If you're sitting at a table with an electric guitar, an amp modeler, and headphones, at a Starbucks... You're still a psycho. Seriously. No one does that. Stop. ;) Great video and an interesting perspective.
Well putting an HX Stomp (645€) and HX Effects (599€) together that way isn't sparing any money at all. The Helix Floor is selling now for 1249€ (same price as the combo) and the Helix LT for 899€. The prices just fall by 200€ in September 2024. However HX Stomp and HX Effects prices are still the same and even rising for last four years. In 2020 an HX Stomp was sold around 549€. Using HX-Stomp/HX Effects approach has following drawbacks : - You still don't have an expression pedal included - 4 Cable Method needed - Powering with 9DC/2A needed for the Stomp, don't know how much the HX effects needs. In a Helix LT/Floor you just plug in AC - Live editing mode not available for quick adjustments. On Helix Floor/LT just go into editing mode, select parameter to be adjusted and adjust it with the EXP-Pedal.
I cant seem to find it on the HX effects, is there a way to spill over effects, moving from a accoustic patch to a distortion creates a break and flow of the song. Ive googled the daylights out of this and all keep referring to the Helix HX but not the HX effects. Any help would be great...
Don't transition from one preset to the other. Make a single preset and transition from one sound to the other using snapshots. If you're using Reverb or delay, make sure trails are on... are you using an acoustic guitar or an electric guitar?
@@BillySoundFarm it's an electric guitar, but acoustic and distortion patches. I was reading about snapshots and creating a 2nd one with trails on.
"DI" has nothing to do with USB or recording. It means the main output is balanced and ready to be plugged straight into a microphone preamp without a DI box. You need a 1/4 to XLR adapter or pigtail cable do to that, but that is how it is meant to work. Dave Friedman himself told me that the output is designed to go straight to mic preamp (as opposed to a line-in or a hi-z input)
Dave Friedman is a nice guy, so I don't think he's trying to intentionally mislead anyone. But I think to a normal person, when you call a product a 'DI', they're going to think that it actually is the 'DI Box'.
@@BillySoundFarm It effectively is the DI box, because the output of the device itself is a) balanced and b) "mic" level . Thats what a DI box does, convert unbalanced instrument signals to balanced, mic level signals so they can a) run long distances without noise b) be amplified by a mic preamp. -- Nothing about the definition of "DI" box has to do with USB or digital recording.
Bypassing the IR with the footswitch does not bypass the poweramp simulation. The poweramp sounds better with the new firmware update I think (could be placebo)
Are you sure the bypass doesn't apply to the power amp Sim? ... the literature made it seem that using the bypass would do the same thing as taking your signal from the send of the effects Loop. Thanks for pointing that out if it's true.
Your funny...but also very right.
I use my HX Stomp for 6 years extensively. I`m a little fed up with fiddeling menues on stage.... Ususaly just a simple Fender amp and a little reverb+slapback delay. Would you recomend me to get a Drem 65?
Yeah you'll probably like it
Nice!. Love your playing and thanks for sharing. Peace!
Thanks for the encouragement!
Then put it down and move along scooter.
What is your obsession of using fart as a reference?
It's just what it sounded like
I also own the Kemper Profiler Head and the HX Stomp. My advice to you would be the following. I see that you have two Strats hanging on the wall. Sell the Squier, keep the PRS. Sell the HX Effects and sell the HX Stomp. Instead, buy either the Line 6 Helix or a Neural DSP Quad Cortex. Also, consider selling all of the tube and solid state amps that you have on the video, and instead purchase a Fender amp such as the Deluxe Reverb. This way you will have a professional profiler (Kemper), modeler (Helix or Quad), and a tube amp (Fender Deluxe). These three will cover most of the necessary studio and live needs for a long time, and in the end it will save you more money. I am also about to sell my HX Stomp and a bunch of other gear and get either the Helix or the Quad Cortex. I think I’ll be getting the Quad Cortex as it seems more future proof for the next while and its smaller size than Helix.
If I wanted to run a helix I would just keep the HX effects and run it together with the stomp. Those two units together are better than the helix, I actually made a video about it: ruclips.net/video/aL-p3J3U75Y/видео.html
You're a great explainer. Thank you
Thanks!
Credit to Jam Tayo @CrisostomoIbarra1989 ...I used his video as a starting point for a lot of the guitar parts, you can check it out here but it's not in English: ruclips.net/video/vPJNY-E5N6o/видео.html
👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I bought the Tonemaster Pro, the Fender Models are superior, and i have the inspiring moments every evening, together with all the effects i want and could think of
Guitar Center and community!? Nope. GC destroyed the guitar community in my area by undercutting the independent dealers. It will be a good thing when it’s gone
The guitar community needs to save independent dealers. Guitar Center made its mission to destroy mom and pop stores and it needs payback.
I also would like to local guitar shops in business, but there are none besides Guitar Center where I live (and it's not Guitar Center's fault because we didn't have one before either)
I’m sorry, but that combo is only $100 cheaper
Can you do a review with the firmware update that just came out?
Yeah I think I should. I didn't even know about that, thanks for the heads up!
I had some what the same problem with the IRX and I think it comes down to the power amp simulator ! I gives it a kind of stiffness with very little compression ! I tried to love it but couldn’t !
That's a great perspective on realistic modelling, thank you for your thoughts! The urge to get to a finished song with good tools and the joy of not having to fiddle around too much... It all comes down to which musical choices are the right one for you - with the implied compromises you care less about.
