stealing maps, xplay, cybershoke, cs2kz, and more (Counter-Strike 2)
xplay decided to pull a Cybershoke and steal maps for their CS2 KZ servers. Even after Cybershoke received a lot of backlash for similar reasons, xplay didn't back down or learn from it.
This video shows how bad of a job they did, and will hopefully make server companies talk to the community before doing poor work that can badly reflect on KZ.

Watching this video and thinking how insane it is that when Zaro, Hec, and I first started discussing dead strafing we all agreed it'd be incredibly difficult to do right and would be unfeasible. And now it's the primary method of strafing.

The alpha mask can be a layer and doesn't need to be its own file in S1, so your instructions are surprising.
It's not a power of 2 requirement, they must be divisible by 16.
@@MapSpawn the resolution needs to be to the power of 2 (e.g 2048×1024) Unless there have been some changes since this video was released, an image of 1600×1600 will not work
@@ReDMooNTVV It seems you're correct for some reason I never noticed this because naturally as a Goldsrc mapper I never used any unusual dimensions.

@@MaYeRsDz94 your custom materials automatically get packed with the map when you submit it to the workshop (assuming your materials are in the correct folders)

Hey man! Thanks for this well made tutorial! I only have a small problem; when I upload a CS2 map with custom textures to the Workshop and others try to play the map, the game crashes with the error code " FATAL ERROR: attempting to render with error material for 'materials/error.vmat' ". Do you have any idea/suggestion on how to solve this problem? Thank you very much."

The post processing trick is nice, but it does not work when the water is shallow enough that you can crouch to get your head under the water surface... I don't understand how Valve can make such a huge oversight to not include proper functionality for water...
it wont work with the post process. I also do not understand how something like this isnt in the base game
Put a thin layer of Trigger_Push entity at the bottom of the water also prevents you from trapping underwater

While I understand the criticisms of the ports being poor, i dont feel so strongly about the idea that these were "stolen". Mapping in CS has always been somewhat loose, at least on other gamemodes. Lots of assets and design choices are shared between maps and ive always seen it as closer to homage and resourcefulness than theft. People will do remakes and remasters all the time, hell about every other jailbreak map is some version of electric razer. Granted, maybe posting their banner everywhere in hopes of free advertising or deterring others from using their port is a bit in poor taste.
i think what you said is fair. Plenty of maps take assets from each other and one could say it's similar to "fair use", which i think is cool however, these maps are 1:1 ports that were very poorly made. The mapper was not even credited properly in some of them. Added to that, many, if not all of those maps were dmca'ed at some point but they somehow managed to fight all of them (idk if putting the maps as unlisted can do that)
@@ReDMooNTVV I'm curious to see if any of the original mappers have responded to this. I didn't stop to read all of the Discord messages you screenshotted, but my impression was that this was a visceral reaction from the community on behalf of the mappers. As someone with 5k hours in hammer, having made maps and managed servers, myself, and the mappers I worked with seemed to feel that publishing your map was the same as releasing it to the aether, any time it was seen on another server or reworked in some way, that was a good thing, more people got to enjoy it or felt inspired by it. If someone really wanted credit, it was up to them to add that to their map itself. Likewise, whenever something on our servers was broken or we deemed that it should be reworked in some way, we did just that and slapped it back on the server. I think maybe this paradigm is a result of how servers on CS:GO worked: maps were hosted directly by servers, so there's nothing you could do but mald if your map or some bastardized version was hosted by someone else. Now maps must be published to the workshop - which I suppose some could see as an attempt to take credit, despite it's necessity to CS2. I don't feel particularly strongly either way about this, but it is interesting to see this seeming perspective shift, definitely caught me off guard.
i am not aware of any mappers reaching out to xplay personally (most of them are not active). However, had they ported maps from more active members (such as spider1), there would've probably been private messages exchanged between them. This exact scenario happened when cybershoke did it i understand where you're coming from though, but keep in mind that most of the people commenting on discord had the cybershoke precedent in mind, including me
also i dont believe in "if someone wants credit, they should put that in the map". If i am porting a map that is not mine, i will make sure that i try to do a good job and preserve the author's intentions/visuals/gameplay and say that it was made by them. If we go by the quote, then anyone could just yoink any map that doesnt have the name of the author in it. I am mostly saying what i personally think here. I guess to each their own
i also forgot to mention that this is in the context of KZ. In csgo kz, maps that were approved for competitive play depended on the workshop. Vital information such as map size all depended on the workshop page of a map. There were rules prohibiting map makers from making any changes to the .bsp after approval
Where did you get your shaders? I'm trying to make a self illuminate texture but I don't see any PBR drop down for any of the current default shaders.

how to make the water texture appear when you go under it? it only shows black when i am under a water texture
i show it in the video. You need to use a post processing volume
@@ReDMooNTVV no not like that, the block used for the water is like only a few units thick, not the entire space. When i do that, the texture below the brush is black and norhing else. Is there any work around other than importing my own textures?

It’s so silly, networks like cyber shoke and especially xplay have such an opportunity in there hands to get a head start in building up the new cs2 kz community into there own servers but are sadly doing it the wrong way atm, with house of climb not as prominent as it was atm etc, xplay should really be doing a lot more to solidify themselves as one of the top kz servers for cs2, getting mappers and asking permission should be the easy part, hopefully it will all work out someday and we will all be kzing on a top tier server!
i hope they can sort things out and do things better. We are all working towards a common goal - making KZ more popular and better

xplay has got to have one of the worst surf map ports i've ever seen. cybershoke is better but id rather play on high fov but there isn't an option there.

im pretty sure xplay did this with some surf maps as well, surfing is still fucked because edgebugs haven't been fixed yet but the porting on a lot of the old maps on xplay servers is horrible. it wouldn't surprise me if all these companies are stealing maps

Whats their motive? I doubt they make any money off their kz servers.
looks like they give players the chance to receive drops (skins) when they complete daily challenges, which can comprise of stuff like - complete X map in KZ. You can buy their premium to earn more drops and stuff I guess what they get out of it is eyeballs on their sponsors?? I dont know how else they would make money. I guess that getting in KZ early woud mean having the exclusivity and the potential to build a small but strong player base
oh yea ive seen a guy say something along "damn im the only one gambling as part of an xplay challenge/quest" (on the gambling site chat)... so they are in a way bringing new people to the gambling website
cybershoke is the biggest cs project in russia so im sure they do make money
