    Great to see them getting the props they deserve even if long overdue. One of my all-time favs. These guys were a huge ingredient of the funk era, in the days where you just put the album on, run side one then flip it and run side two. Legends!!!

    I was very lucky in 1982 Joining Slave as lead Singer Taking the great Steve Arrington's place on Bad Enuff and then lead Vocals on every song on New Plateau. I love these guys with all of my heart! Thank you for the feature on these incredibly Talented Musical pioneers!

    I love them with everything until they came to Africa went back to America to say they will never visit Africa again, like its a piece of SHIT. On Right On mag they got hit back by a lot of Afro Americans, but still they are still my idols, I love sampling their stuffs. "Strawberry letter 22 and Aint you funking now" my best piece. RIP LOIUS "THUNDER BASS" JOHNSON

    What was sad and not mentioned, fate would have it, they were not really on good talking terms before Louis died, George was upset because so many people were demanding Louis's bass services in their music and it affected them as being a group doing their music, he would miss important studio engagements and when he would come he would be so fatigued he would sometimes fall asleep and not know his parts, causing a tremendous strain among the brothers.

    That's Louis Johnson laying down the bass line on Jackson's "Billie Jean." These two LA brothers, along with another set of LA brothers (Porcaro) and their friends who made up Toto, would become part of a musical sessions force for recordings out of LA in the 70s and 80s.

    UNDERDOGS....,LOL, according to WHOM? Both of these guys were accomplished musicians on the LA music scene in the 70's! They attended Crenshaw HS in LA, won a talent show, which lead to them being featured on an instrumental by Billy Preston "OUTTA Space", that's my first exposure to them. Then in 1975, they appeared on a Quincy Jones LP, "Mellow Madness", where they were featured! Might I mention percussionist Richard Heath, who attended Morningside HS, as I did, became a member of their band. In '76 came "Lookin' out for #1". George Johnson was a featured guitarist on a George Duke LP, "I love the blues, she heard my cry". Louis Johnson STAYED busy throughout the 70's, and WELL into the 80's on countless jazz albums by Grover Washington jr, Herbie Hancock and many others. The famous song "Strawberry Letter 23", penciled by George Johnson, was a wedding song for Louis Johnson! George Johnson ♉️, and Louis Johnson ♈️, we're NOBODY'S underdog by ANY means!✊🏿

    I wanna say these guys were so underrated but that wouldn't be true because they gain fame and won awards. Still I felt they deserve more. Tokyo from the 1984 album was a great jazz tune but didn't get a lot of airplay.

      Exactly! "P.O. Box 2000" was a classic Brothers Johnson instrumental jam! ...Wonderful shout out to them! I always thought that they could make an album or an EP that consisted solely of their instrumentals: "P.O. Box 2000"; "Q"; "Streetwave"; "Tokyo"; "Brother Man"; "Thunder Thumbs and Lightnin' Licks"; "Tomorrow"; and "Smilin' on Ya" (which won the talented duo a Grammy Award). Thanks much for your comment, and thank the "Musical Underdogs" uploader for this great presentation of an unheralded group that truly lit up the music scene during the '70s and '80s! To quote their song title from the "Light up the Night" album, they are indeed a "Treasure." There will be no other like The Bros. Johnson! Thank you, and blessings to all.

  • @91dodgespiritrt
    @91dodgespiritrt 23 дня назад

    You didn't focus on the "main" member of Brick, bassist Ray Ransom, who wrote "Music Matic", co-wrote and sang LEAD, notably on "Dazz", and on most of their hits. I believe Ransom left the band years ago (to start a catering business in Atlanta????) and was replaced by another bass player. When Brick appeared on "Soul Train", it was - RAY RANSOM - who introduced the members of the band to Don Cornelius and the world. Also, you didn't mention how often they were sampled by rapper groups - particularly by "Kid N Play", whose first hit was based on a sample from "Ain't gonna Hurt Nobody". "Kid N Play" even took Ransom and Hargis' dance step - kicking their shoes against each other - in their dances. the only original member in the current version of "Brick" is Jimmy Brown, so it is several pieces of clay short of the original hit band, "Brick".
