Buenas noches, tengo uno igual y me gustaría ponerle la placa de subtonos, dónde la puedo conseguir? Gracias por el vídeo me interesa mucho, saludos cordiales.
Do you know how to adjust the mic input on this handheld? I get complaints of low audio when I use mine on local repeaters.
Hi do you take on repairs of these radios.
Are you selling these boards ? Regards Tom
Hi are these boards still available? I would like to use my Ft290r2 more often and this would be a good option!
Hi Charlie, yes they are. Cheers Paul
@@G8WAL That's great! Can i have your e-mail address so i can contact you please?
No problem Charlie. paul.pyetelecom@gmail.com
Paul has come up with a superb idea that brings the older radios bang up to date, just looks like the old radio from the outside but works the repeaters again, great communication with paul, very helpful ,the famous ft 290r has had a new life given to it rather that sat in the box, it is out portable again, i highly recommend this board ,first class brilliant idea Paul
May I ask where you obtain the FNB-2 batteries from, for the FT-208/708/207 please? 73, Ian G1DRP
Hello Ian, it is difficult to obtain the old nicad packs so I use lithium ion cells ( modified radio) nowadays. Also performance is so much better. I plan on uploading many more videos soon, one of which will detail the modification made to an FT 207R. Cheers Paul
Paul Taylor Hi Paul, I did consider using three Lion cells myself. I’m quite partial to the older Yaesu hand helds. Cheers, Ian
Hello, yes the boards are still available. Best wishes Paul
Paul hello ! , do you still make these boards ? - I have an Tr-9130 73´s de LA6REA
Hello where I can buy this board. Thanks!
Only half the story! In order to operate correctly with UK repeaters, the FM deviation needs to be reduced. It can be done but is quite an involved process, ideally requiring a deviation meter. Apart from that an outstanding tutorial and piece of kit!
Paul has made the installation of these little tone encoders very simple, I have installed 3 all worked first time, and have now made the FT290 usable again. An excellent guide Thank Paul John mi0dfg
where can I buy one of these boards ?
hola es fascinante ver todos esos modelos de yaesu me recuerda mi adolescencia soy HJ4OUN y sobre todo el 203 lo disfrute mucho gracias por recordarme los buenos tiempos.
First rate mod. Paul at pyetelecom really help full. If you have not done the Mod. well worth doing.
They are the Pye PF1 Tx / Rx (Centre), PF9 Tx / Rx (Right) , PF8 (back left) & Burndepts BE470 (blue) BE600 (black). These radios were the early commercial UHF handsets used by the Police, Fire & Home Office (among others) dating back to 1964 (PF1)
what are those really old radio's behind the FT-8900
are you still making these?
Hello I have a Icom 251a....will this work in my unit?
Yes Jamie, I designed the board to work in any radio. My intention was to be able to design a board with a method of operation which would allow complete control of desired tone frequency without having (where possible) to add additional controls (buttons, switches etc) to the original radio. A good example of this can be found on the fitting to the Yaesu FT209. In this case, either the tone burst or lamp buttons on the radio could also be used as the tone select button. The selected tone frequency is then indicated audibly via the speaker (and or either by an led mounted behind the S meter). Another good example is the fitting to the old Pye PF8, where the squelch defeat button double up as tone select with audible indication using the bottom mic.
Hello, the video is good and very sharp. I have seen in the beginning the vhf preamp in the device. But later he was no longer in the machine. Why? I'm looking for a circuit diagram for this preamp. Can you help me. Please contact: santalucia@gmx.de Thank you 73 heinz
I spy a ft-727r, do you have the fts-6 module fitted? mine is a euro model B and I'm trying to fit cross to it, any suggestions? I've swapped the r32 & 35 links for 33 & 34 to supposedly make it model A, got tone but it still won't open squelch on another radio
Many thanks, yes they are still available and they are built to order (time permitting).
Excellent Guide.
Excellent. Are you still producing these? If so could you please email me at: dragonflare@sky.com. Regards and 73 Allan G1JXI
do you have a Web business link G8wal

