I just saw this show and loved it. I am a fan of the Avett Brothers and thought their music connected to the story really well. They did write one new song for the show
Thanks for the comment! What was the new song?
This show was so busy trying to be entertaining that it forgot to be good. Choppy story. Inarticulate, forgettable score. And (SPOILER ALERT) an unjustified double-homicide in the 2nd act. Great fun -- not.
More shows should end with double homicides. Worked for Romeo and Juliet. 😛 Thanks for the comment!
How can you review this show and not mention the costumes in detail?! So many times I was looking at the constriction of the voluminous jackets and dresses and was just gasping over how many yards of fabric it must’ve taken!
Costumes were great! I try to keep these reviews under ten minutes and I focus more on the writing since that is the area I know the most about. The is a very expensive looking show and a lot of that money went into fabulous costumes for the three women.
@ fair! I think the mention that it’s like a drag show is a close one. The phrase “no expense was spared” crossed my mind throughout the night
I guess I’m in the minority because I knew in knowing that the song was spelled “gaze” not “gays”,…..as I passed the merch table before sitting down and it was printed on one of the t shirts.
I knew it was "for the gaze" as well, and I think that in context of the show, she is singing "I do it for the Gaze" but is so obsessed with herself that she doesn't realize her lyrics can be easily interpreted as something else, but she's also playing into the hands of the audience at the same time I thought it was absolutely genius
I guess I should have spent more time at the merch stand before the show. lol
Did you see a T-shirt too?
@ I am usually rolling into the theater so close to curtain that I don’t have time. But since I went with my mother who needs extra time to get from point a to point b, we got there about 25 minutes before, so we were able to look at each item. Sad there wasn’t a pen in the shape of the potion or something like that.
Sorry, Sunset BLVD.!!!! is a lousy show that lives or dies by its lead actress. I didn't like the original even with Glenn Close, although she was infinitely better than Nicole. Betty Buckley, on the other hand, was transcendent....THE ultimate Desmond! - This show is probably Weber's worst. But this needless re-imagination descends BLVD into the bowels of theatrical hell. The camera gimmicks, lack of sets and costumes, bizarre staging and incoherent direction are distractions from an already mediocre score and "libretto". At least the original had an opulent set, conjuring Hollywood faded glory. Here we are forced to use our imaginations, like watching a non-equity kids show on tour. This production was obviously conceived by a bunch of cocaine snorting theater geeks during a drug induced orgy in a random dorm. Instead of spending daddy's money on an actual production, they irresponsibly pulverized and snorted it. The next morning they had an "uh-oh, what do we do now moment, let's trick them into thinking it's art." idea. So they bought a used smoke machine on E-bay, got some high school kids to hang a few lights in exchange for cold half eaten pizza, jumped the turnstile and took the subway to Kings Highway to find black underwear at a Russian going out of business dollar store. To cover their asses, they advertised BLVD!! as art, hoping pretentious gay snobs would buy into the prank, which some did, further perpetuating the lie. The victims here are the audiences who pay insanely bloated ticket prices for nothing but a hallucinogenic prank. BLVD!!! is both instantly forgettable and unforgettable in a I-can't-unsee-the-mass-shooting kind of way. Like so many other ill-concieved "re-conceived" commercial productions, BLVD is only there only to extract money from your pocket. It's mirrors and smoke blown up the asses of the gullible and arrogant. But there is one theme that is redeemable. Nicole is as lost and wasted as the show itself. Her bloody performance is unbelievable, for she is not believable for one second especially when covered in blood. The kids that pulled this sick theatrical schtick off are laughing all the way to the bank.....right after they meet their drug dealer.
Preach! Love your passion and the image of Jamie Lloyd coming up with his concept for the show after an all night cocaine binge. LOLOL
@@MatthewHardyMusical Preaching the truth is preaching love. Preaching lies is why Broadway, and this country, are both a mess.
@@consrevilgreen9117 I don't know if what you're preaching is the truth or a strongly held belief. But point taken.
