I think you took most of the recipes in the book as a "must do" when they were not. The book just tells you the recipes you can craft in the game in points where they could be useful, and of course, being a minecraft guide, they include every single recipe in the game even if no one uses it. So it's not like the books are telling you you absolutely have to craft those items exactly when they tell you to. It's just a guide, not a step by step tutorial.

the combat handbook does actually mention using beds to kill the dragon, it wasn’t as useful back then though since the dragon didn’t perch at the portal back then (in fact the portal didn’t spawn until the dragon was already defeated)
