  • @erikm8372

    I am so glad you brought up the key & the open tuning! Literally, nobody else has mentioned that…I agree it’s easier in G, and you can use the app Amazing Slow downer by RoniMusic to adjust the key…it’s a great app for $30. Used it for 20 years! But, still, I don’t think Martie ever adjusted her fiddles to make it easier (which may speak volumes in regards to her training). I can see her hand in the music videos, concert, etc. and she’s playing the root/tonic note (whether it’s Ab, Gb, whatever it is) on the D-string, with her fourth finger, since there are no open strings possible in that key and GDAE. Also she plays the fourth of the scale (Cb?) with her fourth finger on the A string. And the fifth (Db) on G string, as you say, for vibrato but also because she keeps standard tuning…Interestingly, and you may know this, but Martie is left-handed yet has always played a right-handed fiddle! Maybe that does something to naturally help her with dexterity? I can’t even fathom bowing with my weak hand. But anything’s possible. So if you watch the original music video (which is just beautiful visually) or any live performance of this song from before 2010, you can see her playing every note, not tuned down! I can’t imagine. It’s just so laborious, but maybe her being left-handed does her a favor. During their tour a couple years ago, the _DCXVII_ tour (I think that’s the name-the tour where everything was black & white themed, Martie had a white electric violin, etc), they actually performed it in G MAJOR for the tour! I was so surprised!

    • @FiddleGeeks
      @FiddleGeeks 10 месяцев назад

      I do see her using open strings on the video...she tunes down not for ease but for resonance. The instrument doesn't sound the same played in Gb with standard tuning. Fascinating!

    Do I squeak bc I can’t bow straight ?

    • @FiddleGeeks
      @FiddleGeeks Год назад

      That may be the reason. If it's the E string, you may have some rosin on the string. Clean your strings regularly and when you hear it start to squeak, dig in with your bow a little. On other strings, this may also be due to bow hand tension. Play with it and see what happens!

    Always hit the thumbs up button! Think the video was good and very informative. Gives people something to think about. Number 4 hits home the most. Made me think of one of my music teachers in six grade back in 1982-83. Had several that year, she captivated us with her unique style. When she taught a new song, she would bring the original in and let us listen to it and know how it was supposed to sound. Always made class fun and you wanted to try and be the best you could be. I think what keeps a lot of the "older" generation from seeking help out is limitations to do what is needed properly and the feeling of needing to get past " Marry had a little lamb" or Twinkle twinkle little star. After this series of videos I'd be highly interested in how you address these two issues with adult learning 🙂

    • @FiddleGeeks
      @FiddleGeeks Год назад

      I'm still struggling with that! I really have to focus. I added to my description some exercises your friend has probably already done with his neurologist. Doing these regularly will improve his general proprioception (as will things like brushing teeth in the dark and other non-dangerous tricks). I believe even lower body proprioception is important to sensing yourself in space, so I included everything. These exercises are great, too-- www.redboxfitness.com/proprioception/ In general though, relaxing the arm as much as possible and using the thumb to press up to refine the pressure on the bow (as I describe around 2:45 in this video) is key. Use your ear to gauge success. Relaxing is tricky after a CVA! I'll do a video with massage techniques if you're curious.

    You are a very talented musician! You are an amazing teacher! I can play some songs and just was not getting or understanding how to use or do shuffels and double stops. I was going to put my fiddle up for sale after Christmas. Now because of you I am understanding and learning lots. Thank you so much!!!

    What Christmas songs do you love? Traditional tunes or country music? (You got both in this video!)

      One of my all-time favorites has to be Silent Night. Played it as a trombonist and even got it on a fiddle. Love the old traditional tunes the best. Take me back to when times were simpler.

      Not sure if I’m sending this request to the correct place. Was wondering if you could do the angels cried in the key of E. Thank you so much

      @@AngieRabon Hi Angie, I'd love to do another video of this beautiful piece! Not sure if I can get to it in time to help this season. Start on the first finger on the A string and go to 2 on E. Play by ear, subtracting 1 from all finger numbers in this video and whenever there are open strings in the video, use the 3rd finger on the next lower string. Does that help? Let me know how it goes!
