Rare Sony HiVision Part 2: Primary Display, or Barn Find Nonsense?
Hey folks! Welcome back to HiVision. I got a ton of comments on the previous Sony Trinitron HiVision video- and a lot of them seemed to want me to run with it as a primary display. I tried that for a month or two, and here are my findings.
Also- to just correct myself in the video- the HiVision hated the stock Valve Steam Deck Dock- not the Steam Deck itself. Weird stuff, that dock. For a more detailed look at the inputs and features of this television, please see my previous video.

Sony’s CRAZY EXPENSIVE Walkman WM1AM2! Is it WORTH the insane price!?

I recently sold a bunch of my dusty COVID era painted Warhammer Armies, and bought something potentially dumber with the money. What does $1300 (2.5 Warhammer armies) get you in Sony's Walkman lineup?

UPDATE: I have made a second video about this set, using it in den setup: ruclips.net/video/1R6b7HkEkFk/видео.html I've been spending a couple of months messing around with this absolutely insane top of the line Sony KW-36HDF9 from Japan. Pokémon Diamond/Pearl/Platinum/HeartGold/SoulSilver have this TV inside the player's house.
I am deffo buying one, and like you I will be ripping vinyl and cd's etc. and also playing my own beats.
@@roakey8167 I’m actually working on a video about ripping CDs directly to the unit with an accessory I found. I drove around Japan this summer and bought CDs at various second hand shops, and ripped them to the player. It was great.
Nice TV. The colour accuracy looks amazing for a TV that old. I thought there maybe some colour differential differences, like maybe the colours not being uniform on the screen, but it looks amazing here. Personally, I am not a fan of CRT and would of definitely passed it by, but I am really glad that someone is able to enjoy it. I also really like the fact that the back was almost flat and not like most tubes which jut out of the back line a cone.
How do you go about asking companies if they have any CRTs still in somewhere in their storage? Is it just shooting them an email? I'd love to get a nice CRT one of these days
@@Invictus_Mithra I’d say call local stations. Can’t hurt to ask.
@@dorfus Wow, thanks for the quick reply! I'll give it a shot
@@Invictus_Mithra I used to live in NYC, and most of them cleared out their stock of this sort of thing in and around 2013. I live in a more rural area now, and it seems like given the cheaper storage space, places around here held onto them longer. The station I got this from was moving, and finally cleared out their storage.
@@dorfusid try that but u don’t have room for crts I kept to small ones from my grandparents the best I could do is a 20 inch in my den but I don’t want to deal with the size for the moment and I have no one who can help me lift them I have s small Sony crt that’s a little bit rare it’s there last small tv made in Japan with all dont parts
I consider zx-300 but still its quite expensive!
O'Connell Plaza
Expensive toy…being spammed by these videos since I digged out my old ipod. Works just fine with a pair of silent bose headphones. The reason to have an mp3 player (yeah I know people say DAP these days) instead of the phone is for me not to have access to internet, facebook, …distractions. Seems this luxuary machine is more of a toy, a fun toy….
Use to own this one, was best watching sci-fi movies on
9:15 why did you slide in kikis if youre not gonna show it playing on the tv at all lmao i got so excited to see it. (but if you wanna make another video on this set seeing ponyo on it would be cool)
This is an amazing setup. I think you covered everything you would need. I'm mapping out my basement in my head and want dual vewlixes and something for vertical games. I'd love a small Mini Cute, but the prices make that unobtainable. I am also RGB modding my consoles to go along with a dual RGB-modded Trinitron CRT setup. I supposed I could have gone with the mister, but I already had some consoles.
That case is perfection! I have the NW A306
Esto si es un santo grial
Where can i buy one
@@JavierArensperez-ql1xp the only one I’m aware of is the one in the video. I’ve hunted for other people with them and found some people who have a similar model sold in the USA, but it lacks the MUSE and RGB input. So, uh, I guess I’m the only place you could buy one!
@dorfus what is a muse and rpg input and how much do you have ebay how much does the tv weigh
@@JavierArensperez-ql1xp this isn’t really an eBay thing- it weighs over 200 lbs and has a flight case- it would travel freight.
@@dorfus how much for the tv
A version of this exact set was actually sold in the US for $9k in 1998, under the model number KW-34HD1, just without the Muse / Hi-Vision functionality. For whatever reason, it also didn't include the VGA port on the front.
I've seen that one mentioned lately! It really does look identical, though missing major chunks of the feature set. So wild! I should look at the manual for it, I wonder if it mentions the PS1 too.
I thought there was a way to remove overscan on older ATi and NVIDIA cards. Is that not a thing anymore when using analog outputs?
Honestly I’m fearful for that tv with how that table looks! Please get a sturdier table!
@@hehashivemind6111 go watch the second video!
Where is the best way to legally download high quality audio for things like this Walkman? Thanks!
my 2005 hd crt is amazing for gaming... but ok cool tv tho!
Yes, RGB signals directly drive the tube. Like always. Thats is why rgb is superiour and lightguns work.
It's not about RGB- it's about the lack of a digital scaler adding latency to the signal. The reason that TV is "special" compared to other HD CRT sets is that most of them scale all signals (RGB / Composite / Component / HDMI) to 1080i or a similar interlaced format, and in the process of scaling lag is added.
@@dorfus there is no other format which drives crt tubes directly, as you stated on the lack of upscaling which isnt requiring driving the colour lines directly. In that case it decides when a vblank/Hblank will appear, which is the stuff the light gun likes to see knowing what line is drawn. You sure its not about rgb? Component/composite all needs a subtraction for extracting the rgb signals for the crt tube, RGB IS THE SIGNAl for the tube itself! And always is analog(you can steer this out digitally as wel). But then what is the point if rgb? Dont understand me wrong but living in an area with scart and rgb support even on digital crts always worked with a direct steering of the cathode ray. Maybe it works different in ither areas since they did not even support rgb in the first place, which is then understandable.
oh, yeah my dad brought one of these home from his trip to japan a while back. wild there's a second one in new england lol
Will it play from my spotify account?
@@12DreamsFull yup! Anything that runs on Android.

