    Make the best speakers by mounting a completely open FR driver on top of a boxed woofer. As long as you basically do that, you can do what you like with them for the best sound. What I did is made cutaways on the cheap 5" FR driver and made a filter for it (but still basically the whole signal, except below 100 hz). And a large inductor on the woofer. The cutaways on the FR driver equilise the sound, making it way less shouty. Without the cutaways, try eq with with a crossover component filter. 😅

    I would bet that a kinked dome would make as much difference as cables. Both make a difference if you train your ears for diffences like when I design speakers (trying to get the best sound, by direct comparisons). Tiny differences are heard only on a/b tests! Never without a/b comparison cos your ears adjust to the sound. And that's a BIG factor in why audiophiles love their speakers so much. And that's why you NEED reference speakers when designing your own speakers. They stop your ears getting used to your (wrong) speakers. Like what happened to me before I spent 2 grand on reference speakers. Or get a soundproof room and all that gear. I chose my ears and my reference speakers and my Audiolab amp. Cheap and it works (even if I hate my B&W 706 speakers). They are still great for frequency level (especially bass) cos the bass varies by 7 clicks on the bass level when I walk arond my room. Need bought speakers to get a bass level. 😅 But my made speakers absolutely flog my B&W 706 speakers. Only a small detail, that is the voice sound is not "throaty" enough on my reference speakers. Not by a mile, and brass sounds like wooden instruments. 😅 I took my made speakers to a hifi shop for evaluation and they absolutely loved the made ones. 😅 They are open FR drivers on top of a boxed woofer. HFreqencies double in intensity when open (and sound like tweeters) with the highly modified open FR driver. And it's a dipole sound. Another reason they flog my reference speakers. It's an acoustic thing, more 3D!

      I appreciate you watching my videos. There are many that also claim that it wont make a difference, and doesn't measure different. I have heard dented, and I couldn't hear it. I could feel insecure though about it. Your channel is very cool. Thanks for watching!

  • @Justwantahover
    @Justwantahover 3 месяца назад

    2:35 It would probably sound better with the dent mark in it (after pulling the dent out with tape). The dome isn't as ridged anymore and moves with the signal easier. I reckon.

  • @bigd835
    @bigd835 3 месяца назад

    I have one of these. with 8 ohm speakers you have to turn the volume to 80 percent to get relatively loud sound. i put some 4 ohm speakers on it, and its much better. plenty of power with 4 ohm speakers.

    Not true. The Ethos has already the 2nd generation of XStat panels. Other than the delicate 1st generation panels (like on my Sequel II), these new ones don't accumulate any dust even after many years of daily use. Instead of bashing your non fully working speakers and trying to discourage others not to buy these absolutely marvelous beauties, you should have either returned yours to the seller or sue him. You should have been willing to come to a reasonable agreement with this dishonest seller because you were duped, period.

    • @newsboyaudio
      @newsboyaudio 8 месяцев назад

      I highly disagree with you on the dust issue. The Ethos users are reporting problems all over the place. I also didn't bash the speakers. Electrostatic has a problem with short lived panels, and all of the makers experience it. The panels I had also had the issue, and the martin logans own support forums, as well as the unofficail ones, disagree with you. I got the money back on the speakers, and I will be purchising more electrostatics in the future, but I prefer the magnepans, or even the non-panels (like the Focals) more.

  • @MAB_Audio_Nut
    @MAB_Audio_Nut 8 месяцев назад

    If I was going to compare Magnepan to Martin Logan I would try to get closer in price range. Something like the 3.7i would be a closer comparison on the used or new market. Most of what you said is all very true. I don't see that you ever did a follow up to this comparing the sound?

    • @newsboyaudio
      @newsboyaudio 8 месяцев назад

      Thank you for your comment. I offer my opinion in the video. I prefer the Magnepan due to the issues Martin Logan has, and the increased cost. The Ethos sound better though, but the reliability of the panels past 20 years is a massive problem. This is assuming the new Quasi Ribbons are more reliable, without de-lamination issues. The added cost, especially considering getting new panels for the Ethos every 10-20 years is a massive problem. I may get a pair of ESL's next.

The ones I have are almost certainly aluminum as they've been replaced and are not Black Color. Which is part of my concern. • @newsboyaudio
      @newsboyaudio 9 месяцев назад

      Your woofer on the HIVI should not deteriorate or crack. You need to apply no products to it. and there is no reason you need to touch them. They should be good for many years. The only woofers I knew that deteriorate or crack are old Paper cone drivers where the paper is untreated. I don't think anyone makes them any more, and haven't since atleast the 70s. As far as anything that breaks, you can recone it or get replacements. I do not see many modern speakers that break. Finally, you may need to replace the foam inserts on some speakers around every 20 years. Again, nothing to apply can slow this (That I know of) and its a simple thing you can do yourself.

