an example of the quick link clips I used to attach the chain to the spark arrestor: amzn.to/3N5gu7Z Here's what I used to attach the chain to the tent poles: amzn.to/4gLQAnu That's all I used. Let me know if you have other questions. Rick
Dang, you have blankets galore! That's alot to bring for a camping trip but being cold has been deal breakers for me too. Thank you for the video!
Two things concerning your thoughts. 1. In the warmer months, I use less blankets or none at all. 2. In the winter, I use canvas tents now with a camp stove or a Big Buddy heater, so these better tents plus the heater helps me adjust what I use for bedding. I'm heading out this weekend for another camping trip but I'll be using my Kodiak Canvas Flex-Bow tent and I may not use many blankets, but I will have my heater ready to go if needed. I'm going fishing with Mike in late October to early November and at that trip here in Colorado, I'll be ready with better bedding material and heat sources. Thanks for leaving the comment and let me know if you have any questions. I'm always curious to hear how other people sleep when camping. Rick
@@mikenrickoutdoors based on your video, I did my own modification, just used sleeping bags and my latest very comfortable setup! I was going to show a photo but I guess I can't put pictures on my replies.
I would like to see the photo. Will you send it to: MikenRickOutdoors@gmail.com I am interested in finding improvements and maybe I'll make a video of it and give you credit. Rick
Thx for video. Not much info out there for new tent stove guys. Instructions came with my Colorado Spruce is slim!!!
I'm glad we could help. Mike also has some good instruction videos on the Winnerwell Nomad stove if you're interested in seeing that. Winnerwell Nomad: ruclips.net/video/yTXMSnogNRM/видео.html Apple Pie in a Winnerwell Stove: ruclips.net/video/h0NMFgbOFF0/видео.html Let me know if you have any questions. We'll be putting more videos out soon. Rick
Nice; hunting on my spare time for 2 days some times 3 , this is not for me, I'm looking for quick setup and breakdown, i had my nylon tent for 13 years with a buddy heater and bring my harvest home to package. But tent is old and looking for other options. Thanks for sharing.
Always glad to help. I'm heading out tomorrow with my other Kodiak Canvas tent. It's a FlexBow tent. They're both great. You can learn more about the FlexBow tent in one of our other reviews below. ruclips.net/video/MCtSaGe5sAE/видео.html Let me know if you have any questions. Rick
A couple years ago, I fished the south fork of the San Miguel. Never tried the main river but did camp along the San Miguel at Caddis Flats Campground near Placerville. Looks like a great place. Need to put it on my bucket list. Out of curiosity, what time of year were you there? Thanks enjoyed.
Glad you liked the video. We were there in August that year. Let me know if you have any other questions. Rick
What is the brand name on your raincoat, and what size is it (5 inch, 6inch)? I believe in one of your post you said you had 6 inch pipe. That being said, should you buy a 5 inch brush for 5 inch pipe ( not 6 inch brush for 5 inch pipe) ? Thanks Bruce
Bad spelling, rain cap , not rain coat.
The stove pipe is 6". I went out and re-measured it. You may want to ask Camp Chef for their official opinion, but my take on it would be to buy a 6" brush for the 6" stove pipe. Let me know if you have any other questions. Rick
What kind of psycho actually uses the top sheet?
Well, that psycho would be me. It makes sleeping out in the Rocky Mountains more comfortable. Everyone is welcome to find ways to sleep the best they can. Let me what you have found best for sleeping when camping. Rick
wounder if that chrome stove tape would work instead of screws?
Good idea. I hadn't thought about that. Thanks. Rick
We are camping near 11 mile in a week. Plan on fishing for trout & pike. Thanks for tips
Glad to help. Good luck and let me know how you do. Rick
What temp rating is your sleeping bag? Awesome video 👍
It's an older sleeping bag that I call a hunting bag and I believe it's rated to around 0 degrees F. I have a second one I put down at the bottom over my feet to keep the blankets from coming up and letting my feet hang out at the bottom and that's probably a 30 degree F bag. I also use a Portable Buddy or a Big Buddy heater and I'm plenty warm when it's 20 degrees F out at night here in Colorado. I haven't been out in zero degrees here yet but maybe I'll test out the colder temps this Fall and Winter. I hope that helps. Rick
Just started cot camping and looking for the best setup
This is the best way I have found to sleep when camping. Now Mike and his daughter also use this same method and they love it. It's taking me many years to figure this out but I love it. Having a small heater with this setup keeps me warm no matter what time of the year I have camped here in Colorado. Let me know if you have any other questions. Rick
Thank you! I hate how tight sleeping bags are to sleep in. I'm constantly sticking my feet out the side of my bed to temperature control.
