Hey mate, love the video. My school workshop lathes have damages side feed. I think over the year the kids have damaged the gears by putting it in gear while it is working. Do you know where I could order the parts to get the auto feed up and running again?
You could try these guys australianmetalworkinghobbyist.com
Looks like my 49 KB 5, what a joy to drive
🏕🚐👍 Just perfect ✌️💃✨Awesome custom build 🚐🏕 Clean line build set up 🚐🏕 I am bouncing around searching for a reasonable reliable rig myself 👀 just tying up lose lose ends over here 🌎 over here 🌎😂 my inquiring mind is asking 👀 will you be selling her in the next couple years 👀🚐💃if so 💃✨ how much would you be asking?
NICE
I wish I could find my 1948 kb2 traded it for a down payment on a Volkswagen in '72 wish I would have kept it I had it 10 years best pickup I ever had 😥
You did an awesome job... uncle! 😂 But seriously, it looks amazing!
34:40 Why did you use silicone vs a polyurethane like Sikaflex?
I didn't use standard silicone. It was a structural neutral cure low modulus silicone called Tremco Spectrum 2. Interestingly it does have a urethane component to it.
@@handyoldfart Is there any advantage to that type of silicone vs a polyurethane like Sikaflex?
Sikaflex should be ok but would allow a little more flex. I think it is designed more as a sealant than an adhesive. Sika has a product called Sikaflex 292i which would be closer to spec. If you use enough mechanical fasteners any sealant that bonds to painted metal and fiberglass would likely work. You might want to contact the sealant manufacturer for a recommendation as I'm not an expert in that field.
Just curious if you still have this truck, how often it's run, what you use it for and how that motor is working for you. I have an identical truck, thank you.
any tips on where to buy the whole fiberglass thingy?
Nice job. Where can I find a hightop like the one you have?
Who did you buy the top from? Was it shipped to you?
Great finish work!
For this dude to say "I'm pretty happy with it" to Tufport is like getting a very positive review from a five star Michelin chef for your dish.
Ha ha. Too funny. Thanks your too kind.
I think I did solve the issue. I had to take the cab off to replace an up pipe and discovered the last fella doing a cab removal for the fuel pump replacement, didn't get all the electrical connectors done up tight. I haven't had any more no start issues and the reverse bumper sensors now work too as a bonus. Thanks for watching.
Did you fabricate the hightop or get a specialist to make it.
It is a Tufport, made in Canada
Great install and video.
A comment on the fuel pump for new installers. Should be at a 15° angle up towards the heater so air bubbles wont cause dry lock. 👍 I abandoned the mounting bracket and went with a combination of velcro and tie wraps. No clicking, totally silent. The rubber fuel hoses dried out from ethanol in the gasoline after two winters. Lost vacuum and fuel. Easy fix. Mufflers should be installed as close to the heater as possible weap hole down for moisture and exhaust end should taper at 10° away from vehicle off from straight down for the last 10" to avoid fire. Inside air inlet and outlet combined turns may not exceed 280° to avoid unit overheating. Side clearance for unit installation is 2" top clearance is 4" ( especially when installing inside the vehicle ). Torque for bottom bolts @ rubber gasket is 6nm. The exhaust tube should not end under the vehicle. You are allowed 6' and if you dip down and back up drill a hole for condensation to escape
Consider grounding the frames of your solar panels to the body of the vehicle as they will pick up static electrical charge from the environment just from being on the roof. 👍 My system is going to incorporate a solar combiner box on the roof with lightning protection and grounding. I really like your method of installing that high top I wish they had done that with mine when they built my van! Nice work and good video production ✌️
It’s great you were able to do that but the average person does not have all that equipment. But great job!
Really nice! Love your level of craftsmanship.
GREAT WORK !!!
Beautiful Truck.
I pull my pants up just fine in a minivan. It just requires a different technique.
Ha ha, yup humans are pretty bendy...
Really well done! My hightop is currently just automotive carpet glued to the fiberglass with no insulation which isn't very great since I'm in Colorado. I am planning to do something like this over the summer months. Do you think it would be worth attempting this myself or is the $1,800 that Wasatch Overland charges worth the money to get it framed and insulated? Then I would just be doing the finishing work.
Boy that's a tough question. It all depends on what you would like as an end result and what your skills are as well as what tools and materials you have available. Also how do you want to spend your time? I enjoy building but you may enjoy using the van rather than spending weeks on the project. Sorry, it's too hard for me to answer for you. But thanks for your kind words. I will say it would be a challenging project for the inexperienced. There are no straight cuts and nothing is level or plumb.
I've watched a few others install the top. You did the best installation with no problems. Great job over all.
Thanks for the kind words.
