Sailing Norla
Австралия
Добавлен 5 мар 2024
We are Samuel & Emma from Tasmania (Australia) sailing our classic, 38 foot timber yacht, Norla, built in 1960 by Halvorsen shipwrights in Sydney. We are documenting our sailing and travel adventures aboard this beautiful vessel: the challenges, joys and insights gained from travelling slowly, sustainably and by sea. Samuel, a singer-songwriter, took leave from performing at home and Emma time off from teaching to embark on this adventure. Through our sails, tales and songs, we wish to share the excitement and common humanity we are finding daily on our travels. We hope you find enjoyment following our journey.
Sailing Norla Ep 37 Peaks & Pioneers
This episode we learn a bit of Fijian history from our trail tour guide Knox,

We also witness the pride in education and dedication of the kids and teachers alike, experience another amazing Island in Naigani and venture around the Viti Levu coast with our friends on Sansabaar.

Great episode. I think you hit the entire spectrum of emotions with this one.
Thank you 🙏. Definitely big highs and a big low in this episode. So pleased you enjoyed it and thank you for watching 😊⛵️
Ha, ha. Q. When is a cruising sailor a keen racer? A. When there's another yacht around! 😃 Love to see Sam bend on Norla's stays'l and power off on a three-sail reach! Lovely reef dive sequence too. Another great vid, guys.
Ha that is so true 😊. Norla usually holds her own - not bad for an old girl 😊⛵️. Thank you for watching and so pleased you enjoyed this episode. Aren’t the fish just beautiful. Could watch them for hours 😊
Thank you for this lovely journey to such a magical part of the world! Special hugs to my dear friends Susan and Todd!
Thank you so much for watching this episode. One of the best things about the cruising lifestyle is meeting wonderful people like Todd and Susan. We hope to see them again in Tasmania next year 😊⛵️
Sparkling Joy 🩵 🩵 🩵 Thanks
without the champagne ...;) You're most welcome!
My goodness, what a gorgeous little island! 😮❤
Thank you. Yes, it was such a beautiful place to spend time 😊⛵️
👍👍👍
Gorgeous, vibrant Nemena reef life in this episode, guys. And such thriving, joyous kids already with big plans for their own futures. Well done guys.
Thank you 🙏. We love your thoughtful comments so much and we especially loved the places in this episode. Such beautiful kids with such sunny, optimistic outlooks. We have so much to learn from them 😊⛵️
You might want to add an inline fuse to the lines into your charger when you get a chance.
Thank you for your advice 🙏. We actually do have one but strangely it didn’t blow it. Not sure why?? Maybe we got on to it in time. Always something on boats to keep you on your toes. So appreciate you looking out for us 😊⛵️
What an awesome community. Those kids are awesome. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you so much for your ongoing support and interest 🙏. We just loved the people and it was a privilege to spend time with such a beautiful community 😊⛵️
Grate looking couple, enjoy.
Thank you. Great Barrier Island is a magical place. Still one of our favourites: beautiful scenery and lovely people 😊⛵️
I so love that little boat of yours it just is such a nice gem, what year and make is she! Thanks again for the great video, awesome music and incredible esprit d vie to life, I love you both just so much. God Bless G
Thank you so much for watching and for your lovely comment. Norla is a 1960 Halvorsen, built in Sydney. She’s a wonderful boat and has been in Sam’s family for many years; she’s an heirloom 😊Despite her age, she’s very seaworthy and still performs well. She really is a gem 😘⛵️. Really appreciate your interest and support. All our best Sam & Emma ☀️⛵️
Beautiful
Thank you. We had so much fun here 😊⛵️
Awesome guys
Thank you. This was a super fun episode to make. So pleased you enjoyed it 😊⛵️
So, the bits are all back in the right places, but the problems persist? That's annoying for you guys. Impressed with Norla's speed on a beam reach. She has legs, that's for sure. Happy belated birthday wishes, Emma. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for the birthday wishes, Dave. The bits are back in place but we had to get the water pump replaced in Vuda and the alternator is playing up again. We’re really hoping it lasts until we’re home in Tassie. Yep Norla certainly loves a beam reach - not bad for an old girl 😊. Thanks again for watching and for your very thoughtful comments, as always. Really appreciate it and love reading your feedback 🙏⛵️😊
Battling on guys. Well done.
Nice handy boat works you guys. Sorry for the motorous issues! I hope all fixed now? That reef- gorgeous. Not a terrible place to have to wait out the wrong way winds. 🐠 looks tricky to count some of those
Thanks Mim, yer a lovely spot truly! We got the water pump done again once it failed.....but alternator just started playing up a couple of weeks ago...so we can't run the DCDC, but it will charge the starter battery okay. We will wait till we're home to fix it. Yes, those guys are expert fish counters, they have some pretty developed methods and are super dedicated to the cause.