My Favorite Review about this piece of shit show. The campy West End production of the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical SUNSET BLVD. has hurled itself onto the Great White Way and rarely have I ever witnessed minimalism being so obtrusively excessive. What this adaptation lacks in axiomatic intention, theme or detail to plot is more than made up for with some preternatually high-pitched ululating from a faded film star that will surely resonate with gaggles of yeowling gay men, not unlike those seated near me, determined in their own strident way to drown out Norma Desmond's sanguine yet protracted declaration that she'd "come hooooooooooooooooooooooooooome at laaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaast". Nicole Scherzinger has a remarkable set of pipes and is thoroughly committed to her execution of this interpretation of Norma Desmond as directed by Jamie Lloyd Co. (who recently helmed the sit-down production of A DOLL'S HOUSE {ba-boom-keesh!}). Lloyd does keep one guessing from scene-to-scene if he actually likes this musical or if this is a fervid Andy Kaufman-style stunt that he's pulling on Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber which unfortunately would then be tantamount to elder abuse. I'm going to go with the former and further ponder if this is possibly an audacious exploration of style over substance...and speaking of style: Tom Francis, who is grounded and wonderful as Joe Gillis, also has the most remarkable hair. In many of the uber close-up camera/film moments that make up this theatrical endeavor, I kept finding myself distracted from whatever was happening on stage and drifting away thinking, "His hair is otherworldly; what product is on there? It's shiny and bouncy and holds its shape - is it that 'Spritz' stuff that's sort of a gel hairspray?" No clue what was happening during these moments, as the filmic elements did take away some live dynamics of the performances by manipulating a particular perspective of the scene, but his hair looked FAB-U-LOUS. Despite this Norma not having much of a character arc (she starts wildly-unhinged and ends wildy-unhinged only now slathered in blood) and Max often being relegated to a visual joke, this style of production brought back Proustian memories of my college days when we would dress in black undergarments and put on plays in black box spaces; not because we were so experimental but because we had no budget. Overall, there is a lot of thought going into this revival of SUNSET BLVD. I don't know if they are good thoughts but that's for the individual to decide. I can't definitively speak to the intention of the tone of the show but I was thinking that if the Met Gala ever brings back the "Camp" theme (that most participants several years ago did not seem to understand) they might ask Jamie Lloyd for his suggestions and I'd bet they'd have a solid hit on their hands. #SunsetBlvd Ken Kleiber
LOL Love this review! where is it from? Love the tangent about Tom Francis's hair. Love the idea of excessive minimalism and questioning whether Jamie Lloyd actually likes the musical. I agree with most of this review and yet I had a great time watching this crazy revival.

Sadly the days of classic, original, intelligent musicals is over and we are left with the factory of thrown together musicals on popular movies -most by mediocre unmemorable composers. We have seen it all: Back to the Future the Musical, Mean Girls, Big Fish, Catch Me if You Can etc. On and on. It was only inevitable that Death Becomes Her would become a musical. Though I haven't seen it in person I of course originally though that no actresses would get the same amazing chemistry as Meryl and Goldie and Isabella, and that the musical would be problematic for the stage. This is coming from a Musical Theatre vocal professor. So from what I have seen thus far--even believing Jennifer and Megan as youthful 20s is laughable. Music is ennui and though the musical tries be camp and fun.. it misses the mark and seems rather tragic. I will of course eventually see it... but forgive me if I say I still prefer the days of Kander & Ebb, Jerry Herman, Stephen Sondheim, over much of the crap on Broadway today. And with the cost now of ticket prices .. most of my NYC friends said it was really mediocre and not worth seeing. And most patrons post-covid are like--if I'm going to spend $100 or more on a theatre ticket it better be fantastic. And of course much easier to curl up on your couch with a pizza and the beloved original movie at home. Just sayin'
I HEAR YOU! This is why I felt so guilty giving Maybe Happy Ending a mixed review. It is one of the only original show this season. All of those writers you mention did adaptations of plays and movies, so the big question is what has changed? Were they just better writers? Were they choosing better material to adapt? Or are we forgetting all of the flops that would open on Broadway every season and only remembering the hits?
not feeling you---
No worries. Lot's of other content out there!

