(0:23) More specifically, that was Debian's installer back before it had a graphical mode, though my info may be inaccurate as I've never installed Debian 4, however I have installed 3.0 and 7. Ubuntu initially had separate live session and installer images before they developed Ubiquity (their installer framework) which allowed for installation to internal storage from within the live session. (1:21) I believe Ubuntu defaulted to GNOME because Debian defaulted to that. From what I can tell, Debian already offered at least KDE by that point, probably Xfce too, but they weren't installable from within the installer and had to be installed afterwards. (1:42) Oh yes! Hah, I ran this on an actual computer back in the day. I even installed it from the free CDs that Canonical used to send out. But I ended up better settling into Fedora Core 3 and didn't start using Ubuntu full time for nearly a decade.

Have you tried 16 colors? When the basic or display adapter driver gets corrupted, Windows will just go nuts by going to lowest color depth and will render slow. I have tried 256 colors on my old laptop that I removed my Windows 10 partition for a decade ago and installed Windows 7 where it was back on August 2024. Once I changed to 256 colors which is supported by Intel graphics driver, the screen goes to center and not stretched.
