hello
Thank you for the tips. I'm learning korean and Thai. I'm finding Thai difficult as some of the characters look and also sound the same. I've just started writing down the topics (I'm using drops). I finally feel like I'm getting somewhere as I'm starting to recognise more characters and patterns. Its early days but getting there.
@@joannemcnameeadams congratulations! just stay focussed and you’ll eventually find that these ‘difficult’ things get easier with time :)

aww tysm <3 and dw, it was already on my list ;) hehe
Yess its so important when learning a new alphabet or reading system, to not use [edit] too many English translation or phonetic aids at all, especially for characters you've learned. When I was learning Russian at university my professor absolutely emphasized that, and it helps you pick it up sooo much faster! I'm so glad I know that while I'm learning Chinese now 💗🙏
@@kamifaye interesting, how do you learn the pronunciation in that case? I can turn pinyin off on duo but I still hear the way it’s pronounced when I click on each word. I feel like with Russian, if you know how each letter is pronounced, you have a pretty good shot at pronouncing the whole word correctly. but obvs Chinese has different tones, so I think would struggle with absolutely 0 phonetic aids or audios
@@dariapolyglot Omg, I wrote it wrong- I meant not using it for characters I've learned haha 💓😂🙏 Apologies! We did use translations for new words, but for reading text we didn't use them- and specifically we could have translations available but never "easily," they would be in a different page than the text so our eyes can't form a habit of going to them.
@@kamifaye hahahahaha okay that makes more sense!! i agree, i still use pinyin in my notes but i try to limit the english or else i automatically go to it. i'm trying to limit my pinyin in preparation for hsk 3 but most of my hsk 2 resources include the pinyin 🥲
is the dorm within the university or is it off-campus? and are there more foreign students? i'm interested in studying abroad, in south korea in particular, and im really curious :D
@@padnoos heyy so this dorm is on campus and was only about 10 min from my classes. there’s obviously a lot of actual Koreans at ewha but I was surprised at how many foreign students there were as well. even just in general I felt very comfortable as an obvious foreigner in Korea, I didn’t have any bad experiences other than the cult thing lol
What classes did you take there?
i did a module on North Korean International Relations as i'm an IR major back home but i wish i took an afternoon class too, even though they weren't related to my degree !!
i went to japan to visit my friend and their showers were similar!! when i study abroad ill miss normal american showers 😭
@@glssbead I defo got used to it but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t miss the UK showers 🤣🥲
Dang! You're already there?!
@@manguostudio I’ve already been there and done that 😆 I came home to the UK last Friday, I only got round to editing this video a few days ago hehe
@@dariapolyglot ooohhh!! 😂
how does this dorm compare to the ones at your uni?? let me know! i'm curious :)
Yeah, definitely. I just realized that you can turn off Pinyin in Duolingo after you mentioned it in your video. I personally like to look at each unit’s words. It gives you a list of words specific to the unit you’re currently on; it’s well-organized, and all you have to do is memorize it. It also includes the stroke order, so I usually just scan all of the characters, not necessarily memorizing them right away but familiarizing myself with them. It’s like it’s inputting the information into your brain, so after countless encounters with the words, you’ll naturally memorize them over time. Just take it slowly and don’t rush it. Great video!
@@MacksChinese thank you for your comment! I didn’t realise it gave you a vocabulary list per unit, I only saw the handbook with grammar and stuff- where can I find it? I’m glad we both learnt something new 😁😁
@@dariapolyglot No problem! And yeah, I’m using an iPad, so for me, it’s at the bottom, second from the bottom left. There is a ‘文’ icon, and when you click on it, you’ll see two options: Pinyin and Hanzi. Just press Hanzi, and you can see the characters. It won’t show every character; it will only display the units you’re currently learning or have already learned.
@@MacksChinese ohhh yes, i knew about the hanzi page, but didn't realise it was split into units! super interesting regardless, 谢谢 :)

i'm finally home!! hsk 2 content coming from next week hehe <3

hihi <3
I haven't got any Chinese textbooks (yet.) so for the time being I self-study Chinese through Duolingo, as well as HelloChinese if you have heard of that app before. Even though in Duolingo there's a section where you can practise and memorize Chinese characters, I felt the speaking exercises odd just like how you've shown in the video and I'm not sure whether I actually did well on them. On the other hand, HelloChinese has got lesson structures and trees similar to the old Duolingo format, but with speaking exercises that pinpoint where you were exactly wrong in pronunciation and with listening exercises with videos and voices from native speakers instead of AI. Plus, the writing exercises are fun since they show how the characters can look like to get a better gist of their meaning! For these reasons, I get first on Duolingo for the repetition of vocabulary and then rely more on HelloChinese for slow, steady and deeper understanding. If you haven't done so yet, you can try HelloChinese out!
omggg congratulations

Much respect...you go girl! I think more people out there should do the same: read more and learn more...go out there and explore!!! We can all benefit this tiny world if everyone works together. Chinese people should learn Koreans and Japanese languages likewise the same for Koreans and Japanese people to learn Chinese languages. Break the Barrrier....Travel and see for youself: See is believe...It's modern reality and not a Fiction. Ps keep up the good work.
thanks i appreciate it!
I’m shocked at how well you can write hanzi, do you practice writing them over and over to get the stroke order correct? Or do you just guess it? If so what made you decide to learn to hand write rather than just recognise the characters? I’m on HSK1 and personally I’m focussing on just learning to recognise and recall them as I only plan to read and type the language rather than hand write… but your writing looks great!
@@nickb1178 thank you so much! stroke order is lowkey controversial because I asked my Chinese teacher and she said that in school, it’s something that they would only do properly when their teacher was watching 😭 so since then I’ve not worried much about it and just written the characters in the way that’s easiest and quickest for me! in terms of why i decided to learn to write, it’s just something that i started doing to memorise the words better. studies show that handwriting things make you remember them better than just typing them up. however as i get more serious about hsk, the higher levels require actual writing, so it just makes sense for all of my goals to keep developing the skill!
i'm flying home next week (crazy!!) so expect lots of hsk 2 exam content in august! <3