The "Gaze" went over my head as well till you mentioned it. I don't think it makes sense as all her jokes in the song were of gay stereotypes. I washy a fan of Michelle Williams at all.
I'm surprised no one in the creative team pointed that out to the songwriters.
I really think you should change the title of your reviews as it looks like you think everything you saw was Boring & Confusing!
On some level everything is! LOL It was either opt for an eye catching title for the playlist or come up click bait titles for each review. I opted for the former because it's just easier. And I explain the title within the first 10 seconds of every video so the confusion shouldn't last long. Maybe I shoould add a question mark?
@@MatthewHardyMusical Yes a question mark would be good. I am fine with the concept of whether you were 'bored' or 'confused' - but if am searching for a particular show (one that's good even) and your review comes near the top of the search listings, I worry that someone might just see the B&C note thinking that's your final summary - when it actually is neither of those.
@@j4m3sg Good point!
The reason Helen introduces her fiancé to Madeline, is to see if he can pass the “Madeline Ashton” test. This is explained in the film version.
Is the test to see if he can resist her charms? So he failed.
Yup. Just like in the movie.
@@paulst.austin1015 These are som messed up people.
@@MatthewHardyMusical Well, of course they are. If they were mentally stable people we'd be really bored.
I like your review! Going to subscribe. Yet another B’Way show I have no interest in seeing. I think the movie worked as well as it did because it was Hollywood taking a swipe at its own absurdity. That and Meryl Streep was freaking hilarious. Curious - did they have Helen go into a funk & get overweight? Right off the top of my head, it could be fun to see a live action version of Helen rewinding the video tape of Madelyn’s melodramatic tv movie strangling. You hit on a point that mirrors the movie - the second half felt like it kind of didn’t know what to do with itself. It was a fun movie, and the funny scenes are magnificently rewatch-able, but overall inconsistent, yet, yes - iconic. I really wish someone would bitch slap Broadway in the face and say “Stop making musicals out of 90’s movies, already!!!!” ;)
Thanks for subscribing! They didn't have Helen get overweight. They had one short scene between Helen and her therapist/doctor where we saw how obsessed she was with Madeline. Honestly, a 90 minute movie is ideal for adaptation because it leaves a full hour for songs. But if you're going to adapt an iconic movie that has issues, you have to solve those issues using the magic of musical theater. I love that Hairspray the Musical created a finale that worked bette than the ending of the movie. Sadly Death Become Her wasn't able to do the same.
@@MatthewHardyMusical Yes! to "Hairspray"!
I agree entirely with your review. I saw it in Chicago and didn’t care for it. As much as I admire the performers, I found the show shrill, exhausting, and pandering to the gays (I am one.) I also made the drag connection. The prime market for this show seemed to be straight girls who enjoy drag brunches and Rupaul’s Drag Race along with their gay besties. Nothing wrong with any of that, but not a show for me.
Funny you should say that. There were two squealing young women sitting behind me that were getting on my nerves. They were so loud that I couldn't hear some of the lines and lyrics.
@ That would drive me crazy.
@@SLisheron1 Yup. That's the risk you take when you go to the theater.
I have no interest in seeing this because the movie is a beloved part of my childhood and they could never even begin to attempt to capture the lightning in a barrel of the movie. And if you can’t do the effects properly, forget it. Other movies I’d be more forgiving, but not this one!
I love that you were watching Death Becomes Her as a child! LOL Yes, that is the question with any adaptation - "How are they going to make it better or at least different enough from the source material?" I don't think this succeeds on either count.
Also loved the movie as a child and the musical was absolutely amazing!! Just saw it a few days ago in Preview. Really fun to watch :-). Great actors, great costumes and the whole vibe was gorgeous! Can absolutely recommend it.
@@behappyandtravel Thanks for sharing! So glad you loved it. Spread the word!
I saw it on a comp. It's fun, but not worth the price of a full price ticket. You're right that none of the characters have good character.