I was looking for reasons for not buying this Walkman… and then you put out that case … I’m buying it NOW
Glad I bought my hori Taito fight stick over ten yrs ago for $ 300 same every thing on the Vewlix 🎉
@@sullysuvann1380 the construction is identical- I have one as well. It’s a 1:1 copy, down to the thickness of metal used.

Cool Video. I really enjoyed it. I have been working on a small game center in my apartment and was really happy to see what you have set up in your space. thank you for sharing.
Hello... I am using a 5v 1a charger to charge the walkman and I noticed that it takes 2 hours and 30 minutes from zero unlike the computer where it took the 4 hours advertised. Is it normal that it lasts less or is the charger inadequate?
@@capitanlevi203 it is capable of faster charging with better chargers.
@@dorfus The 4 and a half hours announced by Sony were connected to the PC, I suppose... so I'm not doing anything bad to the device?
@@capitanlevi203 I mean I don’t really know what your PC offers in the way of charging capabilities. It really depends on the port. But theoretically it should be totally fine.
Which Bigbox theme is that? I really like it but haven't been able to locate anything similar that properly displayed in 4:3.
Hi mr dorfus,do you have a laserdisc player,? If you have one, please connect through s-video input ,because with this way you can use the tunner(comb filter) of the sony crt tv,and when you connect through composite video the tunner(comb filter) from the laserdisc player, only a few have a good tunner, including the 1080ihd laserdisc player(hidef in analogue video)rare and unique like you tv
Loved the video. I love playing my old games I used to play on n64 and GameCube. Whatever emulator and hdmod you, you are not getting the same feeling.

Sony Walkman TPS-L2, one and only.
Lovely setup, you could add some nice arcade stools in your room for an even more authentic experience.
where did you buy the astro city mini?
The tiny plastic model kit? I think it came from Amazon- I haven’t seen more of them in ages- and I have been looking. There’s a Vewlix as well. The one here is specifically CAVE Tate focused.
People pay a lot for a phone. Why can't we buy a marvelous music device like this one?
I think most phones these days are more expensive than a Walkman like this. The issue is most people aren’t buying it all at once, they’re rolling it into their phone plan.
What resolutions have you tried via Windows? I would love to see a video today where you try the resolutions (progressive and interlaced) on Windows.
We have this concept on productions called multi view. It's a little box that takes multiple inputs normal camera sources and displays them all on the screen at the same time, it saves you using 4 or more smaller monitors. Now days we can have 4x1080 pictures on a 4K monitor and still see the 1080 resolution. I had no idea that they were doing this in the late 90's that tv studio must have been on the cutting edge of tech.
Hey! Yeah I actually work in film VFX and have seen those setups on set. Though I work in a dept that is relegated to the cinesync over an iPad. But yeah- effectively- that’s that this tv does. It can display several sources at once- super unusual for the time.
Those CRT sets with native 480p passthrough are true gems. Many seem to like doubling to 960p as well, which I'm not sure if that adds any lag since it's not using the passthrough mode, but I'd think 960p force upscaled to 1080p (or whatever the max is for this and certain XBR models) would be negligible - no deinterlacing to do and it's a small increment compared to the TV starting with 240p/480i
I saw a video showing a guy capping the magnets on some smaller bookshelf speakers with a steel fence post cap. Not sure if this affects the speaker performance but it pretty much completely video shielded the magnets and protected his old crt. It might be difficult to find something to fit over those huge magnets though. lol
Huh that’s wild! I’d be worried about messing with those old JBLs- I actually had to find NOS woofers for them from a studio equivalent. This particular speaker actually runs the woofers in a weird inverse wiring. But the idea that I could change other speakers to be magnetically shielded gives me ideas…
FIRE!! i really like this cab
thumbs up for Violent Storm OST usage.
Any truth to complaints about its sluggishness to load and terrible batters life?
It’s not a fast OS on this, but I removed transition animations and it feels fine. The battery life isn’t really an issue for me- it’s better than my iPhone but that wouldn’t take much.
@@dorfus Thank you for your reply! I can opt for the more responsive Sony UI, right? Also, does it work with AirPods at all?
@@maxidrivemaxidrive4330 I would imagine it would work with any Apple headphone in Bluetooth, but you wouldn’t be getting the Apple wireless codec that makes those sound decent on Apple devices. So yeah- it would work, but I don’t know if it’d be worth it.
@@dorfus Good point! I just wanna use what I already have and not buy new earbuds.
@@maxidrivemaxidrive4330 I dunno if this would do more for you than what your phone does now, though. If you plan on getting hard to drive earphones later, it’s probably worth a look?
Very informative!
Glad to see it in action again. How many arbitrary resolutions does it support or is it just the standard TV 480i, 480p, 720p, and 1080i? I'm curious to see if you can get those resolutions to display natively for some 2D indie games like Sea of Stars, which is 640x360
I’ve actually tested resolutions - it is essentially a dual scan. It runs at 31k, and 32k. 480p and 1035i, from what I can tell. Content can be viewed wide or 4:3. If you’re plugging into the back component / muse / composite, you’re getting 1035i. In the front, 240p is doubled to 480p. So basically- not quite tri-sync, but relatively useful for old games.
Totally feel your enthusiasm about that case. Wish I had this for my NWA306.
