It's not just all of the safety risks, it's also that running IndyCars on a 2.5 mile high banked oval would be BORING AS HELL to watch. It would just be foot to the floor the whole time and hope that the rookies don't do anything stupid and kill a bunch of people. It just wouldn't make for an entertaining race. IMS is different. It's pretty flat and the corners are more pronounced. It actually requires skill. Running Daytona in a spec IndyCar would just require balls and a death wish. And it wouldn't make for a good visual to put 10-20k fans (IF THAT) in a grandstand that holds 120k+. It would look like they were running a test session.

The real reason guys, and I was there for the testing back about 8 years ago is the transition in the banking of the turns is two abrupt for the front spoiler. car will dig right in. The speeds were handled by mandating downforce.

I believe the turn radius is much bigger is a key, combined with the banked turns. This means Indy Cars would be doing laps approaching maybe 240mph. Not one single car's top speed, I mean a cluster of cars. Combine this with a steady, almost constant G-force where drivers if not black-out, at least "gray-out" and have a hard time focusing, means there would likely be many more crashes, and they would be horrifying. Think: Gordon Smiley, Dan Wheldon level of crashes. Or a crash where wheels catch, someone goes airborne, and into the catch fence with dozens of spectators sitting behind that fence.

When I was in college, our precision engineering department got two silicon graphics, 64 bit computers. These are the “Terminators” as they were used in the movies. One of the programs was a box you dropped and when it hit a surface, it moved with real physics. Each one cost $80,000.

They probably don’t have tires that can handle the g-forces generated on the turns if you think about the logistics of actually running it. Talking sustained 5-6gs onto the tires in one direction over and over. They would blow after a few corners and whoever is in the car would be done for.

No, Indycar doesn’t race at Daytona because the ownership at nascar wouldn’t let that happen over their dead bodies.

I think the reason is the cars & the engineering behind them not safety. You could build the fences stronger or armor the driver even more to make them safer. But if you to take an f1 car even without any rule book try to turn it into a machine that can handle 500 laps of near nonstop redline with 2000 ultra high bank turns while occasionally clipping mirrors with other cars doing the same you’re gonna end up with something that looks an awful lot like a stock car.

The crash isn't any worse than some of the crashes at indy.

I live in Indiana, I got a pit pass one time and had a chance to talk to the drivers. One of them told me, the track at Indy is designed for the fastest race cars on the planet. He said, when your car is set up correctly you simply hold the gas pedal to the floor and steer. He said, it's the most exhilarating white knuckle drives there is.

There was a time when NASCAR was seeing 200mph. Full STOCK body cars, 400 plus cubic inch motors. Crashes were frightening. No one wanted see a driver die.
