“What a Glorious Way to Go”: Col Gatch and the Flight of the Light Heart
In a pioneering gambit, a U.S. Army Reserve Colonel endeavors to become the first man to cross the Atlantic by balloon, utilizing advanced technology to traverse the ocean at nearly forty thousand feet. Despite initial success, this high-risk venture soon unravels and ends in mysterious failure.
Thanks to Bill Armstrong, Captain USNR (ret) for the invaluable support, documents, and imagery that made it possible to tell this story. His book, Just Wind: Tales of Two Pilots Under Pressure, tells the story of Col Gatch in greater detail. www.amazon.com/Just-Wind-Tales-Pilots-Pressure/dp/0595612539.

However, despite the se...

    I found out about Walter Soplata's aircraft junkyard from Jim Bede's son at The Akron/Fulton airport in '76 or '77. He was sitting in the cockpit of the prop-driven version of this, and we were both probably about 20.

    Definitely under funded project and road blocked at every turn. The science and technology was available even then for this to have been a ground breaking market changing aircraft. Unfortunately he had some major contenders in the industry. If not for the opposition I believe it would have been a far more refined aircraft. Jim was desperate to get his foot in the door but could not find investors who didn't know the game was over before he had even stepped into the field.

    wow, I cannot imagine putting an aircraft down in 20 foot seas at night in a storm, hats off to the crew for their skills and courage under duress, it could have been a totally different outcome................I flew either Flying Tiger Lines or Seaboard World to Nam in 1970, the plane was a pile, the auto-pilot did not work, we could not dump fuel so we had to circle and burn all that fuel off. Plus I am sure we were overloaded as when we left March AFB it took forever to get off the ground, I swear my butt scraped on the barb-wire fence at the end of the runway when we finally got airborne.

  • @EmpressOfExile206

    I only saw one problem in your speculation You stated his reasoning for not cutting fuel to slow the aircraft was because "it's something any pilot would be loathe to do for risk of damaging the valuable asset"... However, that holds no water once factoring that a jettison would be the *far more likely* option to damage the frame! Which makes it more likely that his lack in knowledge/familiarity with the aircraft led to poor decisions 💯

    • @AviationHorrors
      @AviationHorrors 8 месяцев назад

      Lack of proficiency / familiarity was likely a key factor, as you suggest; shutting down the engine entirely probably wouldn’t be a natural reaction, and because it would likely cause damage to the engine and force him to make a dead-stick landing.

    I suspect it was mechanical failure or something of that sort. But if a bomb was planted on board, could it have been fused to go off when it receives a radio signal? The range of the radio signal is known. Plane flies over boat, plane blows up. I’m not saying I think that is what happened, just interesting to think about

    Just finished cleaning one up to be used as a prop. After looking thru it, seeing how the pulleys and cables work.... Seeing as your feet are 12 inches from the nose cone.... Ya, it's a coffin. even if this had a PERFECT engine..... I'd rather eat a booger than fly it. Looks great as a prop tho.

    Something not mentioned, but which I think is very important, is the maintenance history of this aircraft, with particular attention given to the radial engines. Had they been properly examined and serviced, and how many hours were on each engine?

    And if anyone is so NAIVE as to think for even a second that the US Government or even the British Government for that matter would be open, honest and truthful about what REALLY happened to that plane is better off going to a Gypsy Taro card reader! They'd get about the same results although I'd trust the Gypsy more.

    Intrigued by the place of origjn of this flight, I can't help but think about the Roswell "Incident" in 1947. Has anyone explored this as a possible link to the C-124 disappearance? Could some object from the 1947 incident been aboard the C-124 ? What is thd depth of the ocean in and around the proportion crash site ? Has anyone done Magnetometer and Side-Scan SONAR sweeps of the area to search for crash derbis? Did RF spectrum analysis data from this event record any anomolies? To paraphrase a pointy-eared character from Star Trek, once all logical possibilities gave been exhausted, there only remains the illogical!

And - as much as I knew in the 1987 timeframe of the Jim Bede, BD-5 History, and tried to warn them, "They Knew Better" - So they got to experience Bankruptcy, themselves!

      The BD5's main flaw was that it was built by a bean counter who read too many FLYING magazines and had just enough aeronautical engineering education to be dangerous. Bede didn't have the capital to do Sequential Development, which is common sense, IMO. Get investors. Build the prototype, fly the hell out of it with test pilots, make corrections, develop the kits and have volunteers ACTUALLY BUILD THEM to confirm the build time. Finally, get the FAA's blessing. Only THEN should it go out as a kit.
