    If I managed to get an alexandrite stone to set into the silver clay would it get damaged in the baking process? And could i as someone with no jewelry making tools or experience make a ring for my girlfriend with those materials? I find making things myself to be important, especially when gifting something like jewelry to a person. If i were to make it myself what could i get to help me make her the ring of her dreams as an ordinary person without professional tools?

      Just do it! Buy plenty of silver clay so you can have a few attempts. Spend £100 on clay and £50 on tools and you can make something great!

    I usually wait 3-4 days before firing anything. Setting the kiln to an 04 bisque with a 12 hour warm up works well for me. This makes the firing take about three days. Slow is always best with pottery. There is definitely a learning curve, so be patient with yourself while you figure things out. Good luck!

    the moisture trapped in the pots caused them to explode. as water turns from a liquid to a gas due to heat, the molecules expand, which ends up as an explosion (or many many explosions). learning the basic physics and chemistry of clay and ceramics saves a lot of heartache and time in the end!!

    Look for a particulate filter mask or a respirator for the cleanup of any dried clay or exploded bisque :D I second rynnieroo that this was most likely from moisture still in the pots and a long warm up works great but if you have a firing going already I throw any super thick bottom pots that appear bone dry on top of the kiln that’s heated to 100% make sure it’s dry I work in a studio for beginners and it saves soooo many thicker walled hand built or thrown pieces to either do that or the ramps at a lower temp per hour

    • @funkyfunyou8571
      @funkyfunyou8571 2 месяца назад

      Thanks for the great advice! I'll definitely look into getting a filter mask or respirator for the cleanup. Love the tips about using the top of an already heated kiln for those thicker pots!!

    The pieces probably had some moisture still in them, which is why they exploded. When loading pieces into a kiln, make sure they aren't cold to the touch. You can also do a super long warm-up on the kiln to zap all the moisture out of the pieces.

    • @obaileyo
      @obaileyo 2 месяца назад

      ^ totally! a preheat to your firing will help draw out the moisture that caused these pieces to explode. just make sure to keep the lid cracked open or peeps out (while preheating only) to lessen the damage the moisture will do to the elements in the kiln.

    • @funkyfunyou8571

    hey, I don't know if you''re going to see this, but I am wondering if I could use this technique to make a pendant cap around a crystal/gemstone or would the shrinkage of the clay when firing damage/break the gemstone? Thanks!

    • @funkyfunyou8571
      @funkyfunyou8571 3 месяца назад

      It really depends on the type of stone you use. Most hard stones can handle the firing process without breaking, but if they aren’t covered sufficiently by the clay, they might pop out of their setting. But just many stones can't stand high temperatures-often, their color darkens. You should definitely check with the stone suppliers and consider doing some tests yourself :)

    You should at least use a file to clean it up, i get you don't have the skill for correct stone setting (that's actually really hard) but that looks terrible. I wouldn't use silver for this level of crafting skill

    • @funkyfunyou8571
      @funkyfunyou8571 3 месяца назад

      I understand where you're coming from. Silver clay certainly has its limitations and might not meet the standards of every skilled crafter, especially for traditional techniques like stone setting. However, I think it's a fantastic material for home DIY projects. It allows people to experiment and create with less pressure, which is more about creating and having fun.

    • @funkyfunyou8571

      I don't think an electric stove would work for this, as it doesn't provide the same direct heat as a gas stove or grill. A better alternative would be to use a torch gun, which can provide the direct, intense heat needed for firing.

      Gold clay is indeed quite expensive, so if you're looking for a more budget-friendly alternative, yes, you could try using bronze clay. Alternatively, you can create your piece with silver and then send it to a local jeweller for gold plating.
