Talking hearing loss
Австралия
Добавлен 1 фев 2017
Here I share my experiences of not only receiving a cochlear implant but also of losing my hearing.
I'll also talk about hearing awareness in general drawing upon my experiences of having varying degrees of hearing loss for most of my life.
Lastly I'll be talking about various assistive devices and services available to those with hearing loss.
All my videos will be captioned but it might take a few hours after I upload a new video for me to correct RUclips's auto generated craptions

... I am deaf
10 years ago I was not in a happy place. I had denied accepting my hearing loss since my early teens but now I was working in a challenging environment where my hearing difficulties were impacting my performance and my quality of life. It became too much for me to deal with and I sunk into depression and became a social recluse and an extremely angry & bitter person. I felt that no one understood what I was going through but my self worth was so rock bottom that I didn’t have the strength to speak up to others about what I needed and what I was feeling. I basically didn’t feel there was any point in even trying anymore.
Alot has changed since then and I have found my strength and the voice...

The fable of the boiling frog

What does the fable of the boiling frog have to do with hearing loss? As it turns out, this morbid tale perfectly describes why so many people with difficulty hearing take so long to actually do anything about it.
Phonak TV Connector Review

Phonak's Paradise family of hearing aids have changed the playing field when it comes to concurrent bluetooth connections to a smart tv and smart phone since this older video was recorded; however Phonak's TV Connector is still very much a vital add on when it comes to being able to watch TV comfortably either on your own or with family and friends.

Alot of people are shocked when I explain to them the extent of my hearing loss because, according to them, I manage it so well (I didn't always but that's another story for another time) Here's something I put together which gives a very brief outline of my hearing history, how I learnt to hear again and some of the tips and techniques I feel are essential for getting the most out of your hear...

Dealing with hearing difficulties in the workplace - Talking Lifestyle Interview (19/07/2017)
Просмотров 1207 лет назад
Our workplaces can be challenging places at the best of times. But with hearing difficulties, they become even more so. On top of the usual tasks, there is the constant effort of trying to understand what is being said. It’s truly exhausting. What’s more, despite this effort, someone with hearing difficulties may misunderstand or miss an instruction- or worse, be overlooked for opportunities al...
My Cochlear Implant - 5th Mapping Session
Просмотров 9067 лет назад
Today my audiologist wanted to try something different. As I have felt that everyone's voice sounds several octave higher than they should through the implant, we are trying a new map where the rate of nerve stimulation is slower than before. My speech training continues with improved results coming slowly but surely.
My thoughts on Cochlear Implants
Просмотров 4907 лет назад
My cochlear implant has been life changing for me, even after such a short time however it may not be the right decision for everybody. If you're considering getting a cochlear implant, the best advice I can give you is to get as much information as you can about what benefits you can realistically expect but also the possible side effects. The final decision needs to be yours. Below are some F...
My Cochlear Implant - 49 days after Switch-on

Still making good progress though, the rate seems to be slowing down. What were new sounds when I was first switched on are now sounding much closer to normal. I've began using an audiobook to help train myself to understand speech better through the implant.

My Cochlear Implant - 24 days post switch on (including 3rd mapping session)

My 3rd mapping session and speech testing. I'm continuing to make good progress. Thinking back to how anxious and worried I was prior to the surgery, I can't believe I actually hesitated. Going through with the cochlear implant was probably one of the best decisions I have ever made! Some of the speech tools mentioned in this video Blamey Saunders hears Speech Perception Test www.blameysaunders...

Unit flashing red?
Please realize I do not mean any disrespect. But I have been told American Sign Language only has signs for about 3,000 English words. Was it difficult to learn how to pronounce the more complicated words that you have always seen on paper but did not have any sign for ? And BTW, I do hope you continue to have a wonderful life.
Mine is 1 year old and i got it from The Veterans Administration. Is it worth $300? No. If the TV is turned off, I continue to receive audio. Mine still has contols. The sound is streamed directly into your brain. I cannot have a conversation with anyone else in the room. Streaming eats up a lot of battery life.
Very good
Best to connect via the optic cable they supply with it. That way others can still hear the TV. The latest version has no controls on it. You need to turn it up or down via the app or your hearing aids. Cost cutting? Looks like it to me.
This is pretty much what my hubby got this month. It’s now 9/2022, 5 years since this video. Also a tv streamer and a mini microphone. The bag was heavy. So far, he is hearing better. Not 100%, but improved. Hopefully, he will continue to improve.
Are you sure that if I attach the TV Connector to my tv's audio output socket the others will still be able to watch TV with me? I'm surprised because when I use tv audio output socket for any other equipment it makes it impossible for others to hear anything from the speakers.
This is very helpful. Thank you. Especially with the analogy of the walking stick.
I am happy for you.
Hello, want to let you know that your videos have been very helpful. Would you do an update, now that it is 8/2022. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you for sharing, it’s really helpful.
My hubby has the same condition, 1 ear completely deaf, 1 ear profoundly deaf. Tinnitus in both.
Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for sharing, my hubby is getting this on 8/17. Cross my fingers that it will help him with both the hearing and tinnitus.
I tried the Costco ks10 version (same mfg as Phonak) and in fact the sound is perfect EXCEPT it turns off the mics so cannot hear any person/pet/crazy person breaking down your door, etc. An example of technology that some engineer / designer did not think thru. And my (excellent) hearing tech says that the music streaming and tv streaming adjustments are locked together. So if you want mics off for music but turn them up for TV, you can't.
how does CI HELPS in ANSD child
I know only a little about auditory neuropathy spectrum disorder; my understanding is that as the sounds are not correctly traveling from the cochlear to the brain, a cochlear implant would not be a solution. The cochlear implant stimulates the nerves within the cochlear, where as with ANSD, the signal is not being correctly sent from the cochlear to the brain. As I said though, I have limited knowledge of ANSD so my advice would be to seek the opinion of a specialist.
How did you become SSD?
Otosclerosis in left ear diagnosed when I was early teens. When I was about 19 I had stapedectomy surgery on that ear which was successful for a short period of time but after a month I got some sort of inner ear infection (combined with severe vertigo and imbalance issues) which rendered that ear deaf. Over the next 25 years the hearing in my right ear deteriorated to the extent that I am severely to profoundly deaf in that ear. So while I am totally deaf in one ear, my 'good' ear is still quite bad.
Beautiful Oblivion that sucks, was the right ear deterioration also due to otosclerosis?
Donkey Kong, yes indeed.
I wish this had captions. I am pre implant and couldn't understand much of what was being said. I will try again post implant.
Hi Nancy, the captions for this video have been corrected. Sorry they didn't work for you.
