    the piece shown at 0:47 looks like idocrase. the pendent with the milky green looks like nephrite.

    • @applegateoutdoorsadventures
      @applegateoutdoorsadventures 22 дня назад

      No in depth XRD testing has been done. It is possible that idocrase and nephrite can be found but so far none of the rocks I have tested for specific gravity and hardness have indicated such. Semi nephrite and idocrase inclusions are possible but without more expensive testing I should not claim it is real jade according to western standards because the results I get align exact with bowenite. Some have been very close to nephrite but all have fallen short of justifying the expense of sending to Attards for XRD testing. None of the tests even came close to idocrase or rodingites although I have found those mixed with pumpellyite a few miles to the south in the Klamath drainage around Seiad and Happy Camp. I have tested all the rocks I worked into cabochons or toki pendants. It has been the consensus of the experts in the jade groups I subscribe to as well as the local geologists that what I am finding is bowenite or gem grade antigorite. There is also Willamsite in the area but I have not found any that match it's numbers. I believe that what I am finding is every bit as valuable as most nephrites and sometimes more depending on grade. I have seen knives made from the best grade local bowenite sell for as much as $2000 and New Zealand paunamu bowenite pendants go for $600. I sell mine for much less. Back in the 1800's before the advent of modern testing and standards, Chinese miners used to send large quantities of the Applegate material back to China and sell it to jade masters as jade. Because it will easily take a mirror fine polish, I actually prefer working with the Applegate material to most real jades I have purchased with the exception of some of Jade West Matt's best Dease Lake material and Yukon polar jade which along with Guatemala blue jadeite is by far my favorite to work with.

    • @applegateoutdoorsadventures
      @applegateoutdoorsadventures 6 месяцев назад

      If I knew of a market for rough bowenite boulders I would be rich. Your best bet is to make jewelry or carvings. I usually leave the bigger ones where found unless it has an interesting enough shape for a yard rock or suiseki stone because I don't have access to a saw that can fit them. After working the stone into jewelry or rough slabs you might have some luck on ebay. For the area your rock was found the Crater Rock Museum is a good place to learn about making and selling jewelry or art. Join the gem club and take classes to use their workshop. Then you can rent a booth at their rock shows. Tell them Phill sent you. Good luck and thank you for watching.

      No worries. It is not legally considered trespassing in Oregon unless there was proper signage posted or the owner told you to leave and you refused. This was not the case here. See Oregon Revised Statutes 105.700 for a definition of proper signage. That being said, I will be sure to not go anywhere near there during the growing season, not hop any fences and respect all posted signs that I see whether they are proper or not. Things are pretty scary for the people in Cave Junction right now. Many are worried about getting trapped in traffic while evacuating like some stories we are hearing in the recent news. It does seem that fires are managed for profit more like our dysfunctional health care system "in this day and age". We never used to get the big fires before they closed the smoke jumper base, decommissioned logging roads and put gates up everywhere to save the environment. I remember when local volunteer crews used to do a better job nipping the fires in the bud but that is no longer allowed.
