Porter Yoshida Tanker Pouch Review - only the best for your EDC & Tech
Would it be long enough to shoot in portrait?
How does it compare to the Matador GlobeRider 45L? I am considering that one vs the 40L GoRuck for myself, and it would be helpful if you give me your views. Thank you! ;-)
great video. thank you for addressing the height of the bag and how the 26L may be too tall for those on the shorter side.
Simply love your reviews.
As someone who has purchased numerous Porter Yoshida products before these crazy price hikes, I personally think that the quality is not there imo for the money spent.
Do you think a 14inch Macbook Pro would fit in the bag without it looking deformed?
I also curious about this
Thanks for clarifying you don't participate in the rucking challenges. The audience was on the edge of its seats about the leaderboard
I wish everyone wouldn't just regurgitate this nonsense 'bombproof" claim. Aren't the owners like some special forces/CIA/overthrowing governments people? they should know even teency bombs can easily destroy a backpack. Have you seen the Palestinian refugee tent camps?
This Porter tanker is now officially discontinued!!! Soon to be a collector's item..I was lucky , I managed to buy this tanker but in black last year.
The problem comes once you put it on. I ordered 10 travel bags to try out and I liked this one by far the best when packing it. Was sure it was going to be the winner, just had to not be the most uncomfortable thing in history when I put it on. Unfortunately it was, in fact, the most uncomfortable thing in history. And this comparison was mostly against other backpack duffels, not even travel backpacks. Stuff like the osprey transporter, patagonia black hole, etc. The Seg45 was SO much more uncomfortable than any of them. The main issue is that it sits REALLY high. I'm 6ft tall and the bottom of the bag was more than a 3rd of the way up my back. The "hip belt" was half way between my nipples and my belly button. This not only feels weird on your back, it causes the bag to tip backwards and pull a lot harder on your shoulders. There is also one lone piece of stiff material in the whole bag, which covers half of the bottom. If the bag is not JAM PACKED (I had it pretty packed, my not quite zipper exploding packed) then this piece crumples. It also happens to sit exactly where the bottom of the bag touches your back, so you've got this hard crumpled thing digging into your back right where the most pressure is. Felt like someone was jamming a fist into my back and just holding it there. It was actually remarkable to me how uncomfortable it was. Even compared to other backpack duffels.
what ended up being your favorite?
Does the matador and or goruck meet carry on standard for American airlines?
The sage green color will eventually turn into silver/orange tone over time I still enjoy collecting Porter products for over ten years from now
Love the strap… hate that’s it’s made in Canada 😅
They are the Land cruisers of backpacks.
Was looking into this but realised it was discontinued! shame
hi, does the bag have luggage pass through functionality?
Hey, no luggage passthrough unfortunately. You could potentially rig up the backpack straps to act as one, but I feel like this still wouldn’t sit great on top of a roller bag. You’d be better off with a sub 35L imo.
It needs compression straps at that price point. No way that zipper will keep it structurally sound for very long with a lot of traveling.
The weight doesnt matter on this bag. If your airline restricts the weight for your carry-on then the size of the bag is too big for that airline as a carry-on anyway. When it comes to weight and comfort then the thing that matters most is how well the harness system works. This one is excellent as you demonstrated. Id rather carry this pack fully packed out than a 30L bag with a bad harness system. My zipper was super tight when i first got it too, but by the end of the trip it was fine. The zipper pulls did lose the shrink wrap and i will be looking to upgrade them i think. If you carry this bag you do need to have a plan for your tech if you have to check it. I carried a camera bag too that had a space for my laptop (made by wandrd). When i got to the airport, the matador got put inside an osprey airporter that i strapped on the outside of the matador with the compression straps. Then the camera bag got carried on with me. I think this is the best large carry-on that you can get. There are so many different ways that you can pack it and set it up for different trips. I love it.
How’s this bag holding up? Do you still recommend it as your top day pack with kids?
It’s continued to be a great pack. I’ve used it on a few more trips and it is holding up well with no issues. I think as a lightweight packable daypack the flexible back padding is better than anything else I’ve used in that class.
@@This-Stylish-Life do you have any other recommendations as a packable day pack for trips? Traveling using a larger luggage and a 35L backpack. Looking for something to carry all the toddler gear that I can pack up and pull out for day excursions in the city/beach.
@@azncargod689 Sorry for the late reply! I ended up looking into this and then forgot to reply. One of my favorites was the YNOT Deploy X that was made of X-pac and had dual water bottle holders. Unfortunately, it’s not discontinued, but you might be able to find it second hand. The one downside for it was that it lacked any internal structure, so it benefited from more careful packing to create structure. Other ones that I haven’t tried, but want to, are the AER Go Pack and the Waterfield Packable Backpack - if you want something that looks less outdoorsy. One other thing that I’ve been doing lately is using the ULA Dragonfly as one of our carry-on bags (usually with my son’s clothing) and then using it at destination as our daypack - it’s a good middle size that I think it fits both tasks well and is super lightweight.
