Who needs talent anyway? I am learning to Get Good at Art. Follow my journey!
Light hearted
On my channel you will get to see the process that goes into learning a creative skill. Do I feel weird about sharing my attempts at sketching and painting as a beginner? Yes I do. But I am trying to set that feeling aside. And maybe, if I am capable of that, then you are too! So what do we need to do? Sketch, draw, paint, craft, enjoy and, share the fun with the world!
Help the channel grow 🌱
Like, subscribe and comment! The better my videos are doing, the more time I get to spend making them. Not only will this help improve my skills, it will also justify acquiring a better microphone (teehee), ultimately leading up to better content that is worth your time and entertaining to watch.
Why art?
Because I love it! I always wanted to be able to draw and capture visuals that made me feel something. Instead of moping around because my skills aren’t up to snuff, it is time for action. Get Good!

Practice time | Sketching skulls + Painting a Vanitas still life with watercolor (Beginner artist)
Просмотров 82121 день назад
Get ready for spooky vibes and.. skulls! In this video I will show you my process as I try to get better at sketching skulls. Yeah, that includes the awkward not-so-good part. My original plan for this video was to sketch you some skulls with pencil and ink, talk you through my technique, and that's that. Instead, I got a impulsive painting idea that made me way too happy to ignore. So I did th...

What makes your drawings and paintings look good? In this video, I am figuring out how to make my watercolor painting pop! What is the secret? No. But I bumped into so many ‘unknowns’ for this painting that I simply had to take the time to learn a few things😊 ◦ Website: commonpencil.com ◦ Instagram: thecommonpencil ◦...

I Painted a Magical Forest with Watercolor! | Beginner watercolor painting idea
Просмотров 1815 месяцев назад
Hi everybody! I'm so excited to share my first painting video with you :D I am a beginner at painting with watercolor. In this video, you can see my process as I learn how to brush, dab and move watercolor paint onto paper. My intention was to paint a mysterious magical forest that is part of a fictional fantasy world. Stories, yay! Note from the future: The tree has been given the name Bert. T...
Thank you so much for watching! Subscribe if you'd like to see more fantasy paintings :D
I think that choosing fine or rough paper is project dependent. If I want to see the texture from the rough paper I would use that and otherwise I would take the fine. I also need more experience to get the most out of rough paper, but don’t let that kind of ‘requirements’ stop you! You can only learn a tool if you use it 😅 Thanks for sharing your artistic journey! 🙏❤️ /Janne
@@Mr_Matrix Thank you for your encouraging words! ❤️ I do see now that paintings made on fine paper look more 'crisp' than the ones I've made on rough so far. The more we learn :D
@ Exactly. Don’t ever feel discouraged to try something ❤️ Sometimes I realise that I need to wait with some tools or techniques to get more out it later and with less frustration. That’s just part of the journey and every achievement is a small victory on my way to finding my own voice and style. No need to stress - just be yourself and have fun, and learn more on that you get curious about. That’s my way forward. I also get encouraged by following other artists journeys. Everyone has struggles along the way, and that’s ok! 🤗
Great first video!
Thank you!
Interesting and entertaining 😎
@@markbaigent8373 Thank you!
So inspiring to follow your creative process about Krampus. Thank you for sharing.
@@HolyNyphai That is awesome to hear! Thank you for telling me
Love your interpretation of Krampus!
@@tinyfishhobby3138 Thanks! :D
Hi everyone! Which watercolor paper do you like best? Hope you didn't mind my creepy intro too much 😇 Have a lovely day!
Glad it wasn't a scam! You're in a magazine! That's exciitng.
Yeah me too! Much happy :D
@@TheCommonPencil Will you be able to share the article when it's available? "Much happy" is a great phrase, I love it.
@@tinyfishhobby3138 It's already available! Here's the link for the online magazine: skylabnyc.com/export The Common Pencil's pages start at page 192 😄
Germany has some gorgeous castles. Very much like a fairytale. I was lucky enough to date a german woman many years ago and she took me on a tour of her home country one year and we visited some castles, among other beautiful sites. I miss them and her. :( Love your work.
I love your accent as well as you art. x
Thank you 😊
Interesting video. There is a genre of photography called “street photography” where photographers document daily life. Sadly there are selfish people who interfere with or interrupt others to get the shot that they want. Street photography is very popular in some countries and not tolerated at all in others. I would say “please do not interrupt me”
Thanks! Street photography can be awesome. That is actually good advice, thank you

Sketching live was so scary but also so much fun! I don't know what that grid was doing there though. Ah well, thank you so much for watching! 👻
This was really great to see! I had forgotten that I'd subscribed to your channel, so it was actually your thumbnail that caught my eye and made me click.