It's difficult to watch a show where everyone is unlikeable. I know that can work with a television show like Seinfeld or Always Sunny In Philadelphia. But I can't think of any successful musicals that have all unlikeable characters. Can you?
it's the same problem with the movie and they even went back to do reshoots and appearantly didn't think of this missing element either. This is what I came up with last year. The maid Rose had 3 deleted scenes, plus she was also at the Menville wedding that got cut. + Rose gets told to work in the evening cause Mad has to look her best for the bookparty. + Rose helping Madeline with her dress on the stairs... she explains she would have left Madeline if she hadn't been such a masochist. Then Madeline goes off at her and tells her about her own sad youth being born in a trailerpark, abandoned by her father. Rose has heard this a million times before and mouths all the words with her behind her back. + Rose comes to work in the morning and finds Madeline stuck in the freezer. She panics and as Ernest tries to make up an excuse she has had enough of him drinking so she rips his drink out of his hands. When Madeline has been taken out of the freezer she goes walking round the house like some freaky frozen zombie and Rose gets fired because Ernest tells her they have sold the house. She gets very upset and tells him she was so happy there. He then gets Rose out of the house and lifts Madeline up the stairs to start spraypainting her. They could have left the entire original film intact and add the maid to the third act at the bar. Since Rose LOVES her job and appearantly has no problem being treated by Ernest & Madeline as a punching bag she would eventually return to their house, notice all the weird stuff and then re-appear in the 3rd act at the bar where Ernest staged his death. (This is all based on the original cut of the film) Madeline and Helen have retreived the potion bottle back from Toni (a cut love interest) & Ernest (who is playing dead by dressing up a dead guy in his clothes)... Then they could have had the maid pop back up but after realising there is no more Ernest (who treats her slightly less bad than Madeline) she really doesn't want to work for just Madeline (and Hel now). Madeline hires her back and wants to touch herself up so she asks Rose to hold the potion as Mad and Helen walk to their car. Then the women notice they have started to peel and panick... then they hear the screeching of a car. They stand there dumbfounded... Rose has taken off. Then they start the whole I'll paint your ass you'll paint mine and then stop laughing... 37 years later the whole ending plays out the way it does in the final cut and when the Eternal Ladies have shattered to bits a veiled figure comes walking down the church steps, she lifts her veil and it's Rose. She is stunning now, she has taken the potion as she just keeps smiling. Mad not acknowledging Rose's improved look throws her the keys of the car and asks her to bring the car around and surprisingly Rose obliges. Then we see Rose throwing the last limbs in the trunk of the car as the women are bickering to eachother. Rose punches the gass and drives off into the sunset, smiling... happy.
@@XanArt21 I LOVE it! Such a dark ending but it's fun because these awful people get their comeuppance. I'm looking at the playbill trying to find the name of the assistant played by Josh Lamon, but they don't attach the name of the actor with the character. So weird. They're all just credited as Ensemble even though there are characters named Luciano and Chagall that sing in some of the musical numbers. They better call their agents!
@@MatthewHardyMusicaloh dear haha!
3:55 I find this a bit of a problem in the movie too... cause originally the film wasn't as camp as it ended up being... It had a bit more of a serious undertone, it was also much longer and the removed ending was a real melancholic gutbunch. The whole third act resolve with Ernest's girlfriend Toni (played by Tracey Ullman) was removed and that's why they had to cut away lots of other parts of the movie to make it all flow/fit better (make it more scrappy I guess). This is the 24 hrs of events missing from the middle of the film: After Ernest gets Madeline home from the morgue he sticks her in the freezer. This happens between Helen jumping over the fence and then she almost gets hit by Ernest's car. Then when Ernest has picked up the formaldehyde he would drive to Helen's hotel to revise their plans and Helen tells him they will have to bury Madeline. Ernest eventually chickens out, tells her he is sorry for everything and goes home. Helen is furious that Ernest puts the 'needs' of a dead Madeline above hers. She rips her hand open again and goes berserk. Then it's morning and the maid Rose finds Madeline in the freezer, with icicles on her forehead. This totally freaks out Rose and she runs to Ernest who reassures her its just an experimental beauty treatment Mad is trying. So Ernest rips Mad from the freezer and she starts to slowly walk around the house looking quite bizarre. She sticks avocado on her face to make it all more believable. Eventually Ernest gets rid of the maid and starts lifting Madeline up the stairs (this is in the theatrical trailer) and when Mad gets upset Ernest promises her he will make her look like 'a masterpiece'. Between Madeline being spraypainted there was also funny scenes with Helen exercising and shopping for the hardware. This is really missed in the final cut and I think the frozen Madeline scene would be quite hilarious for the musical. (I HAVEN'T SEEN IT THOUGH so I don't even know if the maid is in there, Nancy Fish who played her in the film had at least 3 removed scenes). All the dead alive body antics originally where concentrated in the middle of the film and the original ending (27 years later) didn't have much cgi but it was used effectively on Madeline & Helen who are sitting on a balcony and are watching an old Ernest and his wife having a picnic in a park. Then their gorgeous faces turned to skulls as the movie faded out. I heard the Musical's ending is more like the original ending. 6:11 cause she is obsessed with Madeline... this was also a point that got a bit more sidelined in the final cut of the movie. She just couldn't help herself. The scene where Helen talks to Ernest in the Bistro Gardens was much longer and she tells him she put herself away in an assylum and all she could think about was.... and she pauses... she then takes a sneaky look at Madeline... then back at Ernest... and says 'you'.