@@This-Stylish-Life no worries! I did try the beast 18, but found its shape wasn’t ideal for my carry and for a tablet. I returned it and picked up and Aer Go Pack 2. Less back structure, but still super comfortable and way more internal volume (at least to me) and it has a laptop sleeve. No regrets at all. Thanks!
I wish I would have gotten the 26 L.
I have the same pair. I appreciate you're going to the full effort to soak to shrink. When I was a kid we took our raw/unsanforized denim and just washed it---hot, hung them till they were mostly dry, put them in the dryer to get out ALL of the shrink. This is heresy, of course but I'm here to say it works, there was no marbling or untoward marking. This "hard" wash gets out every last bit of shrink. The "trick" is to buy them not one but two sizes up. From your description you and I are the same size (I'm a bit shorter), mine were tagged 38 and are now a true 34. I think your method is by far safer but I think there is still some shrink left in those jeans---keep them on cold and don't put them in the dryer 'cause you will get more shrinkage.
Stay cool ❤❤
I could see a world where i put two slim packing cubes in the bottom and a accessories/shoes in the segmants.
10 yrs ago I had a nike backpack and it had a separate compartment for shoes at the bottom. My brother is still using it!!
These are pretty pricey. I’ll probably go for full count or warehouse before trying these. They look beautiful after the soak 🙌
bro! I made that camera strap! Ah thank you so much man 😄 I really appreciate that kind review
Dude, thanks for watching my video! And thanks for making an awesome camera strap!
I found a pair of new with tags 80s Levi's 501 STF size 36x38. My normal size in most everything is 32x34. I'm 6'1"and 185 lbs. The waist came out perfect, but the length dropped to 37. I got them hemmed, so they're fine. I have no plan to do it again. The potential financial loss is just too great.
Wow though, amazing to find deadstock STF Levis AND have them shrink up properly, you won the lottery. But ya, I was feeling a bit anxious taking the plunge on my first unsanforized pair. The sizing chart on Standard and Strange’s site certainly helped my confidence in picking the right size and I am really happy with how they turned out.
Great video! Appreciate the detailed STF breakdown, mate! Cheers 🤘👖
Thanks for watching, cheers to you too!
Nice video! I just bought my self my first salvage jeans and this is very informative.
Thanks! Enjoy those jawns in good health sir.
Hey Matt! We're huge porter fans too!! Why am I not surprised, haha. Sweet video.
Thanks for watching Nicole!! I wish everything I owned exuded the same excellence as a Porter bag. Have any other recs for Japanese brands I should check out?
Hey Mate, thanks for the review, really helpful!
I like the bar soap holder works pretty well have had positive experiences with it. They also have a pocketable towel that apparently dries off pretty quick but they're too small and also prefer the regular thick towels, I can see a use case for it but too small. The pocket blanket is interesting that comes with its own built in stakes to keep in place and would be nice in theory to use at the beach, parks or in the woods?
Glad to hear about the soap case! I think I’ll put it to some use with camping this summer. I do often pack a towel on beach vacations, but I’m with you on that one that I prefer a full-size. My go to is the Outlier grid linen - packs small, but still highly absorbent. The blanket has an interesting use case too. Overall I’m happy we have companies like Matador that are pushing development of high-quality and lightweight travel accessories.
I hated their laptop sleeve, it was too tight, too overengeinnered. I had to return this because I just wanted something that allows my laptop to slide in and out while keeping the laptop sleeve inside my bag.
It’s good to hear some dissenting opinions on these items too. I think all the Matador accessories I tested can be worthwhile, depending on your use case, but that’s kind of the conclusion that I came to in testing all of these - that they have really specific use cases and aren’t necessarily applicable for all situations or users.
Interesting video I think it would be more fun to do a rating system for each item like @Jeremy Jahns does with movies. It'd make it more fun and give a nice digestiable conclusion for each item. 💪
Thanks that’s a good point. I’ll have to put some thought into a bit of a rating system for future videos. I know I always enjoy product reviews with ratings, however subjective they may be.
Above 2 kilos, pushes it immediately in the 'reject' pile.
I agree it’s not ideal, but this bag does carry the weight well especially if you are looking to max-out that carry-on size. Outlier’s roll top dyneema bag that I did a review of is incredibly light, but unfortunately no longer available. Do you have any recommendations for a sub 2kg bag that I should test out?
@@This-Stylish-Life Yes, of course ... it's totally based on the individual's preference on fitment & weight distribution. I was just letting mine known. By and large, I think 7kgs is carry-on compliance safe-weight. If the bag is 2kg, you get 5 kgs of actual stuff. My Ospray Ozone 46's weight is 1kg which immediately allows me to add 20% more. But even then I don't carry the Ozone anymore. If I need to bring my laptop, I use my Minaal Carry-on 2.0 (1.4kg) Otherwise - which is most of the time - TNF Kuhtai 34 (800gm, good from treks), TNF Basecamp Duffel XS (970gm, best tying behind a scooter or tossing on top of a public bus), Tom Bihn Synapse 25 (822gm), Tom Bihn Smart Alec (860gm) for everything in between. Basically, if someone is using more than 35L, the carry-on only flexibility seems to fade. However, you can look into Gossamer Gear.
