    This was a really good video! This game has so many intricate layers, from the PSCT, damage step and handtraps and I feel like you did a good job explaining the kinda second nature stuff we know as players. I know what a hand trap is, why they’re played and which to play each format, but it’s hard to quickly describe that. The only area I felt wasn’t incredibly helpful was the deck building portion. You explained ratios and deck types well, but considering how this game is based on Archtypes it woukdve been good to explain how you might pick a deck and which are good for new players. I’m a BA enjoyer too and it was one of the first decks I played, but you can’t use it as an example in 2024. Yes Beatrice pass is simple, but a better example could’ve been the new Exodia deck, Kashtiera/Zoo, Swordsoul or Marincess. There’s an example for each mechanic and personally I think these decks work well to learn combos and the way cards interact as interruptions. It also could’ve been good to break down starters, extenders, boss monsters and staples as these are commonly known terms in deck building, but I’m sure if people get into the game through this video, they’ll learn it from another video whike researching. I also wish more people could get into this game, it’s worth learning despite how brain melting the complexity can be at times. I’ve been playing since 2015 and still love it.

    15:52 I see what you did there. Also, ever noticed the similarities between the song in this stage and the main theme of the game?

    • @four-en-tee
      @four-en-tee День назад

      Yeah, its basically a slightly sped-up version of Bomb Omb Battlefield with different instruments. I'm pretty sure that theme is just a leitmotif throughout the game, the slide theme borrows heavily from it also. As for the Dire Dire Docks, Boo's Haunt and Lethal Lava Land themes, I'd have to sit down and look at their sheet music before I could prove that they do, though my gut is leaning towards yes. If they are borrowing from it, they're without a doubt the most transformative.

      Ocarina and Majora would be pretty fun to cover in the future. I may do that on the side leading up to the final video in this series since I'm gonna pull parallels between Ocarina's Water Temple and Wet Dry World.

    Man, lemme just get it out of the way: I'm praying this gets more views, it deserves as many as possible. Using the instrumental of Ultimate Showdown AND One Beer as bgm is wild, doesn't even feel out of place. Props for that alone. But as for the actual video, I've never seen anything quite like it. Overviewing a full 3d Mario level, basically asking "but why?" then answering that in your own way with a pinch of dev history mixed in, all in a digestable 18 minutes. You've certainly got something here. (A bit of a tangent, but I find these deep dives and interpretations of shit like Mario 64 levels so neat and intriguing. Can't say I enjoy the game itself unfortunately, but this is a way for me to experience something I'd have little affiliation with otherwise, and I'm thankful for it.) And from an outsider's perspective, the bridge just seems like the devs thought of a funny way to do a hidden teleporter. Like "well the bridge is broken, but it still works, gets you from one end to the other :)". Idk, just feels like a goofy little detail lol. Biggie Bird my goat fr, just learned his name today and I would die for him.

      I will say that this this series is going to be the epitome of "over-analysis" (its why I cited Game Theory as an inspiration for this mini-series), but I am approaching each episode earnestly. Like I said in the video, the primary goal really is to spark new discussions about this game. Its why I took on the Jeff the Killer retrospective, and its also why I chose to take on this project (although this series is going to have a few thematic through-lines that'll pay off once the WDW video eventually comes out, this entire series is going to build up to that video).

    If im being honest I feel like some modern aspects of YGO! NEED to be removed and just make the current format still playable as a older outdated one. Ik people will push back against this, but really after observing everything and talking with many about this. I truly do believe this needs to be done as scary as it sounds

    While this wasn't valid last year, nowadays it might be a valid take since it's susceptible to droll and there are decks these days that can legit run only 1-card combos and handtraps.

    It'd help if you show actual readable version of the cards (as in, readable for the viewers of the video), instead of blurry or unreadable ones. I mean, in the video, sometimes you show some clear digital text, other times you show blurry cards. At 21:26, if I have no idea what "Tour Guide" is, I'd have to google something like "yugioh card tour guide", opening a new tab, leaving the vid, much hassle that should've been only "okay, let me pause, I wanna read the card". And thankfully for this case, when I googled those exact keywords, I found the correct card, "Tour Guide of the Underworld". For the first part of the guide, I feel that it's still not structured well enough, that I don't think people with zero knowledge of YGO would understand. I think the scenario that would most likely happen is some sort of information overload (too much information at once, I don't know anymore). The thing about modern YGO is, the game is so complex that there's no way to simply explain it in one short video. The best approach to make someone understands YGO is the slow approach. For the slow approach, I guess a step by step series of videos might do. The videos tell what YGO is from the era where normal monsters are pretty much the only thing that can win you the game, until nowadays where hand-traps are necessary to avoid losing the game. It's also necessary that the videos conform these rules: a. Any card you're currently talking about are being clearly and readably shown on screen. This will make viewers only need to pause the video whenever they need to read. They don't need to google things themselves. b. Any rules you're currently explaining about are texted on screen, as to avoid any misunderstandings. It'd help as well if the text is pulled from actual rule-book. c. Explanations are done as slowly and as detailed as possible. Being a series has the benefit of having no particular time limit, so use this to its full benefit, explain everything to the minorest details like "Missing the Timing", "What can you actually do during Damage Step", etc. d. Actual duels must be shown from time to time. As it can tremendously boost the understandability of concepts. Even showing a turn, what a turn would practically be (for various given scenarios), can be a huge difference. I believe it'd be very different if someone sees for themselves, what happens during Draw Phase, how nothing usually happens during Standby Phase, how Normal Summoning actually works in practice, what's going on in actual Battle Phase, how you reduce LP to 0, and so on and so forth. I believe the understandability would drastically improve, especially if it's done well, with the understanding that whoever is watching it understands nothing about YGO at all. Uh, sorry I started rambling.

    I'm a bit late to the party to mention that Pastra did remake him, but it's interesting in hindsight that he did almost everything you suggested. The attitude isn't really fully there and neither is the camp, but he is a pretty terrifying villain and is made to be a hundred percent evil without any remorse. So over all, solid work on Pastra's part, the only thing I didn't agree with was the ending in light of how Jeff wanted to die. Him being suicidal defeats the whole purpose of him as an urban legend and not just because he cannot be put into more stories afterwards, but because these stories are by definition written to be unfinished, endless. Even if they have full character arcs, constancy defines their very beings. Jeff isn't Jeff because he goes through an arc and learns something good or bad. He's Jeff because he's Jeff the Killer. He looks like a teenage Joker and he kills people for the joy of killing, that's it. Part of why I never liked his fixation on Liu in some of the other stories because it felt like a downgrade to a character who was always defined by his free-spirited desire to kill in increasingly ridiculous ways. Making him obsessed with his brother, while interesting, feels like it's taking away from that. But this is just my opinion, Pastra's rewrite was pretty great otherwise.

    Honestly think you moved a little too fast into talking about tournament yugioh. I think starting game by game would be better alongside discussing side deck theory which I think is integral to the tournament experience. I think you’d need a far more ambitious video to prepare a player to enter a tournament. Finally, I think it would be good to explain the basics of card theory like removing opponents cards is good and getting more cards for you to play is what makes a card good.
