    How do you know what gems can withstand the heat? Is there a specific video or phrase to research when considering a stone for the piece?

    • @funkyfunyou8571
      @funkyfunyou8571 18 дней назад

      My method is a bit old-school-I just bought a bunch and did a lot of testing! There are only a few types of gems that are heat-resistant. For instance, spinel can generally withstand high temperatures. For Cubic Zirconia (CZ) stones, only specific colors are heat-resistant.

    • @funkyfunyou8571
      @funkyfunyou8571 Месяц назад

      Thanks for the kind words! Yeah, figuring out which stones can handle the heat involved a lot of testing-and yes, a bit of trial and error (and money) along the way 😂. The stones included in the kit are all heat-resistant for sure.

    Do you wear a mask when smoothing the ring down? I’ve seen some people say it’s unsafe to breathe in the particles

    • @funkyfunyou8571
      @funkyfunyou8571 2 месяца назад

      Absolutely, wearing a mask is crucial when sanding or smoothing down the ring due to the fine particles. Sometimes I get lazy, but it's definitely a safety step I shouldn't skip!!

    1:06 in my (humble) experience- putting hand cream on, especially oil based, could potentially contaminate your silver and affect the final piece’s porosity. This is just my understanding and I could 100% be wrong… Love the video 😊❤️‍🔥

    • @funkyfunyou8571

      Yes, you can definitely use a hairdryer to dry the ring, and use a gas stove for firing. Just ensure the clay is thoroughly dried to prevent any cracking or damage during the firing process :)

    Why do you use sandpaper to polish before and after firing

    • @funkyfunyou8571
      @funkyfunyou8571 5 месяцев назад

      Sanding before and after firing just makes the piece smoother and shinier. Doing it before cuts down on how much you need to sand after it’s fired up.

    Hello from the UK, if like in your video the clay breaks, is that it for the clay or can it be reused in anyway?

    • @funkyfunyou8571
      @funkyfunyou8571 5 месяцев назад

      Hi! Great question! If the clay breaks after firing, unfortunately, it can't be reused for firing again. However, you can definitely recycle the silver material by melting it down and reforming it if you have the right tools and skills. If it breaks before firing, you can just re-wet it, knead it back to a workable consistency, and start over. Hope that helps!

    • @funkyfunyou8571
      @funkyfunyou8571 5 месяцев назад

      I'm putting together a detailed video to guide you through the entire heating process. I typically use a stove that can reach high temperatures, suitable for firing silver clay. For stones, I stick with heat-resistant CZ stones to ensure they can withstand the process without damage.

    If I managed to get an alexandrite stone to set into the silver clay would it get damaged in the baking process? And could i as someone with no jewelry making tools or experience make a ring for my girlfriend with those materials? I find making things myself to be important, especially when gifting something like jewelry to a person. If i were to make it myself what could i get to help me make her the ring of her dreams as an ordinary person without professional tools?

    • @jackhinchy9359
      @jackhinchy9359 5 месяцев назад

      Just do it! Buy plenty of silver clay so you can have a few attempts. Spend £100 on clay and £50 on tools and you can make something great!

    • @funkyfunyou8571
      @funkyfunyou8571 5 месяцев назад

      Love that you want to DIY a ring for your girlfriend-that’s super thoughtful! About the alexandrite, these stones can be tricky with heat, so it’s best not to bake it in the silver clay. You can totally make a ring without fancy tools, though! Just shape the ring, fire it up (a kitchen torch will do if you don’t have a kiln), and set the stone afterward to avoid any damage.

    I usually wait 3-4 days before firing anything. Setting the kiln to an 04 bisque with a 12 hour warm up works well for me. This makes the firing take about three days. Slow is always best with pottery. There is definitely a learning curve, so be patient with yourself while you figure things out. Good luck!

    • @funkyfunyou8571
      @funkyfunyou8571 7 месяцев назад

    the moisture trapped in the pots caused them to explode. as water turns from a liquid to a gas due to heat, the molecules expand, which ends up as an explosion (or many many explosions). learning the basic physics and chemistry of clay and ceramics saves a lot of heartache and time in the end!!

    • @funkyfunyou8571

    Look for a particulate filter mask or a respirator for the cleanup of any dried clay or exploded bisque :D I second rynnieroo that this was most likely from moisture still in the pots and a long warm up works great but if you have a firing going already I throw any super thick bottom pots that appear bone dry on top of the kiln that’s heated to 100% make sure it’s dry I work in a studio for beginners and it saves soooo many thicker walled hand built or thrown pieces to either do that or the ramps at a lower temp per hour

    • @funkyfunyou8571
      @funkyfunyou8571 7 месяцев назад

      Thanks for the great advice! I'll definitely look into getting a filter mask or respirator for the cleanup. Love the tips about using the top of an already heated kiln for those thicker pots!!

    The pieces probably had some moisture still in them, which is why they exploded. When loading pieces into a kiln, make sure they aren't cold to the touch. You can also do a super long warm-up on the kiln to zap all the moisture out of the pieces.

    • @obaileyo
      @obaileyo 7 месяцев назад

      ^ totally! a preheat to your firing will help draw out the moisture that caused these pieces to explode. just make sure to keep the lid cracked open or peeps out (while preheating only) to lessen the damage the moisture will do to the elements in the kiln.

    • @funkyfunyou8571
      @funkyfunyou8571 7 месяцев назад