Hey Billy! Love the video. I have purchased one of the Friedman IRX"S too. You mentioned something about the valvetronic amp from Vox and had a video about getting a better tone out of it. I would love to get a secret to unlock a better tone. Thanks so much and keep rockin!!
Hi Charles, Thanks for the encouragement! I'll put the VT30 mod video in the que, but in the meantime here's the secret: ..Change the speaker. Use a 16ohm speaker. The stock speaker is 4ohms, so if you use a 16 ohm speaker it will force that 12ax7 in the output section to work 4x harder, which means more of the perceived tone will be coming from the tube relative to how much of it's coming from the algorithm in the DSP preamp section. Also, make the speaker something with moderate to low clean headroom, because a little speaker breakup will also make the tone seem more authentic and less like it's coming from the computer. ..I discovered this by accident. My speaker went bad, and I happened to buy a new speaker for a different amp but I hadn't installed it yet. It was a 10" Gamma TrueBlue from Guitar Center. I wanted to try it because it's only $40 and no one was talking about it (that video is coming, the speaker is pretty great). I was curious to try it in the Vox amp because it's obviously branded as something like a Celestion Blue, which are the best speakers for AC15's/AC30's. It was the wrong ohms but I tried it anyway after verifying it wouldn't hurt anything. The amp was sooooo much better with that 16ohm Gamma TrueBlue. But I did lose a ton of volume. If you need the thing to be loud enough for gigging then this won't be a good solution for you unless you mic the amp. ..But it actually got better than that. I put the TrueBlue in the amp that I'd bought it for, which was an old '65 Gibson Skylark that was my late Uncle's. He had some old Radio Shack speaker that I found out was probably made by Jensen back in the day. I liked the TrueBlue better in the Skylark because it gave it more definition and made the adjustments in the tone stack more meaningful, but I tried the vintage speaker in the VT30 and that's when it really sounded over the top amazing. Actually, the reason I liked the TrueBlue better in the Skylark is the same reason I like the vintage speaker in the VT30... The vintage speaker has lower clean headroom and it's old and broken in, so it smoothes everything out. On the Skylark that made every tone stack setting sound the same, and I wanted more versatility. But in the VT30 it made every single amp model sound like one of the best amps I've ever heard in my life. ..So the trick is to swap out for a 16ohm speaker that has a normal or lower amount of clean headroom, and if it's a broken in vintage speaker that's even better. If I was shopping for a new speaker for this purpose, I would go with something like a Jensen.
Thanks a million for the info Billy! Seeing how it takes time and some accidental luck sometimes we uncover truly great tone haphazardly. Thanks for laying it out for me. I saw recently were there was an update on the IRX. Didn't know if you had seen it.THANKS!
The tube in the vt30 doesn't drive the speaker.
D16gt with Mahogany back and sides is better IMHO, sweeter tone with better mids. Rosewood is lacking mids and bright which is filled in by singer, MAHOGANY!
I shan't gainsay mahogany
Hi enjoyed the video whats that tune called your playing at 3 minutes 45 seconds sounds great
It's a fiddle tune called "Little Red Haired Boy", or otherwise known as "Little Beggar Man". I learned it from JP Cormier's online course but I don't think he offers it any more. I use the same little bag of tests on all the guitar reviews so it's consistent, so it's in almost all of them. Really fun little tune.
It's probably supposed to be much faster than how I play it, to be honest.
I love my IRX. Use it live weekly
This made me WANT to buy one more than sell one. 😂
I want mine back
Alamo sells them for $3700ish
Hahah I Had so much Fun watching this video I have a kemper for 4 Years Now It's a Never Ending Story😊 Looking forward to your Next kemper video. Cheers
Thanks!

Gracias, mi amigo!
and.. it sounds like a mandolin
It's funny you mention that. On my other guitar, the maple OM with the curvy back, I use those strings exclusively for the exact reason that they make it sound like a mandolin 😂
I had the same conversation with myself at guitar center
😂
Ooh "tone" plywood. Sorry.. I'm actually intrigued alot by this guitar. If I can find a used one for a good price I'll buy it.
Is it worth buying only to be used as a preamp into an amp head in the return? I have a kraken preamp that sounds great that way, but I find it too tight after using a Xotic SL drive last couple of months.
Yeah, probably. I don't know what the thing you have now sounds like so I don't know if it will solve your problem, but I use it into the return of a guitar amp and it sounds pretty great. I even made Kemper profiles of this preamp into the return of one of my combo amps.
@@BillySoundFarm I might try in a store to see if it's to my liking. I don't have a clean channel on the victory kraken preamp. The voicing of it is similar to JCM 900 (crunch channel) 5150 (high gain channel).
Its made out of plywood😂
No, it's "tone" plywood
F what tune guys think.
lol
Man not sure what you’re talking about. Universal Audio w/ the Dream & Ruby are killing it right now. Top notch for sure
Yeah I like it too, this video was part of a series, I talk about what's great about it in the other videos

I have the IR-D, and I get a decent overdriven sound out of it, but I mainly use one of the channels in a "clean" setting and then just use a good overdrive in front of it. I'm happy with the results
Yeah I get that. I tried it out at a show using the channels and boost instead of Drive pedals and I can get there but I think I like the tone of the drive pedals better
Very nice son
Put your phone down and start making music for other people
Have a good day
I suck too but I don't have to put it on a video God loves you
No you suck
