I don't know much about this recording, but it could be led by either PM Willie Ross, Andrew McIntosh or J.B. Robertson. I'd guess it was recorded somewhere around the 1920's to 1930's. Some very spirited playing, in any case!

I only wish I could get my fingers to do more and learn the first tune as a known tune. Thank you for sharing with any of the pipers out there!!!

In the mid 80's I competed with a US lower grade band one season. Jeannie Carruthers was our march. Separately I was playing all the time and winning in US solos at our top amateur level. Blair Drummond is one of my all time favorites and I was able enough to play it in public for Highland dancers. Also Pretty Marion. But nowhere near the level of these players. Thanks for sharing this video.

Hi Sandy, I have a possible suggestion for you. The recordings still have the clicking and crackling which annoys me, and I'm not a fan of the post-digitized noise-remover you put on the tracks. Here's a good way to reduce the actual noise without putting it in a sort of bubbly quality. What do you use, Windows or Mac? I don't know about Mac computers but there's a program called "WaveCorrector" which will get rid of the clicks and crackles. There used to be another one called "Clickrepair" which I have but you can't get anymore, but I remaster old records using that software all the time. Additionally, these records warp, and I'm also known for correcting the warps on these old recordings. If you're interested in using WaveCorrector I'd love to hear how it turns out. But if you'd like some help with remastering these albums, just let me know and I can help you out with correcting the warping, clicking and crackling which still bothers me as a blind piper with perfect pitch. On my channel info you can find all the ways I'm reachable.

What a fascinating instrument, and what a singular music this is that it can play. I wish I could claim descent from the culture that produced such a treasure, and those that can should count themselves lucky, but I am an American and my links to Scotland (or anywhere else outside the States) are tenuous at best. It is an ultimately unattainable dream of mine to play pieces like these with such skill as this piper, but South Texas is not a stronghold for ceol mor and I am too old at twenty-four besides so I bide my time with other things.

Twenty-four is not too old. I started playing the great highland bagpipe at 58 and I am now learning my first piobaireachd at 59.

Prefer this older style playing, chanters much more mellow than the “piccolo “ chanters these days…..snares had a more resonant deeper sound than the rattles we hear now……just my opinion of course.

I joined muirheads in '69 just before they lost to shotts in Aberdeen and my short spell as an up and coming junior to be part of in my opinion the best group of pipers and drummers in the world was cut short by a head injury and makes you wonder what if.Thanks for the memories, RG Hardie, John Findlay, All the Elmslies, Andersons ,Rab Turner, Robert Richardson and yes Robert Wallace and many more who's names will live forever. What I time in my life, thanks again.

I think I'm the first to post excerpts from this album. I play this instrument and I could easily play Modder River in my prime, and every tune on this albusm except for Miss Proud. I can play it medium speed, but never in my best years full speed. I hope there is a future for Highland pipes where this recording is appreciated.

OH MY LORD!! I could not believe this showed up when I went on RUclips tonight!! I was a student of Mr. MacNeil's in 1973, when he brought his School of Piping, to Kansas City MO. At the time, I played with the Kansas City St. Andrews Pipes & Drums. Ian Paton was the PM at the time and Bob Watson was my beloved teacher, who took me under his wing. (I've tried to locate Bob over the years, but have been unsuccessful. If anyone reading this has any information on Bob, I would greatly appreciate it being forwarded to me) If I recall correctly, it was a week long seminar. I was just 13 and quite honestly, had no idea what "presence" I was in at the time!! What a magnificent man and dedicated teacher!! As I got older, I've considered myself so fortunate to have been under his tutelage for that short period of time and I am forever grateful to him and my experience!! May god bless Mr. MacNeil and his tremendous contribution to The Piping World!! "piper john"

The Glenfinnan Highland Gathering composer Pipe Major Ronnie Lawrie came into the compartment of the train when I was on my way to Oban one day and we had a great chat. There was two girls from South Africa came in and Big Ronnie went and got us all coffee. That was the last time I was in a train that had the old style compartments in it with the corridor down the side. A gentle giant of a man.
