The Dygma Defy: A Premium Keyboard That Hits Both Ways
Note: This video was re-uploaded to resolve issues with the audio levels on the original.
This is an honest review of the Dygma Defy based on several weeks of use. It has a solid build with the best sound and feel, with some of the best hardware out of the split keyboards I've reviewed (at the time of publishing). The RGB underglow is amazing. The built-in tenting is the best I've tried. But, on the other hand, the firmware limitations are a major hinderance for those who want to get the most functionality out of their keyboard.

Building your own keyboard can be less expensive than buying a prebuilt board, but you miss out on nice features, and (depending on skill level) get a lower quality keyboard. If you have hand, wrist or shoulder RSI I honestly recommend moving to dictation software to vastly reduce keyboard use. This isn’t so helpful for software coding unfortunately.

    How long would you suggest it might take someone to adapt to the Defy or something like the Voyager... as a touch typist at 80 WPM? I love the idea of the Defy and LOVE Dygma as a company. However, I'm more considering the Voyager due to the footprint. I think I would love a version of the Defy built with low profile switches like the Voyager and without palm rests.

    Went from the moonlander to the voyager. And honestly I want something with more keys. I don't want to reconfigure everything for everything and every layout I had now with the voyager just has some problems in one application or another. The moonlander was ok but the thumb cluster was so out of the way, that the big red button just didn't work for me. This one seems to be a good "compromise". The thumb cluster seems to be in the perfect spot. At least from just dry typing. Also for games I prefer more keys. That being said, I really don't want to buy another keyboard right now.

    On Glove80 I find the thumb cluster awkward. On the other extreme, I hate boards that make me bring my thumb in beyond the index column. I have now ordered an Imprint (customized Dactyl-style). We'll see how that goes.

    I have the original kenesis advantage, moonlander, and a 36 keyboard. Sounds like your RSI symptoms were similar. When I try anything besides the advantage my RSI flares up, also Im just not as productive for some reason. I want a split keyboard for traveling. The glove80 sounds promissing but curious how close it "feels" to the advantage. Not sure how to describe it but the moonlander just doesnt feel right to me and could never get the hang of it.

    Glow 80 look hard to blind typing, all keys are same and same size, it look like 360 is better if you try to learn blind typing on them.

    It is true, although in my opinion you could say that there are several levels of DIY and depending on that, I can be expensive or not. In my case I put together one just to my liking from scratch and I think I spent no more than 70 dollars, of course hand wired.

    I was looking into getting a nicer mechanical keyboard and now am falling down this rabbit hole of split ergo keyboards. and while the prices aren't cheap per se, considering the added complexity these aren't particularly expensive either when contrasted with a lot of other stuff in the keyboard world. the only way to get cheap is to have mass manufactured stuff that cuts corners. anything that is done in small runs is gonna be expensive and especially so if someone needs to solder and assemble it by hand.

    I have an Apple keyboard for my iPad and it was a bit expensive. Just ordered a Voyager and I can’t wait to get my hands on it. I also looked at keyboard kits but the cost was about the same, but a lot less hassle. Thinking about going the full monty and trying out colmak for the layout of the keys.

    My first split keyboard was the glove80. I don't know that I would be able to buy another split keyboard without a well or a curve like the kinesis or the glove 80. If I didn't have RSI I might consider some of these other keyboards, I do like the look of this one but having that ergonomic key well it's just such a big deal. That being said I really haven't messed around with configuration, I really just have mine set up with a layer of numbers and a layer of symbols which I never use. I'll have to check out The timeless homerow mod, that looks pretty good as a introduction into using the full capabilities of this keyboard.

    • @Thomas-zl2hb
      @Thomas-zl2hb 19 дней назад

      @@tirunagariuttam They do not sell a ton so have a higher price to recoup costs. Also the key welled keyboards are not simple to manufacture. That's my non-expert take on it.

    I am trying to decide between the voyager and the glove. I get rsi but I have small hands and the voyager appeals for that reason. I will mount mine using arms where I can move it however I like. Interested in why you dont focus on your mouse? I have a small mouse pad arriving today and considering a tiny/mini mouse like ploopy but also looking at keyboards that have a tiny trackpad and also trackball by the B/N keys which might be helpful in addition to a mouse pad like the lily58. Would be interested in your thoughts thanks!

    I make my living on my computer and easily spend 16 hours/day using it. I have no problems investing heavily in a quality setup. $600 is very steep for the keyboard, but once I got over the learning curve, the value is off the charts.

  • @kj3d812

    16:21 The question is, is ZSA's advice regarding the steep learning curve directed at users who've only ever used straight (traditional) keyboards, or does it also apply to those of us who've been using ergonomic/split/tented keyboards for years? I myself have used nothing but ergonomic boards (most recently MS Sculpt) for decades, ever since the mid-1990's, so I'm used to the "Alice" layout. Every one of the boards I've used has had a "dome" in the middle (i.e. tented). Right now I'm trying to get used to my first Alice-layout *mechanical* keyboard, the Keychron V10 Max, and while the Alice layout is great, the lack of tenting is already causing some wrist and elbow pain after only a week of light usage. (I no longer work a day job so my computing is for personal use only.) I've been considering the Moonlander but, like its competitors, the hefty price and costly return policy makes me hesitate. (Yes, I know that ~$400 is "cheap" for a mechanical keyboard, but I'm looking for function, not to get into it as a hobby.) I appreciate videos like this that talk about the downsides of these keyboards, to help me decide.