I am a fan of the high top roof. I like that you have a Quigley 4x4 conversion. How do you like your 4x4?
I like the van but wish I owned an oil company...
good!! 멋지십니다~~
Did you record some measurements of the tank? I’m looking at building an external tank for my diesel heater (regretting not buying a diesel van). Currently my tank is inside and I do not like that. I’m having a hard time finding a tank online that’ll fit in that space.
Great job Thank you so much ❤
Unless I missed it, you've carefully concealed and/or failed to mention what type of sealant/glue you used. Most installs I see use the butyl tape for the seal, you appear to be using a windshield type glue/sealant? How did you decide which type to use? Not sure. Otherwise superb installation.
I used structural silicone. Tremco Spectrum 2. This is a product used for glazing. Another brand would be Dow 795
@@handyoldfart Thanks. Have you thoroughly tested the hightop since then in driving rain, snow etc? Any leaks or signs of leaks?
@@drott150 yes we've taken on a 6500 km trip to Ontario and back. Worked great.
@@handyoldfart Thanks, I figured it worked fine. I recently purchased an empty shell 2009 E350 work van with a fiberglass hightop. It doesn't leak now, but I'm considering preemptively removing the hightop and resealing it before I proceed with my camper buildout. Normally it seems butyl tape is used. But the urethane type glue which I suspect is the same used on automotive windows you've used may be a better and more permanent solution. Appreciate your time. 👍
@@handyoldfart One more question: How many tubes did it take to complete the seal on the hightop, not including the fan or other protuberances? And your van is a standard length, correct? I have an extended van so I need to add a little for that.
The foot riser on the passenger side will probably help block heat on long trips too. I drove/rode team style in a Chevy Express and after about 6 hours, the passenger floor would get pretty hot. We thought the insulation had been removed since the engine temp was okay, but it all looked fine. It just got really warm after a while.
This Is Awesome!
Very good job! Thanks for sharing!
Wow super cool man the is my dream van love it you did a fantastic job wish i vould own one
What's the interior height?
In the back it is 76" and 73" in the front.
@@handyoldfart Thanks. I'm trying to look for one for my 2006 e250, but they're so expensive and can only find like 2 companies that do it. Which is strange, you would think there is a big market for this, with all the recent popularity of living in vans.
Turned out nicely 🤙
I just bought one of these little herus lathes Though I'm missing the part you removed at 3:55. What was that? Do you also know where i could get a manual for this machine ?
Amazing 😮❤
What an amazing job to watch! Thanks for videotaping it for us to watch. A man with attention to detail.🙌
Thanks for the ride. I have an all original ‘38 D2 that I enjoy driving whenever I get home.
I have an SUV, Tahoe, 2002 and I would like to add a high top where would I be able to get one ?thank you that was good
I don't know of anyone making those. It might be interesting...It would be a custom build I think. Lotsa moola...
@@handyoldfart thank you so much🙏
Great job !
New sub . Lots of interesting information . Thank you !
Can I ask what was the supply only price you paid for the Tufport Hightop that you installed . Thanks , Trevor
I just got mine up and running a few days ago. Needed a complete spindle rebuild. I converted it over from the three phase to a small vfd. Slight ticking sound from the gear train and backlash in it just like you showed in the gears. Wondering if you have tried fitting a south bend face plate to it ?
My 1948 KB2 panel came with a 4 speed.
Awesome job! I want you to know this is the best diy installation job I’ve seen on the net. Better than most professionals. Great attention to detail and even a fit check first. Good job on the fillet seal it will last a lifetime I’m sure.
Thanks for the kind words.
Wonderful work! I just purchased this van with the same top already installed. I would love to know the process you used to cut out your hole for the fan, how you avoided chipping and breaking the fiberglass in the process and how you reinforced the wood to fiberglass connection from the inside. Two of your videos are the only thing I have found that have been at all helpful for me on preparing for my build! Thank you for doing all of this!
The hole for the fan was cut using a jigsaw with a fine blade. Not much chipping really. I glued wood blocking up around the underside using bondo. Of course the screws coming from the top thru the fan base also hold the wood blocking in place. Good luck with your build.
May I also ask what size are your solar panels and did you also do wood blocking inside underneath where the attachment screws are located? I am curious because it seems like my top is just dead space where the panel screws would attach (other than the honeycomb structure of the fiberglass). Thank you again for posting your videos! You are the only good source I have found online dealing with the tuffport and chevy express cargo build. Just absolutely amazing! @@handyoldfart
@@rachellevanderplas3148 I did not reinforce beneath the fiberglass where the solar panels are screwed. The panels are 100 watts each I don't recall the dimensions. They were from Renogy Solar. Cheers
Great job I learned so much from this video you are a true Master