Thanks for all this insight to the movie. Often problematic movies can be turned into even better musicals if they can use what is unique about musical theater to improve on the material. Hairspray is a musical that I thinks works better than the movie. I think this musical tries to stay too true to the movie so it suffers from the same issues. There is no maid in the musical, but they created a character of Madeline's assistant who functions in the same capacity as the maid. Yes, the musical ends like your description of Madeline and Helen seeing Ernest and his wife - WHO incidentally its played by a chorus person dressed up to look old. I couldn't help but think if that character drank the potion she could believably transform into someone who becomes 40 years younger. Ernest has some final words with Madeline and Helen and exits. Then Madeline and Helen mock Ernest for his choice and they walk off into the sunset instead of falling down the stairs and shattering into pieces. So we don't really get much of a resolution. Helen's obsession with Madeline makes sense and I was aware of it. But something about the way the scene was written and played confused me. I think it was Helen being so sure of herself and then doing a 180 is what felt untruthful to me.
Are the deleted scenes online ?
Sadly not (just snippets from making ofs, trailers tv spots and photos) but they are in the shooting script on David Koepp's page (pink one). I also talked to some people who saw the original cut, they were super confused about the film when they ended up seeing it on VHS, they thought it was some weird mandela effect@@TheTurkaderr
@@MatthewHardyMusical I can't judge it fully of course but I think that Michelle & Jennifer are a bit miscast (if I judge it by the movie roles) to be honest. Goldie had a fragility about her (that got very trimmed down also but it's still there) that I don't see in Jennifer and Isabella had a more sensual feel to her. (And deadly, cause she actually was 600 years old, she tells this to Ernest in a deleted portion when she tries to get him to take the potion and even lets him know she killed Shakespeare, Lincoln and Max Factor cause they refused to take it).
@@XanArt21 LOL She killed Max Factor! That's hilarious. Yes, as I mentioned in my review I think Michelle was a bit out of her depth. Jennifer makes the role her own, but you're right, she's more of a battle axe. I think this is why I was so confused by the scene where she takes Ernest to meet Madeline. She didn't seem like someone who could be destroyed so easily. And she's also 10 years older, so making her look better than Megan at the book signing party was a challenge. They opted to put Megan in a pants suit and Helen in a dress. Because apparently, pants = old. That being said, she is hilarious and I always find her immensely entertaining.
Good review- does it feel like Young Frankenstein the musical?
Thanks! It doesn't have the non stop jokes of a Mel Brooks musical. The tone of Young Frankenstein is much sillier.
great review....yes it is one big splashy "drag" show......might do all right with out-of-town visitors....who like over the top performances, sets...etc......
And I think the gays will like it.
Won't be going to see this with Nicole in the role but I may consider it after she leaves the show.
Starmites! 🛸🚀🔭
I'd forgotten about that show. I've never seen it. Is it good?