For anyone considering buying this item, my previous post was unfair. The encoder is a good design and I was asking Paul for a customised version. There's no issue with payment either.
A tip to following this excellent video guide, pause video at key points, "print screen" & copy to e.g. a word processor, after which print the selected pictures & use as a guide during installation. I have also installed this CTCSS board in a Yaesu FT790 (70cm) transceiver. Signal node names differ on the 790. Connect yellow wire to P05/J06 pin 5 on main board, green wire to P09/J04 pin 4 on the vertical AF board (adjacent to battery bay) & blue wire to pin 1 of same connector. (original wire from P09/1 needs to be cut & the extra diode has to be connected as per the 290 video. To avoid cutting AF PCB track wire diode between CTCSS blue wire & P09/1. The CTCSS orange wire can be connected to R01 (820 ohm) L.H. side looking from front top of radio on keyboard PCB, which is a TX6.8V node. Remaining connections +ve & gad. same as 290 nodes.
Just purchased one of these boards of Paul G8WAL 26/05/15 and what a fantastic bit of kit they are. They are professionally built and certainly do what he says.If your 790e is lacking the encoder board like mine was then look no further and get yourself one of these little gems...
Hi there I have one of these I bought in 1983, haven't used it much recently, when I did put it on the S meter stayed right up with no incoming signal for about 8 hours, slowly drifted down to zero. any idea why that might be...from Fred g4vvq Nr Chelmsford Ex
Hi Fred, did you ever sort this out? There's info on the web. Search for electric handbag group and you'll find the repair details and lots of other gen for this radio.
A great video I am getting mine tomorrow 19/06/14. For my Sommerkamp FT290R, exactly the same as the Yaesu FT290R. Mike.
Very interesting video, I have sent an email about this to you Paul.
I have the same radio but under the name of Sommerkamp, a great radio but will need one of those boards, will see what eBay has to offer. Thanks for the nice clear video. Mike.
HI PAUL,AND TO PEOPLE WATCHING THIS U-TUBE CLIP,I AM A OWNER OF A KENWOOD TS790E AND HAVE FITTED ONE OF PAULS CTCSS BOARDS AND CAN ONLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND THE FITTING OF ONE. AS YOU CAN SEE VERY CLEAR, AND A STEP BY STEP VIDEO OF HOW TO FIT SAID BOARD. AND ALSO AS PAUL EXPLAINS VERY EASY TO SET UP AND CHANGE FROM ONE TONE TO ANOTHER, WHICH BRING THIS RADIO UP TO DATE FOR USE WITH CTCSS ACCESSED REPEATERS OF TODAY. MANY THANKS PAUL" GREAT PIECE OF KIT."......
Can't find any on ebay are they still available?
Hi do you have this ctcss encoder for sale ?
Hi. The boards are currently being professionally manufactured and should be available within the next two to three weeks.

Hello Paul Thank you very much in adding CTCSS to my ADI AR446 70cm rig. I am very please with the unit. I would recommend anyone thinking about adding a CTCSS board to an older rig , to use A G8WAL CTCSS board. Many thanks Andy G6OHM
Hi Paul, finally got to leave this note. My TW-4000A has been given a new lease of life by the 1B you fitted and I cannot thank you enough for all you help and time. Anyone who wants older radio's brought up to the modern day repeater spec could benefit with you little device. Top marks my old son. Very best 73 John de G6SIM QTHR
Paul, great guide to aid the Yaesu FT-290r customer and Rod will enjoy going mobile again but this time he can use his trusty FT-290r aided with your ctcss board. By the way nice clean install and the board being so small just tucks away between those PCB boards. M6SST
Hello, for anyone considering this item I thought I would post my comments. I recently purchased this item from Paul, G8WAL, for my Kenwood TS790E. It is an amazing piece of kit, especially for a radio of this age as it only had the original 1750hz tone option fitted. Paul professionally fitted the unit for me and I would have no hesitation in recommending the unit (or Paul). Purchase with complete confidence. I have no affiliation other than to be a very satisfied customer. Mark - G0TOV QTHR.
Hi Paul, it would be fitted into a yeasu FT726R 73 de G7VHJ

Hi Jeffrey. Item listed on Ebay. Search PBCT1A/B CTCSS Encoder. Regards. Paul
where can you get this add on board .. jeff .. m0prf ..
Hi Mark. These boards are presently tone encoders. I am working on a firmware update which will allow them in the future to be used as decoders also. This will require a further two wires to be connected to the board and therefore to the radio itself. As most operators will only require encoder operation for repeater access I have decided to launch this as a standalone version.
hi paul, Just a quick question are the boards purely ctcss tone generators? or do they disable the squelch from opening until the correct tone is received? or can they be set to full ctcss TX/RX or just TX only? Great project, cheers Mark
Boards are now available on ebay. Listing No. 300907348080
M6SST Great bit of kit Paul and a very interesting video, very well put across. Cannot wait to get it fitted to the FT290r. Steve M6SST
Cool! MB7IFH is a link rather than a repeater - he only runs 1 Watt ERP from a dipole, amazed you can hear it Paul! Good video, well done! Cheers, Matt G4RKY
