    I have a 3 fund portfolio consisting of 33% S&P, 33% Total stock, and 33% international. I feel a need to focus on complete growth so I went 100% stocks, but does the SP500 and TSM overlap too much to make sense holding both? However I’ve been in the red for a month now. I work hard for my money, so investing is making me a nervous sad wreck. I don’t know if I should sell everything, sit and just wait but watching my portfolio of $450k dwindle away is such an eye -sore.

      there are tons of cool stocks in different industries to watch. You don't have to act on every forecast. I suggest teaming up with a financial advisor who can help you pick the right times to buy and sell the stocks or ETFs you're eyeing. They can give you some solid advice to make smart moves.

    Remember to focus on total return. There’s a reason why stable companies dividend yield is quite low even though they grow their dividends. It’s called capital appreciation. That’s why an index always wins over the long term. Stock picking is great if there’s a massive undervalued stock for some reason so get in cheap there but that would be the exception rather than the rule. Also most tax regimes prefer GCT over income for personal taxes

    Still don't know the difference...so an etf is a kind of index fund?

    • @JoeyTurVic
      @JoeyTurVic 4 дня назад

      Correct. An ETF is an index fund. S&P 500 is an index, but to invest in the S&P 500 you invest in an ETF that tracks the index. That’s why he said when the S&P 500 goes up 5%, the index fund (the ETF or the mutual fund) goes up 5% as well.

    I agree with what you say 100%. Stick to ETF broad index funds (replicating S&P500 and NASDAQ), build patience, don’t freak out during market drops and you are there. Initially I tried stock picking and even during a bull market it underperformed the index by about 20%. So sticking to index funds is a much better (and safer) strategy.

    👍#70 / Third advice at 4:51 😊. Not that difficult to pick promising stocks. Investing and holding for a period of 10+ yrs demands for looking ahead. Well, nobody could predict the future but my few criteria selecting single stocks are: *biz model* (data-driven instead of traditional, therefore focus on services/ecosystem), *biz activities* (international, therefore no start-ups or hyped stocks), *competition* (how much time and efforts/money would competitors need to catch up?), *innovation capacity* (how many successful innovations in which period?), *pricing power* (Nvidia currently has, Apple still has, Tesla had a few months ago), *revenues and profit* (trend for some yrs) compared to *debts,* and *free cash flow* (trend as well). Plus some soft factors (corporate culture) like owner-managed (for fast decision making), diversity (to attract talents from all over the world), reputation of the top mgmt. (or frequent fluctuation). Sounds like too much theory and too less number crunching of historical data? 😅 In 2013 I chose AAPL (one-time invest, bonus), in 2014 FB/META (one-time invest, compensation/redundancy payout). 10 yrs later, in 2023, AAPL had 1'400% and META currently (in 2024) has approx. 1'000% price appreciation (w/o dividends). Same/similar situation with NFLX, NVDA... 🎉

      The answer to this depends not just on your individual goals, but also the country where you live. In most European countries accumulating funds end up better for taxes, but in some countries such as Austria, the UK and Switzerland the answer is not so straightforward!

For me, FIRE is not interesting at all, over the years, besides my job, I purchased several investment properties, all the investment properties bring me the positive passive incomes. I have been in "retirement" since last August. Frankly speaking, I hate this type of life...although the money arrives on time, but life is way too much boring. I need to get myself busy. So now I plan to get back to "work"... either back to job, or find sth interesting to do, of coz meanwhile continue to diversify my investments. tks for the video

      I wouldn't say early 40's is 'too late' for anything related to investing. If you have at least 20 years left to put money into the market then I think growth is a nice way to lean. I would still have a balance of the two. I jumped into the market with about 75000 in 2021 and recently just surpassed ~$890K with ETFs/stocks being a big piece of the gains. I use a *CFA* for recommendations and market entry and exit points and it's a great hands-off way to approach it

    Tom - very cool video. Been watching a few of your videos :) You don't speak of withholding taxes here. Do you speak about it somewhere else? I still can't believe I am taxed withholding tax for dividends from EU companies - and I live in the EU!

    • @thetomcrosshill
      @thetomcrosshill Месяц назад

      Hi Steve! Withholding taxes are quite the complex topic! I don't have a YT video on this, although I do touch on this in some of my paid training programs. Basically, a lot of countries require companies to withhold taxes from payments made to residents (for example, in advance of their personal income tax payment). And many countries also require withholding taxes from payments made to non-residents. But this depends very much on the country in question, any tax treaties with the investor's country of tax residence, etc, etc. Also, rules differ depending on the type of company (or fund) and other factors. So in terms of making a video, it's really more of a topic for tax advisors than regular amateur investors. Every case has to be studied on its own. I hope this helps! Tom

    • @steveshuffle
      @steveshuffle Месяц назад

      @@thetomcrosshill really appreciate the thorough input! And yes, it's indeed a tricky topic. I find it that it seems rather useless to invest in stocks outside of my country, as any dividend doesn't result in only capital gains, but a withholding tax + capital gains. So I'm taxed, overall, high income tax (>40%!). Again, made very tricky & tax hefty for retail investors..