I saw the show in DC and felt the same. Like American Idiot the show is short on storyline and character development. Unlike that show there will be no Avett Brothers appearances to save it. I was hoping for these changes before it got to Broadway but it didn’t happen. I love the show, I love the music but I paid $75 a ticket and didn’t mind the lack of depth. Those paying $275 a ticket will want more. IMPT NOTE: Do not buy seats in orchestra rows 1-3 because you won’t see anything but the feet of the performers and the underbelly of the ship.
Thanks for the warning about rows 1-3. I sat in the Mezzanine. I love the mezzanine at the Longacre because it's only 7 rows and every seat is great. The balcony is much larger and has some annoying seats with poles in front of them. Did you read the story of the Mignonette? There was a whole part 2 drama after the men returned to London and were tried for murder.
I've seen the show in DC and LOVED it. Seeing it again in December! I agree with your take but have to mention the set design was impressive to me. I'll also say that more and new Avett music is never a bad idea!
Thanks for the comment. I LOVED all the technical elements - set, lighting, costume, sound. It really is a gorgeous production. And it was great to hear the Avett brothers music.
I am an Avett Brothers superfan and saw the opening night of this show in California before it even got to Broadway. Your critique is very fair and your recommendation of having the brothers write new songs for some of these scenes is sound. I still absolutely love the musical but it could have been that much better had the music been just a little more catered to the story.
Were you familiar with all the songs in the show before you saw it?
Everyone is going to have their own opinion, but I think you just have to be human to enjoy this show. And while it is a very sweet and emotional show it has very comical moments in it as welll. The set is absolutely amazing, like nothing you,'ll see on Broadway. I went with a friend and she thought it was amazing as well, as all the critics have as well. It' a NY Times Critics Pick. I would not sit any closer than 4th row, especially since there are a couple of scenes where the actors are elevated at the front of the stage.
Good suggestion. The set is really cool but you need to be towards the center of the audience to fully enjoy it. I sat in the back of the orchestra, a little bit to the side. I plan to go back and see this show again to give it a second chance. The problem I was having is that I think I was too empathetic towards Oliver's situation. I just felt so terrible for him. Knowing that it all works out in the end, I might be able to watch the show a second time without a feeling of dread.
Thank you! I love the Avett Brother's music and I honestly feel I would have probably had the same reaction, i.e., why didn't they have the brothers write additional songs to have the production feel more cohesive.
Thanks for the comment. I don't know the Avett brothers complete discography so they may have written new songs for the show. But if they did, it sure doesn't feel like it. I get a little frustrated that there aren't more musicals on Broadway that are written by composers who are primarily musical theater composers. Writing for musical theater is a different skill than writing songs for an album.
Check out Alan Mencken’s Weird Romance. All science fiction and great music!
I am familiar with Weird Romance. I've never seen a production but I've heard a few songs. Another example of how hard it is to make a sci fi musical work.
You just perfectly summed up what I was feeling. I saw the show today. I enjoyed it overall but I didn't like it and have no desire to see it again. The only thing I knew was it really needed was more camp. I left confused and felt something was missing but couldn't figure it out. Thank you for interpreting my emotions and helping me figure out what was wrong with the show. Perfectly reviewed!
Thank you! I love comments like this! So glad I could help you sort out your feelings regarding the show.
I love this channel
Thanks! Glad you're enjoying what I'm putting out!
I don't think it's just about AI! It's also about our struggle with the concept pf death, addiction,... It really struck a cord with me
Of course. It's about many things. But the AI part was what makes it so timely. Thanks for the comment!
@MatthewHardyMusical Thank you for your response and your eloquent review!
@@pshakouri Sure thing! 😄
I am so glad I saw this. I am a youth theater director. I have had disagreements about this topic. Someone wants to make a pre-shown playlist and I always ask "Why?" rather than blatantly "no don't!" Next time I will send them your video.
Thanks! I've lately been finding some exceptions to my rule. If you play music that is more ambient and just gives a mood I think it can work. But don't play songs people know! I just saw Elf and they played Christmas music during the walk in which was nice to get us in the holiday spirit BUT I have to say that none of the songs in Elf could hold a candle to the pre-show playlist. I think a smarter choice would have been to play Christmas music in the lobby (it's in a hotel) and then have ambient Christmas sounds in the theater. Jingling bells, voices of elves, winter winds, Santa's ho-ho, perhaps the sound of far away carolers singing a traditional Christmas tune.
