I feel like it really comes down to work life balance. Those big companies just dont offer that. Yes you'll make less money at a smaller company but you can Still make good money and be happy

IF you think about it, the SWE guys are never the heroes that successfully implemented the products. But the people who came up with the software or people who sold it to a big company.

I work at arm in the UK, doing basically software engineering. My experience is very different to this. I’m not sure if it’s just USA vs. UK, or if it is specific to arm, but I feel likely my company is mostly driven by engineering. We don’t have products that are on the internet as production servers, so we don’t have anything like “on call”, so I can do my work whenever is best suited to me.

"... the problem that has already been solved by business people" omg which company are you working for? A problem that is completely solved by business instead of half assed user story that has obvious logical holes after the start of the implementation? Goddamn. Must be a dream.

Almost up to 10 years of experience now, the part about being the entire company's b is so common. You don't realize it until you get out of the deadline anxiety for a bit and reflect.

After getting laid off so many times, but still wanting to be a dev, I might just start my own business, and have multiple products like a discount tech bootcamp, and software consulting services. Would love to hear from anyone who has gone down a similar route :)

I took an unusual route into software engineering, starting out as a sound and light tech in the entertainment industry. Long hours, brutal conditions, terrible pay-that was the norm. Now I find myself surrounded by SWE folks complaining about the 'challenges' of working remotely from their comfy homes, fully stocked offices, and air-conditioned spaces. It's almost laughable. The amount of whining I hear from people who’ve never worked a real grind is unreal. The truth is, most SWE's have it incredibly easy compared to industries where physical labor and actual adversity are a daily grind. Don’t even get me started on the endless virtue signaling about 'DEI' initiatives-most of it feels performative at best. Honestly, they’d crumble if they ever had to do a job that required real grit. The disconnect is insane. At the end of the day, let’s face it: most software engineers are just bitches.

I like fixing stuff like cars and code, self manage a bunch of real estate too on top of the senior SWE job for financing benefits. Software engineering is awesome this guy ain't a good fit and got a bad job for high pay. My life's great I'm a multimillionaire, my friend and girlfriend live with me too. So my life is the exact opposite of this guy's experience. Sorry buddy shoulda stayed true to yourself not your parents.

I just want to say. A job doesn't have to define you. You can talk to people, fuck bitches and do things you like doing, in your free time. After all, jobs are just problem solving, physical or digital, slow or fast paced, social or not, generalist or specialist, I believe we all like (and need) problemsolving. Solving things is rewarding, it makes us feel valuable and gives purpose. However, we live in a world where the only reward we are given is money, which isn't very personal or special. It is easy to feel used, disrespected or unvalued by other people nowadays, when the only reward we get from our work is money. Maybe you want a job where you are closer to the client and can see the value you bring to others for yourself. We all have different skills and areas of interest. One mans job can be another mans hobby, and vice-versa. That is not to say, that some businesses don't treat their workers with respect, and that is not a place you want to be in. So if you like the work you do, find a job that will value the work you do.

Gosh, you struck one point that has been my constant nightmare over the recent years - my social skills are so degraded from this job, that I fail at simple day to day interactions with other people. Being in a dark room for the most part of the day and attempting to fix crappy code, makes me wish I worked at other field. I thought of changing the field, but I realise this is the one thing I am decent at and there's no way I am getting this salary at other job, assuming how poor my social skills are.

Sounds like you just didn’t have a social life to begin with. You made the job your life and didn’t have any balance or hobbies outside of work. If you didn’t speak a word in a week, get some friends or go do a sport, live life outside of work and maybe you wouldn’t have been so miserable lmao. And it’s clear you have some deep seated resentment towards your family for pushing you towards that path
