The thing that pisses me of the most about censorship in Yugioh isn’t how bad it was when 4kids was at their peak, it’s that still happening. The satanic panic ended decades ago and yet every subsequent series has been butchered one way or another. Not to mention, the constant name changes makes talking about the anime a massive pain. The cards are just as bad. For a game that marketed itself as edgier Pokemon, it’s never been that explicit. Nor is it even played by children. I refuse believe that a child can reasonably play the same card game where fucking Vaylantz exists and there’s an entire play style known pejoratively as synchro masturbation and if there is, I’m pretty sure he’s mature enough to see more of Rafflesia’s midriff or Lil-la’s tights than Komoney thinks he should. Also hate whenever they change card names for dumb joke. Skyfang Brigade was a fine name, Fur Hire is not. I wish eternal damnation on whoever thought it was funny to change Avram’s flavour text. It was probably Kevin Tewart. He has a history of this sort of thing. Rot in Hell, Tewart. Bastard.

the worst things about the ocean dub are the obnoxious "I'll send you to another dimension" I swear, one episode had it like 5 times. It wasn't clever the first time nor was it the 1000th time. The intro and outro were so terrible, just low effort edits from 2-3 movies and suddenly the intro had MAJOR spoilers of trunks/goku going superayian. And the "music" sounded like "here you go, make music about this random anime called dragonball z" "what is it about?" "no idea mate" "ah ok, I guess I'm just gonna repeat "dragon dragon dragon ball dragon dragon ball z" 100 times". That's exactly what it sounds like. One of the most low effort mockeries of anything in music that I ever heard. Like some 6 year old who came up with it.

Very strange how unbothered 4Kids and American censors are by su!cides, deaths by falling, and mind wiping. You'd think that a nation who worship guns so much would be more inclined to leave firearms in and remove the former.

I didnt watch DBZ from the beginning in the early 2000s, so the dub changes were very strange watching it out of order.

Personally I do like the dub but yeah I have my issues The removal of violence is never useful (especially if it’s as bad an English TMHT censorship) and the whole lost art thing is awful But I do appreciate the removal of the perving why is Japan so hell bent on having these characters without it affecting the plot (P5S also had this issue but in reverse where the guys accidentally overstood there time slot in a hot spring and the girls beat them up as they were finding another exit (since the bathhouses gender swapped and the male changing room door had been locked)

the DIC dub certainly wasn't perfect but i've seen the original Japanese version and VIZ and they just didn't win me over nostalgia is definitely part of it but with Viz i definitely agree about the voices

Some of the changes are just goddamned stupid. Pegasus J Crawford is a perfectly usable name, but they changed it anyway. Furthermore, although I don’t blame them for heavily localising it overall, I do get annoyed that the western fanbase pretty much exclusively seems to reference the series as if they’ve only watched the dub. Other fanbases have gradually moved on to incorporating more of the original when they speak about it, but YGO fans refuse to do so.

Kai is my favorite version of DBZ. And this is coming from someone who grew up with the Ocean Group and the Funimation dub.

Ocean dub movies are the best of all the dubs, which we had those voice actors with good dialogue. Heard the original Ocean cast did a Dragonball Kai but it was never released.

Are we not gonna discuss how dark this got once Duel Monsters became the central focus. Yugi straight up killed Panik via asphyxiation.

I prefer the dic dub and cloverway dub versions of sailor moon since i grew up watching the anime and i still love the dic dub of sailor moon too. I really didn't like the viz dub version to be honest, i appreciate the viz dub and i watched the entire anime, but the viz dub felt too samey with all of the girls,even luna that they just sounded so alike at times. The dic dub version may have been chessy at times, but it really had lots of charm to it and i also really loved serena's and everyone else's voices from the dic dub more than the viz dub version to be honest. The dic dub version will always be my favorite dub version of sailor moon.

In many ways, Duel Monsters is a different show in the dub. It's crazy how different it is.

Imma be real with you my brother. When you ask which of the dubs I prefer, I have to admit I literally cannot sit through the Funi dub. Some of the voices work, some are really good, but a lot of the changes and edits made just make it impossible. It gets even worse on some of the dvd releases where for some reason they decided silence is the worst thing ever and so fill up any silence with dialogue.

My dream dub would be Kai, uncut but WITH filler (it’s fun), and with Peter Kelamis as Goku, with the falconer score. Otherwise, I prefer the original Japanese dub. Also, as a kid, the voice change wasn’t super noticed until the buu saga, where the designs changed (especially vegeta compared to the saiyan saga) so id assumed their voices just changed as they got older.

As someone who was first exposed to this dub and edit as a teen, the idea of calling it "the next dimension" didnt appear strange to me as Goku did appear to go to this strange universe where people lived, traveled, and trained, after he died.

I think your ending speech about the transformation of YGO to something more merchandise driven was very interesting- in my view im not as pessimstic as you are (or at least i saw that speech as pessimistic lol) I think both the japanese and (to an extent) english anime are very much more aligned in telling the original themes of friendship and the idea of the other self. On top of that, despite how the story focused more on Duel Monsters, Takahasi had the last hurrah by making the Millenium World story (even if that had to be rushed for declining readership and his own health) and even having it expanded upon more in the anime. yeah at the end of the day theyre selling cards to sell money but i think the themes are still there underneath it all, and judging from what takashi says in each manga volumes opening letters, in which he discusses the themes and inspirations

I am so glad I grew up with the Kai version on Nicktoons. It was basic censorship like the lack of cursing or gore. But that was it. It was kinda understandable looking back.

I've said this before, when death is consistently used as a failure state for the heroes, the idea of death loses most of it's impact. Death is a joke in fictional media for good reason. So the changing of death into magical punishments didn't really do anything to hurt Yu-Gi-Oh or GX I felt. If anything, it made those very rare times where actual death or injury much more shocking or scary. Yugi vs possessed Joey with the loser being sent to the bottom of the sea? Much scarier after 2 whole seasons of "Sent to the Shadow Realm". Same with GX and the character who has an ONSCREEN HEART ATTACK!

I also want to mention that the English dub of Yu-Gi-Oh also replaced a lot of the Japanese sound effects with western sound effects. My guess is to make the show feel less alien to viewers by adding sound effects western audiences are familiar with in cartoons like TMNT and Scooby Doo