@@MatthewHardyMusical Oh! So Elf must be playing at the Marquis? Yes, I agree with the kind of setup you suggest. Honestly, if people are going to a holiday musical, very few songs from any score can stand the clout and resonance an established holiday piece has. I'll have to check out your review of Elf. I find Grey Henson an interesting performer. The show also has a returning to Broadway, Mary Poppins, Ashley Brown. I'm less interested in Sean Astin's (Patty Duke Jr.) Broadway debut, but smart to debut in a show with a limited engagement.
@@chocolatesouljah Yeh, I don't even mention Sean Astin's performance in my review. It's unremarkable. Loved Grey Henson. He's the reason to see it.
@ good to know! The NYT love Mr. Henson but not so much the show “It’s a tonic of a performance - the kind that makes you smile later, just thinking about it. The trouble is that Buddy is trapped inside “Elf the Musical,” a creaky adaptation whose two-and-a-half-hour length seems designed less to maximize audience enjoyment than to ensure there’s an intermission that people can spend buying merch.” Eek! But yay for Gray!
I do not understand the concept of her being covered in blood and a man wearing only his underwear.
Everyone likes a little skin on stage! :-) Joe takes off his clothes because he wearing the expensive suit that Norma bought for him. It's his way of saying he's not going to be a kept man any longer. I think Norma having blood all over herself was a way of making her act of murder visible on her person. I think she kisses Joe after she killed him, just as Salome kissed the severed head of John the Baptist. When she kisses him she gets the blood on her.
It was a fun musical. I think the best part was the little girl sitting in front of me having the time of her life. It was a nice fluff piece.
Yeh the kids will love this. And the adults can enjoy it too. Perfect family show.
Hi Matthew. Sorry you had to shave your facial hair but good luck with the results of the audition. On another note, the musical Elf was based on a move and now Wicked will be a musical movie based on the Broadway show. I would love to hear your thoughts on the movie if you go see it and have you compare it to the stage version. Yes, the movie encompasses only Act One of the stage version with Act Two coming to movie houses in a year, but you would be the perfect person to provide a review of the film and contrast the two versions. I know this is a bit outside the box for what you do on this channel, but possibly you could give it a thought.
Sure! I'll do a bored and confused after I see the movie. I may need to see the Broadway show again. I haven't seen it since it premiered with Idina and Kristin. I remember liking it but having a lot of confusions - like Why was Glinda shorter than the munchkins? LOL
@@MatthewHardyMusical Thanks Matthew...I look forward to the video. By the way, I hope you had a wonderful birthday.
@@MrBBunny-rv1mk Thank you! I did!
I believe the reference to Billy Crystal is a reference to him being in the greatest rom-com of all time, When Harry Met Sally.
Whoosh! Right over my head.
As it happens, I'm very impressed by everything about the writing of the musical ELF, book and songs, But if you are saying you found so many flaws in the storytelling, doesn't that mean you had real issues with the work of the book writers? (P.S. When I was watching your other reviews, it did cross my mind that the facial hair would be perfect for whatever costume you'd use for Santa Claus. And then you shaved off the facial hair right before the ELF reviews!)
Couldn't be helped! I had to shave for an audition. It's hard to know if the book writer, director or the songwriters were to blame. Any or all three of those creative could have worked together to make the moments I took issue with work less confusing. I don't know if I'd call them 'flaws'. They were just moments that pulled me out of the play for a second. But for someone else they may not be an issue at all. That being said, I think the lighthearted tone of the show allows the audience to overlook inconsistencies that would be problematic in a more realistic piece.
Blended well, not blended good. I believed in Santa just from seeing a Santa walk up to the house across the street on Christmas Eve. Of course, I was 7 at the time. But, it’s plausible to me that I would believe in Santa flying in his sleigh in New York. I loved your enthusiastic review. It makes me want to go see it. If only I was in New York.
