    I’m a blind guitar player and I always enjoy looking at guitar reviews on youtube. I’ve got a martin d18, a yamaha FG830 CE, and an an Alvarez yairi DY82. Currently, I’m saving up for a Breedlove concert with a spruce top and Murtlewood back and sides. I’ll get a yamaha A5R after I get the breedlove. I don’t use picks, just my fingers, and I play a lot of classic country and Gospel on my guitars. I want a guitar that has a good bass sound that would be good for bluegrass playing. This guitar sounds as good as a martin hd28 which has a sound I really like. My Alvarez guitar has walnut back and sides with a spruce top.

    I too have the HX Stomp, which is a problem when utilizing the settings between single coils and humbuckers. You have to make 2 different variations to accommodate the pickup output. That's why I went back to an amp. It's much easier to make changes between guitars. As well, use an EQ pedal to dial in/out frequencies where required. It's so much easier than trying to work through menus on the fly. The 'tone' will never satisfy you while using the Stomp because there are so many options and variations. Too much time spent tweaking the Stomp - not enough time practicing your craft. That's my experience anyway. God luck

    I'll be honest- you have great advice on how to get a fatter tone from a strat- but the premise that the pickup selection on a strat should have some kind of linearity like your Les Paul does is broken. The problem you have a is a direct result of the framework that a guitar should function in such a way. I don't know of any strat player that shares this type of approach for gain staging.

  • @robertstan2349
    @robertstan2349 2 дня назад

    too bright? use the tone knob. not enough gain? play more aggressively/adjust the pickup height/ get a new pup/slap a baseplate on existing the pup. you can just use your hands or the volume knob on the fly to adjust output down. as a generalization strat style single coils can be more dynamic than the humbuckers and they will make you work more. that said, i love my Gibsons. also, try a real amp, instead of a simulated one and see how you like it

    Y ou can't fatten a pig by weighing it. Come on, somebody baught it for you? Wasn't Universal Audio was it? This pedal cost me 300 dollars and, honestly, it sucks. No matter how I try, there is no satisfying sound in this box. Spend your hard earned cash elsewhere. Unless you are Jimmy Page, 400 bucks is a whole lot of money!

    • @BillySoundFarm

      It wasn't universal audio. But I also felt really frustrated with this unit at times, so much so that I had to walk away from it for a month sometimes and come back fresh. I totally understand how you feel. ... here's some tips to try before you give up: - take a break from it if it's made you angry - don't use much gain/boost - start with bass and treble all the way down, bring each one off only if you need to and only as much as you need to - use the top green cab emulation, it's less temperamental than the others - try the setting in this video as a starting point, even if you're not playing church music these settings would be a good place to start ruclips.net/video/GuKznxTq-Ek/видео.htmlsi=axRecm0GjC0bVmQK

  • @976PAIN

    I have only used it with a single coil strat so far. I found that if I hit the IRX with an overdrive it smoothed it out quite a bit when adding gain on the IRX. I also bypassed the built in IRs and used the two notes wall of sound cabs and also the power amp section. I was able to get a much smoother sound, and I think just running an OD pedal in front was what did the trick. The next thing for me to do is run this into a tube power section of one of my amps. I'm guessing it will sound really good.

Do I only wind that part of the string (thin steel part) or pull it thru’ a bit to include some of the wrapped part of the string in the winding? Yes I have a tonex one. So far I think the thing is capable of great tones but I haven't proven it to myself yet. It's really annoying to use, I was thinking about making a video titled, "buy this if you like being angry all the time"... subsequently it sits in my laptop bag, I basically use it as an audio interface to my computer if I am practicing in a coffee shop or something. I love how it will power itself from the usb-c connection.

    My very first amp was also a Tube Works combo amp, not the model behind you but the one I had sported an ugly beige front panel, not the black with yellow logo they switched to in the 90s. I played metal and hardcore punk rock so I loved it. I recently bought the IR-X because I'm still into punk and metal and now live in an apartment with thin walls. I play a PRS with humbuckers so I haven't run into those issues you had trying to dial in a Strat tone. I was able to dial in great clean and gritty boosted tones on channel 1, and the unboosted high gain sound on channel 2 reminded me of the TW amp I had started out on way back. I only use the boost on ch2 for a little extra gain and volume on leads. Only effects I use are time based effects in the loop, Im really happy with it.

      @@DG-bb1jzNo, the major difference is that the hd-28 has scalloped bracing while the d-28 has non scalloped bracing. I actually purchased an hd-28 this weekend, so now I own both. The tone is different because of the bracing. The D-28 is very balanced in the lows, mids, and high end. But the HD-28 has less mid and much more bass. They both sound amazing, but I tend to play bluegrass and americana, so I’ll be selling the D28 and keeping the HD28. 2 more differences: the hd28 has diamond inlays on the fretboard instead of dots and the color of the spruce top is lighter. Hope that helps.