I tried this a few times and then talked Mike into getting the same setup. Now Mike and his daughter have the same setup and we all love it. It's the best way to sleep in a tent, anytime of the year. Rick
for a bit under 700 this is great for me and my doggo. we live outdoors full time and need this. it looks so much bigger than 10x10.. lol.
Yah, it's great for one person and their dog. Mike has the 12'x12' and it's big enough for two people and two dogs...okay, maybe one dog. I love these tents. They are the best I have ever used. Rick
@@mikenrickoutdoors I have a diesel heater. is it possible to set it outside and route the heater hose into the tent through the door?
I've been hearing a lot about diesel heaters and this is something I am looking into testing in upcoming camping trips. What diesel heater do you use? Rick
@@mikenrickoutdoors mine is an inexpensive VEVOR "portable" but I'm setting it aside and I'm getting the HCALORY 12V Portable one that comes in a case. it's only 80.00 and should be well worth it for the price point.
Perfect! Thank you for the info. Rick

I can’t believe nobody has commented yet. This was a great and very informative video and appreciate you. Thank you Sir.
Thanks for watching and I'm glad it was helpful. Rick
The gasping for air isnt good braddah! Elevation change?
Yep, and it's also called being out of shape. Can't help the elevation but I am working hard on getting in great shape. Thanks for the comment and I'm working hard to be better at health and on camera. Rick
Every time i go camping, im freezing. We go in October. Will this keep you warm?
It depends on you and how many blankets or how good your sleeping bag is. I camp in October and November here in Colorado all the time and I like to have my Big Buddy heater with me and I'm always perfectly warm. Mike will use a heater to get his tent warm and then shuts off the heater at night because he loves sleeping when it's really cold. I keep my heater on all night, plus I like the warm light the heater puts out. As far as the cot, pad and how I set this up...it's what I use to this day, but I add a Big Buddy heater to the mix. Let me know if you have any other questions. Rick
As soon as i heard REI i said no.Overpriced junk is what they sell.
I have to disagree with you. REI carries a lot of great gear and their Kingdom Cot is one of them. I recently tested out the Cabela's Lounge cot and I like it a little better as it has a set of legs at the end of the cot so you won't sit on it and cause it to fly up in the air, plus it comes with a great carrying case. Check out my video review below if you think it would be better. Cabela's Lounge Cot: ruclips.net/video/dKEUg5rRLlg/видео.html Let me know if you have any questions. Rick
We are big group like 10 people outdoor. I am wondering if it helps for outdoor gatherings? Please make videos about it? Ty.
The Big Buddy would be better but it's best to have it in an enclosed location. I also have a fan on top of it. Check out this video below. ruclips.net/video/t9uAun34BnQ/видео.html Let me know if you have more questions. Rick
Register your boat? And you guys think that we're weird? (Brit)
LOL. I don't think you're weird. There are plenty of laws here in the U.S. that should keep us from giving other people grief. Rick
nice tent and review. Perfect for one big dude!
LOL. You're exactly right. It's a one-man tent, and no one can convince me otherwise. Rick
Have u tested this rain cap? If so does it push the hot ambers down towards the tent?
I've tested it 3 or 4 times here in Colorado with great weather and in strong thunderstorms and I have never seen any issues with the embers. It has been brought to my attention several times so I keep a close eye on it and it's not been a problem so far. Rick
@@mikenrickoutdoors thanks for the update!
Tents dont come with uv protection, idk why but its worth doing to new tents and wax the guide ropes
Great point. Thanks for the advice. Rick
I wondered how to install the dampener... it looks like you didn't record that part.
I go over it in this video below. ruclips.net/video/HbI_Q1k8VOQ/видео.html Let me know if you have any other questions. Rick
Ive seen another video with the same setup but the problem with the top of that stack setup it was pushing the ambers down on top of the tent have you experienced this?
I have been warned about this so I've been watching it closely and I have never had any issues nor been concerned about what I've seen while using it. Rick
I😂😂lk