So are you saying your amplifier isn't designed right? And if so why don't you buy a better amplifier as that is cheaper and better then trying to fix a broken amp with wires?

    My experience with the HIVI Swans 2.2 DIY Kit is completely opposite of yours. I got mine for Christmas last December of 2022 and haven't been happier with their stock performance. The original included crossover and design works perfectly for them, they are not too bright (at all) and the bass, OMG I can hear 25 Hz out of them on a subwoofer sweep videos from YT! Sounds to me that you bought either an outdated design or whoever put the crossover for the ones you got - probably did it wrong, since you said you paid $350 for them and they were already pre-built. I'm just saying this here so no-one gets discouraged from buying these, because they do sound amazing. And I'm not alone, @SkunkieDesignsElectronics built hers and is also extremely satisfied. Thanks for sharing your experience, I'm happy to know if there was an issue with this kit in the past, it's been resolved for probably a year now. ;)

      You clearly didn’t watch the video. I’m not sure what you’re talking about. My review was positive towards the speakers. I also defend the speakers in the comments. I only addressed the criticism others had. In fact I compared the tweeter to a tweeter that costs 2,000 and claim their very good. By the way… The focal tweeter I compare them to is widely considered one of the best in the world. But I’m sorry, the HIVI speaker is 300 and it’s not perfect. If it was, hivi would sell it for more. The competition at this price is also tropically bright, You’re not hearing much at 25hz, and you’re ignoring the companies own claims. And the reality of a small woofer. I suggest you look at any frequency responses or take measurements. I took my own measurements. The cross over works as designed and they’re a bit bright.

Kevlar, Aluminum, and most Plastics are good for 100+ years. Anything modern should be good for many years, except super cheap stuff. Technically, the paper cones can be re-coned, and I haven't seen a pure paper woofer for around 40 years, so really only a problem with REALLY old speakers that didn't use a coating. Also, you have problems with the rubber surrounds around the 20-30 year mark. That is very easy (self) repair. And, should something fail, there are always parts available for speakers, or there are ways to fix them yourself, or hire someone to fix. Though, problems are extremely rare. There are also other exceptions, like the ones in the videos. Maggies, should be good for a very long time after version 1.6.... They SAY they have solved the delamination issue with their quasi ribbon design, yet it hasn't been 50 years to see. Maggie continues to support ALL of their speakers, so repair kits are available. So before that, make sure to see if they need repair. Electrostatics have two problems, delamination and dust. They panels typically need to be replaced or repaired (like ESLs). Martin Logan supplies parts for ALL of their speakers, they every produced. Though cost of thoose parts can be a problem, though their performance keeps their owners happy. As with electronics, there are more problems then with speakers. Electrolytic capacitors are the biggest one. They have a general lifespan of 15 years. Though many will last further. Tubes also fail, regularly. After that, you get into dates of 50 years. And yes, you can repair many electronics if you have a failure, but not many IC boards are repairable if parts stop getting supplied. And some units may have limited supply of parts in them, that if they fail you can get stuck with something you can't fix. Plus many other problems, especially with inexpensive electronic. The biggest issue with repair is safety. Though it can be done, caution must be practiced around electronics. Unpluging it isn't enough. See repaircafe or training for this. I will try to come up with a video for this stuff. Maybe a guide buying used speakers would be good. Speakers end up beign extremely safe to buy, used. Just make sure to fully test them, with reliable equipment upon receiving them. And SHIPPING INSURANCE!

    these speakers are extremely harsh especially for young people like me, before redoing the crossover I kept them with the amplifier at -5db on the highs to make them tolerable

    • @newsboyaudio
      @newsboyaudio Год назад

      Thats interesting, they are measured bright but not 5 db bright. They are measured 1-2 db bright. Which is not unusual for a speaker this price to be a bit off. Maybe you have a problem with your original crossover. But I talk about this in the review, and mention the crossovers.

      @@newsboyaudio on the last page of the HiVi 2.2 thread on diyaudio forum you find my measurements with and without the crossover, 5db too much, with the new crossover design i tamed down the tweeter by 10db, but I'm young, older people could prefer more highs

      @@newsboyaudio at first the crossover aimed for a more linear response on the treble but trying it with reference songs the treble still sounded harsh and by ear they were lowered more by matching other linear speakers

    Used to sell both these speakers. The Maggie's require a larger space and are ungodly fussy about placement. They also have consistency issues, which is a big reason retailers avoided them. MLs require less space and placement is more like a conventional speaker. Soundstage is much more defined in MLs and more immediate, and midrange more analytical. MLs are the better speaker, but if you can get enough amp behind the Maggie's and the right room they have an excellent balance between grandiose soundstage and transient detail.