    I don't know if any of you have tried this... Run the UA into the effects loops of two different amps on stage and then mic those amps into the p.a. I use tube amps so you bypass the pre amps but still go through the power amp tubes and real speakers . Now you have a stereo rig as a pedal platform and the sound at your back as well as being in the mix Best part for me is now the output volume acts like an attenuator and I can get my tone at any volume . I just dial it in to whatever the mix is. It works fine straight in to a p.a but this little addition is great for my needs gigging. try it and let me know what you think

    I bought the IRX this week, and i'm very, very dissapointed. It sounds boxy, no presence top end. I conected it to my Duncan Powerstage 200, to a 4x12 Marshall 1960b V30s. I also have a Dime Head NAM Player, and the capture that i have of the Friedman BE100 amp, through the same SD Powerstage and cab, sounds so, so much better than the IRX, it has all the top end presence that the real amp has, and the IRX don't. I think i'm selling the IRX

But I don't hate it, and I played a set last night and I actually used profiles of the IRX running through the power amp section of this old mosvalve combo that I had lying around. Just worked out that way that it was the best sounding thing for what I was doing and what guitar I was using.

    The middle pickup - with its tone control - is the thicker bridge tone people are looking for. The bridge is excellent for stuff like country and surf.

      Yeah I think you're right. It's probably best to just let a strat be a strat instead of trying to find some way to turn it into a Les paul. But I can't help myself. Before I developed my EQ blocks, I lived on the middle pickup a lot.

    I sold mine and I’m only feeling the regret a year later. Sounds really good, just needed a few more minutes tweaking

      I am feeling the regret. That thing was so handy. I just released a video about eq for stratocasters that would have been so much easier if I still had the unit instead of helix native

    Man please cut the mic camera sound on the guitar parts , the whack o the strings sound stronger than de process audio

      @BillySoundFarm 24 дня назад

      @@tonguitarra I agree it's bad, but it wasn't supposed to be like that. I recorded the guitar signal separately on my computer, but when I sat down to edit, I realized that somehow the guitar track got recorded dry. I was horrified. The only reason I was able to salvage the video is because I happened to be using my computer speakers to monitor the guitar instead of headphones, and the camera picked that up, otherwise I would have had to scrap this whole thing. It would have been much better the way I planned. Sorry man

      Glad you liked it! I've been planning this exact video for years but I didn't do it because I didn't think it would do well. It's performing better than my last 10 videos now. Shows what I know, LOL, I wouldn't have made it if you hadn't engaged with the other video. Thanks!

    Dude! Listen. The Helix modeling is fake as f***, it adds input compression to anything you plug in so that you don't have to worry about gain staging. Every model has a perfect sweep of gain no matter what you plug in. What you are experiencing with this pedal is normal. This is what low gain singles into an unboosted tube pre sound like.

      So you're saying if I use a clean boost with my strat before the irx it will fix it? I'm interested what you think of the follow up video I did on this pedal: ruclips.net/video/hbyj41fcXE4/видео.htmlsi=uTAePYHUI_mRB3Oz

      @@BillySoundFarm Check to make sure your guitar pots are 250K. Boost it. Getting a saturated lead sound out of singles is not easy. Why do you think humbuckers are so popular?

    Bridge and nut are synthetic bone, just like they use up the Taylor line... Fretboard is Ebony.... Under that top is Taylor's latest bracing, which they call C-Class, it thins out the overtones for clarity but has a little more bass response than the V bracing they use in the all solid wood guitars of this body shape... Three months ago I bought the 217, which spec wise is the same guitar you're holding in this video but with a gloss sunburst finish.... My Gibson J-45 hasn't been touched much sense.... Highly recommend the 217e and 117e models to those looking for a mid-range focused instrument with clear note separation.... You're right the laminate back and sides don't really matter when everything else is right. The main reason cheap laminate guitars don't sound great is more to do with the the top wood not being conditioned right or too thick, the bracing wood being cheap or the finish being too thick. You'll find those traits on most guitars under $500. Taylor doesn't make those mistakes on any thing they build... Back and sides, regardless if laminate or all-solid contribute to maybe 5% of the tone

    " Make it your own" , yes do listen to as many samples and try to actually hear the pickup "Live" through an amp. I record every alteration and then listen back till am happy. Every piece of wire/ magnet/ solder/ potentiometer/ condenser/ will make a difference to the tone. These 60s fat pickups have a basic design that can't be duplicated because they are made using Alnico 2 magnets which by nature make the pickup "Warmer" and less brittle. Advantage is when you turn your amp "UP" and your ears don't get fatigued with the harsh treble. The only others worth a look are the PV 65s if you like clean tones..great video, thanks.