Aw yay more Norwegian art youtubers! (I was born and raised there LOL)! Subbed!
Hope it's not too disappointing that I actually am Dutch! Permanently moved to Norway about 5 years ago 😄 Thanks!
@@TheCommonPencil Haha 5 years of being there makes you part Norwegian :P
Awesome, keep at it!
Thanks.
Look forward to follow your process. I’m also on a learning journey in arts. My current goal is to learn more on how to make comics, and know how hard the struggle can be. I’m trying to focus on the process 🎨 Best whishes from Sweden ❤️
Comics are awesome! I am certain your efforts will be worth it :D Thank you for your kind words ❤️
It's beautiful :-)
Thank you :)
Just subscribed 😊 I'm very much a novice and just doodle. Would you be able to list the type of paper and drawing materials in videos to come? I get lost when looking for the right paper, pencils and paints. Glad YT made your video appear :-)
Welcome on board! Sure, thanks for asking. I will list everything I use in the coming videos. I can't promise you that what I'm using is 100% technically correct though 🤓 Glad to have you here!
I slowed this down to .25 at around 3 minutes when you're clearing paint at the top and watched it that slow all the way to starting the outlines for the foreground trees. The way you painted the bottom-right shows how to add subtle strokes that collectively create the foundation for the hillside perfectly. Actually the whole process is really helping my head understand what the seemingly random brush strokes mean. I really like your composition too. Nice work. Thanks for sharing. I feel inspired to try one like this.
So cool! Sometimes things just click. Happy to inspire :D
Hi Heleen, My name is Doug and I am a 63 year old man in central BC. I have recently taken an interest in doing pen and pencil drawings and eventually watercolour on pen drawings en plein air. I want to be able to chronicle and interpret my surroundings in a sketchbook so I can have a more tactile connection to memories, which are beginning to fade. I don't have those skills yet, which is probably what brought your channel to my attention (I love that I can learn anything on YT). Your introduction leads me to believe that here I will find inspiration in your free-flowing creativity. Thank you for sharing.
Hi Doug! Do you like learning from books? If so, I have learned A Lot from this book, and I think that, based on your comments, it might be helpful for you as well: ‘Watercolor: Let the Medium Do It’ by Valfred Thëlin. Valfred shows different kinds of painting techniques, using anything from painters tools to household items. Thank you very much for your kind words. I wish you all the best :)
great start, beautiful drawings :)
Thank you very much :)
I look forward to watching future videos. I have just started sketching myself.
Good luck, I am looking forward seeing where you go. 😁😁😁
Thank you! 😁
as fellow artist, giving you all the support
Thank you :) and likewise!
love fantasy art! and I also do a lot of watercolor too :) personally, i like to make weird, surreal landscapes. watercolor can be really challenging so get ready to have your patience tested, lol. it can create really nice effects though :) currently i'm experimenting with combining watercolor with watercolor markers and gouache
That sounds awesome! Thanks for the heads up :D Everything from mixing paint to applying it to paper feels a little messy and chaotic so far, but I so love the dreamy effect of watercolor! Happy experimenting :)
In a year I'll mention again that i subscribed to your channel at 100 subscribers and now its at 100k
Wouldn't that be something! We'll see what the future brings 😎
Glad to stumble upon your channel. We share similar situation, love art, not our day job, just want to draw for fun, and love photography. And I miss Norway. Subscribing :)
Welcome on board :)
@@TheCommonPencil thanks, I followed you on IG as well. We can compare notes there ;)
Awesome video ❤
One of my friends dropped a link to your channel in my discord. I am a new artist and I am doing the same thing. I do livestreams on RUclips where I practice drawing anime characters that I love and that my fans love. I really appreciate the journey your about to take and I really respect the decision to throw it all out there. I have 112 drawings under my belt and I've shown the world every single one of them, the good, the bad and the truly ugly. I think it's important to show all of it because there are many times where I can create something wonderful and turn around to butcher the next project. I hope if people can see the human side to the process, they will be more willing to try it for themselves.
I would suggest changing the channel name, you don't have a lot of videos up yet so it wouldn't be a big deal. It sounds like something generated by chat gtp and it's not very appealing. It also doesn't give much idea for anyone what your channel is about, a pencil could be related to writing as well. For people to actually click you need something that's more specific imo. Everyday Art, The Sketch Journey, Sketchbook Diaries, Art Student Diaries, The Anatomy of Art, these still appeal to a broader audience but each one implies at least one aspect of the content you make. They are just examples for what I mean tho, I'm not suggesting you should adapt any of these ofc. youtube is all about that title/thumbnail game.
Hi! I think you meant to write ChatGPT. I can tell you that I did not use that, nor any other name-generating AI. :) Thank you for your input!
The name she chose is good. It’s memorable and simple.
@@ninja_tony you can always test it
i look forward to your journey.

Hey Dan! Duly noted 😏 It makes me much happy that this video managed to inspire you :D Thank you for your very kind words!
@@TheCommonPencil I like your 'hosenträger by the way. 😎
Such a great video and you have such a great attitude! I'm totally shy about doing art in public and have only really done it where I thought no one was looking, like the library. Trying to work up the courage to do more outdoor spaces this fall. :) You have a new subscriber!
Thank you so much! I'm certain you'll find the courage :D
Good luck with your YT and drawing =)
Thank you 😊
Hey thats kinda neat, good luck with your drwaing/journey.

Nope, people taking photos without permission like that is weird...

I appreciate the history of your cattle and your quote also mentioned in the other comment- great work with the watercolors 😊
Thanks a lot ☺Happy you like it
I think I could get over myself and my insecurities if I was to sketch an Oslo as well I think this is a fantastic video. I like how you did everything I do have a hangup about working in public.
Thank you so much! Starting at a public space that felt safe worked wonders for me (the coffee shop). Maybe finding a safe spot might work for you too, should the urge to doodle outside become too great to ignore :)
I’ve been wanting to try this as well but I get stage fright 😅 I tent to first do a sketch at home then work on it outside.
@@Mercyyreid That's actually clever!
I like your accent, and I also love drawing in public I love drawing late victorian architecture and where I live in the south west coast of england so there are a lot of beautiful places and buildings to draw, I love loose sketching! Well done for making such a good video!
Thank you so much :) sounds like a super inspiring area for sketching! The Drama!
I'm so shy I'm having anxiety for someone else of the past(since this video is "posted" on RUclips). How could you?!?!?!..... Can't bare this idea of performing in front of people☠️☠️☠️
Well, someone's gotta do it! I took one for the team 😂
I stare when I see people doing things in public, but I do it in a sneaky way like a large newspaper with holes in it. Or one of those glasses with a nose and a mustache do they don't know it's me