Thank you! Bummer that motor.
Thank you so much watching. Unfortunately, we’re still having issues with the alternator. Always something to fix on a boat 😊⛵️
People are waking up to how much we need one another........an awakening much needed in this world will arrive! None of us can go it alone! Do you mind me asking what is your demonic tattoo about! Dark and shadowy!
Thanks for your comment, so true! Community is imperative, we feel blessed to be part of the sailing community. That's a fair question....ah grim....well let's just say it was a 16 year old realising that death will come to us all and as a reminder to live life to the fullest and not to fear the reaper, but to enjoy the gift of life, so I put him on my arm. The other arm represents birth and the sun in the spiral of life.
@@SailingNorla May god bless you, your music speaks to your soul, yes we must be outside doubt of our Lord, be like children in his light and outside ourselves with the ego, bias and sin we all battle! I work on an algorithmic math model that proves God is real. 14 years of work, bless that beautiful wife with a kiss. G
Great videos and music thank you.
So pleased you enjoyed our episode. Thank you so much 🙏 for watching 😊⛵️
What gorgeous cruising grounds in the BOI. 'Remember you came here with nothin' - more wonderful original tunes and harp, guys. Sorry about the mechanics. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you so much for your comment(s) and support. That's an older song from an old album (2004), chuffed you enjoying the tunes! Yes, it really is stunning, a shame we had to leave that area with engine difficulties but a good reason to return one day, if we could be so lucky....
Was the music lifted from Bridgerton?? Ha ha
Hey Claire sounds like it but no, they’re local musicians 😘
Another fabulous episode! Such magnificent memories of a stunning place.
Thank you 🙏. We all had so much fun there. Pleased you enjoyed the episode x
Wow what a lovely episode. Sorry about the alternator. Hope it all got fixed. Are you in Australia now?
Thank you, John. Yes we’ve just arrived back in Oz and are waiting to import our boat. It’s such a nuisance but hopefully we’ll be on our way to Tassie soon. Hope you had a good passage home to NZ 😊⛵️
What was great, thanks for sharing. The world would be a much different place if we all had the island attitude.
It really would!! Thanks again for watching. Fiji is such a great place. The friendliest people 😊
Another sterling episode. But Tilly’s feet are too small to be a Tongan princess…… she will have to find another prince.
Thanks Claire. Tilly’s still looking for her prince …. 😆
Love your music!
Thank you so much 😊 ⛵️
Bula 😀 Fiji time Yes! the best time on the planet. F&K were so little when we visited. But they have warm memories the first time overseas for them. There had been a typhoon so we couldn’t see under the water but everything and everyone on land were beautiful welcoming and warm. I would love to go again I wished we had brought better supplies like a few story books and colour pencils and such- to the school we were kindly allowed to travel to. We weren’t well prepared. But the village was welcoming. From the sea I think you have the greatest entry points and opportunities to see more of a soulful land & people. Thank you for reminding me of the beauty of Fiji spirit and flexible flowing nature ❤ And 🐋 a whale! Wow. Is it too late for me to jump on a plane and join? xo Another safe (tho tiring) passage too - phew
Glad you enjoyed this one Mim and that it brings back good memories for you all! Definitely worth another visit, we barely touch the surface really...so many islands and beautiful spots...and the people BULA :D!. We are seriously lucky to be able to do it by boat! xo
It was a pleasure meeting both of you❤️
It was lovely meeting you too and thank you so much for watching our video 😘⛵️
Hope to see you both back in Savusavu soon❤️
@lizziecherry1 absolutely 👍. We love Savu Savu x
G'day guys. Great to hear you've arrived safely in Fiji. I missed a couple of your earlier videos, having been obsessively distracted by the awesome America's Cup racing in Barcelona. 🙂 But now I get to relax, watching you guys living your cruising dream again. And it sounds to me like Emma has got a bit of a taste for the ocean passages too! Well done, guys. Looking forward to following your Fiji Islands adventures. Thanks for sharing. Cheers, David.