But what about Portrait orientation
Way to thin😮 Neck pain is guaranteed😢
Looks like a lovely well made strap but if i put my Leica M11 on that and wondered round central London I'd basically be wearing a big 'mug me?' sign.
I know the guy in feildworks..no literally but he makes good straps
okay okayyyyyyy 👍🏼 (I’m the fieldwork’s guy by the way lol)
Thanks for the detailed breakdown on the 34L, very clear and helpful. Just grabbed my own GR2 34L in Olive, been eyeing that color forever and it finally restocked.
This one actually looks nicer than the one from clever supply co. The leather looks beefier and the stitching is much preferred to the rivets, personally anyway. Nice video man!
love this, thanks 🙏
this might work with a small rangefinder style camera and a smaller lens (or maybe a medium format folder), but not with anything bigger. can't imagine this with a Pentax 645, even with the smallest lens, the 75/2.8. Side for me. Peak Design, but I have also a nice leather strap and an OPTech...
Absolutely, anything bigger than this and you are going to want something wider and longer. I use a Peak Design on my Sony and probably wouldn’t want a big telefoto lens sitting square on my chest!
I mean PM said it was "The way", so..... Nope, not my type of camera strap. I prefer the Peak Design Leash for versatility with my Fuji, and the quick disconnects to hang other camera on it when switching camera bodies. I have used the Peak Design Slide for many years with my big heavy DSLR's with 70-200mm 2.8 lenses and never ran into any issues or worries that it would fail.
Ya, I’ve got the Peak Design Leash too and have used it for years. I just really liked the high chest carry and couldn’t get the peak short enough for that. I think the PD is definitely the best option for anything bigger and the anchors are so versatile, but I do love this new strap for my Fuji!
@@This-Stylish-Life Great point, I don't own the PD leash, but was looking into it for my XT3. I am starting to like the leather half cases I have seen for the XT3. But having issues finding the Arca plate on the bottom of any half cases for the XT3. They have them for XT5 through LIM's. That would be my dream XT3 case to have the Arca plate built into a leather half case.
😂 I watched that PMcn and tried to get one too - what length is the one you went for?
Thanks for watching! I got the 28”
Thanks for the video. In the specs of the bag it says that the depth is 13 cm. That would be including the external pockets right?
Great video man! Love the EG jungle jacket especially. Almost grabbed one, but couldn't pin down what the texture of their "cotton sheeting" would be like in person. Looking like I missed out haha. Also your kids picked an awesome watch, tough to go wrong with a Casio.
Hey I just saw this review and really enjoyed it. Have you tried using this backpack for long distance walking?
I would say it’s not great for long distances. There really is no internal structure beyond what you pack and the shoulder straps aren’t super padded. If you keep the bag light then it’s not bad, but generally I’ve been using it in duffel mode more often than not. I think the Matador GlobeRider is a much better option for a 45L pack if you’re going to be carrying it for extended periods of time. Or another option if you like the segmented organization is the SEG28, which I haven’t tried but I understand it has a more robust harness. Hope that helps!
This bag or the SEG45? Thanks for the in-depth reviews! Going to Asia for 2 weeks and want a 1 carry backpack.
If you prefer a structured backpack and plan on carrying a laptop I think the GlobeRider is the way to go. Especially if you plan on actually carrying the pack for long periods of time. Caveat being to check the dimensions if you plan to fly on smaller local carriers and don’t want to check it. The SEG is lighter, but doesn’t carry as well in backpack mode - I prefer it as a duffel, but then your laptop is on the ground and there is less padding overall for tech. A third option, if you can squeeze in everything you need for 2 weeks, is the SEG28. I haven’t tried it, but my understanding is that its organization is functionally the same as the 45, but the backpack harness is more robust and structured. Let me know what you end up picking and have a great trip!
Does a 16 inch macbook pro fit?
Hey, it definitely won’t fit in the thin sleeve and I would say it likely wouldn’t fit in the pack altogether. If you’re looking to fit a 16” check out the larger version. You can tell it’s the bigger version with the d rings on the shoulder straps and the Velcro side pocket.
@@This-Stylish-Life thank you for responding!
Be careful with the straps, The woodland canvas bags have apparently been plagued with issues of ripping seams. Whomever they contracted this release out to dropped the ball.
@FactFinderGeneral Hello, where did you get the information from? Do you have a Goruck “waxed canvas” backpack yourself? I also have an M22 in the Woodland version. I also have some problems with the seams here.
Good to know, thanks. I just got my pack back from Goruck. They ended up sending a brand new bag, so hopefully no future issues. Definitely don’t want to have to baby a goruck bag! The warranty process went pretty smoothly, but I’ll keep the channel updated if I run into further issues.