Do you still believe in Santa?

I'm sure you can see a production near you. It's licensed all over. Thanks for your comment and grammatical correction! 🙂
This review perfectly sums up my thoughts/feelings after seeing the show in DC. I really thought they’d have to fix this core issue before it opened on Broadway, but I guess they didn’t do enough.
I'm really curious how involved the Avett Brothers were in this production, Were they involved in the creative process?
@MatthewHardyMusical They were involved bc they wrote Lord Lay Your Hand On My Shoulder for Swept Away. I had similar thoughts about wishing the lyrics to other songs had been adapted to better fit the storyline when I saw in DC. I was baffled to be honest that with all the talent and creativity from the creators on the stage side that they took the songs as they were with no changes. One thing that really got me was the song May It Last that the Captain sings was only given one verse and chorus or something when the whole song should have been a centerpiece for him and drawn out bc it's literally about a Captain on the seas and has big sweeping strings and sea vibes, even in the original album version. I'm a literal paid member of the Avett Bros fan club, and it's hard for other die-hard fans to see this show is thin in a lot of ways. All that said, I will be seeing it again on Broadway in a couple weeks! Lol We've also got tickets to see Allison Russell in her new role as Persephone in Hadestown and splurged on stage-side seats for Cabaret. I'll squeeze in another show if I can! ❤
@@norwoodt Thanks for the info! I don't remember where that new song was in the show. The playbill doesn't help because the songs are listed in alphabetical order. I recall the captain having a pretty substantial ballad in the middle of the show. Maybe they gave him more of that song to sing. It's hard for me to remember the songs because they weren't always tied dramatically to the action. And I saw the show twice!
Happy Birthday!! You shaved. I love your pajamas. Happy Holidays.
Thanks! Yes, I had to shave for an audition. My chin is cold. Happy Holidays to you too!
It's not going to last
Thoughts and Prayers
I just saw it tonight. The acting and singing were good..show was just slow and boring
Thanks for the comment. Hard to make 40 minutes in a lifeboat exciting.
love your review!
thank you! I had so much to say that I had a hard time editing it down to 10 minutes
Super interesting review! I personally adore this show, it’s curious some of the changes they made in the transfer, having seen it in Dc and on broadway. They changed some song lyrics and lines, mostly good but a few changes puzzled me (because it seemed like the moment you’re given an inkling of character motivation for the captain was taken away), idk. Personally I like that because if its length SWAW doesn’t spoon feed a lot of the character motivation to the audience but looking back on it as after seeing the whole story every single choice and interaction the characters made makes perfect sense and makes the whole thing even more tragic. Def not for everyone. 👀😂
Glad you enjoyed it! I find it interesting that they changed lyrics. I wonder if the lyricist changed them or the book writer. I think they should have changed more!
Too many songs, not a lot of character development. I was bored to death.
If only the songs had developed the characters!
@@MatthewHardyMusical perhaps the biggest downfall of a jukebox musical.
@@germantownmd76 Are there any jukebox musicals where the songs actually develop character?
Easily one of the best shows I've seen all year. I hope the box office numbers go up, so it can stick around for a while. I really want it to be remembered in June at the Tonys.
I really enjoyed this play being an Asian American who immigrated in the States two decades ago. Interesting to hear the point of view of a playwright.
Thanks for your comment. I just learned that they are going to air the show on PBS. I look forward to being able to see it again on TV!
@@MatthewHardyMusical Nice! Thanks for letting me know.
I really appreciate your reviews and can verify you give spot on assessments as I have watched your video reviews and the shows for Water for Elephants, Hells Kitchen, Gatsby, Home, Back to the Future, and The Outsiders. We are trying to win tickets to Swept Away for tomorrow and am crossing fingers.
Thank you! Love reading comments like this. Good luck on Swept Away tickets. And let me know if you see Maybe Happy Ending. I seem to be the odd man out on that review.
will you be seeing DRAG: the musical ?
I saw it! I haven't posted the review yet because there are too many Broadway shows opening this week. I'll post it after Death Becomes Her opens next week.
not a show I want to see, but love your videos