Thank you, David, lovely to have you back on board and we really hope you enjoy our Fijian adventures. It’s such a fantastic country with the friendliest people. Bula 😊. Emma, while she doesn’t love ocean passages, has certainly learnt how to appreciate them (as long as the swells aren’t too big 😳). Great to hear the America’s Cup sailing has been awesome - we haven’t had enough reception to keep up. Hope you enjoy the first few videos of our Fiji journey and thanks so much again for taking the time to comment. We really do appreciate it 😊🙏⛵️
I remember that night at Davids beach, we were all worried about that big cat trying to re anchor over and over. Shame they hit your boat 😢 was a good gathering at the beach though. Artemis crew
Hey Rob lovely to hear from you. How are you guys getting on? Sam’s just editing the next Fiji video when we meet up with you guys again. We’re in Noumea now waiting for our window west. Great place to be stuck though. Yep - it was a really fun gathering at David’s beach 😊⛵️
Emma needs to kick your bit harder so you can get A coupler more knots. All jokes aside love your footage, love the music, love the songs have not missed a episode . Safe passages. Fair wins.
Thank you so very much for your super kind words and encouragement. We love a joke. Keep them coming 😄. Appreciate you taking the time to write a comment. Your support means a lot to us 😊⛵️
Actual Beauty Especially the human kind is hard to leave behind xoxo Love your films To see you both unfolding and meeting Peoples challenges thanking luck and skills - the screaming skills as valid as the calm skills I’m thankful not to watch a film of that experience and relieved you can smile on sailing - sail on smiling ❤
Love your comments Mim and that you are enjoying the videos of our adventures..hope all is well in the valley. xoxo
Thank you. I have not enjoyed one of your videos, I have enjoyed every one of them. love the music love the way you put the content together, and also being a ex sailor it touches the cockles of my heart. keep up the good work . Favourable winds to you both on your Passages.
So lovely to receive your encouraging comment upon our arrival to Noumea. Love that we touch the cockles of your heart ⛵️💕
LOVE IT
Ooh love that you have a wooden boat. We are 5 months from leaving in our wooden 40 footer. We aren’t as classic as you guys. We are a 1998 marine ply epoxy boat but we love her and will be doing Fiji too.
Hello 😊. How exciting for you guys. Fiji is wonderful. So much beautiful scenery, clear water coral gardens, and the people are just gorgeous. Where are you leaving from? All the best preparing for your big trip, it takes a lot of work but it’s worth it. Thank you so much for taking the time to watch our content and to comment. Happy sailing 😊⛵️
@@SailingNorla we lived in Fiji for 12 years before covid hit and forced us back to Oz. We are excited to get back and see the country via sail boat and enjoy its beauty instead of being so busy with work like our previous Fiji time. We will spend next season doing the Qld coast as we are not new to boating but very new to sailing. Then we will venture over. We aren’t sure where we will leave from yet.
@leezettb oh wow you lived in Fiji for 12 years. Can understand why you are so excited to go back 😊. Enjoying the country by yacht will be such a different experience. Wishing you guys all the best and please sing out if you are ever in the same bay as us 😊⛵️
@@SailingNorla will do :)
Thanks for all the Tonga videos. They have all been spectacular. Awesome people. Do the locals sell the vanilla bean? It's about $18 for 2 beans in the States. You handled the catamaran situation a lot better than I would have. I hope their insurance is paying for the repairs.
Lovely to hear from you and thank you so much for watching our Tonga videos. We loved it so much there. Like so many products in this part of the world, I don’t think the locals get nearly what their produce is worth but Inoki is a smart guy and he’ll be using his NZ connections to fetch a fair price. In Australia it’s super expensive too. Yes, the catamaran incident was very nerve-wrecking and the moment it actually happened isn’t on film. We weren’t so calm then 😆 The people on the cat were actually very nice and offered to pay for all damage but we are yet to send them an invoice as we’ll need to haul Norla out and make a proper fix it when we get home. Thank you again for your continued support. We love hearing from you. 😊⛵️
What can I say fantastic content absolutely love your music superfits the video and content. If nothing else you have inspired me to do or to step out of my comfort zone and tackle a few things for myself, love your videos and content, like I said before keep up the good work.
Thank you so very much for your enthusiastic and super encouraging comment. It’s wonderful to read that you’ve been inspired to step out of your comfort zone - this made us both very happy to hear. We love that you’ve found our channel and really hope you continue to enjoy our content. Welcome aboard ⛵️😊

Great vid, glad not too much damage, could've been a lot worse!
Thank you for watching 😊. Yes, we were very lucky that the cat swerved at the last minute. They were very nice people and it must have been scary for them too dragging anchor. Luckily Norla lived to sail another day 😊⛵️
Great video thanks from Fiona & John on Maïna
Hello John and Fiona how are you? Thank you for watching 😊⛵️. It’s a shame our paths didn’t cross again after Tonga. You must be gearing up to head back to NZ shortly.
