The AVO CT378A Vintage Signal Generator.
Electronic Archaeology is now the proud custodian of this impressive AVO CT378A signal generator, manufactured in 1961 at the Avocet House, Vauxhall Bridge Rd, London, and in almost pristine condition, aside from a few bumps and knocks on the outer case. Its range spans from 2 to 250 MHz, with a second harmonic range extending up to 500 MHz. This piece not only looks fantastic but also performs superbly, making it a valuable addition to the EA workbench. We’ll be taking a closer look at the controls, peeking inside, and doing some testing to see how it performs. It will undoubtedly feature in future content.

Retro Tech UK 2024 Vintage Electronics Fair at the Sports Connexion near Coventry. After last year's visit, we were looking forward to another great event, and, it delivered. Around 150 stalls with quality gear at excellent prices. I came away with some great stuff and met up with like minded geeks. See the end of this video to have a peek at this year's haul! Retro Tech UK 2023 Vintage Electronics Fair at the Sports Connexion near Coventry (storm troopers included) - which was formally called the National Vintage Communications Fair, (NVCF) established in 1992. As this was our first visit for almost 30 years, I wasn't sure what to expect. However, it was much better than anticipated, around 150 stalls with quality items at great prices - we will def...

Large Vintage Electronics Donation Unboxing. (I made this video whilst looking through each box) A donation of vintage electronics including Radios, TV’s, Valves (tubes), components/parts etc. There are drawers, boxes and bags full of stuff to go through - some of it is junk and other bits & bobs I will keep for my collection.
Cool
👍🏼😊
Hi Peter, Great video ! And a very nice piece of equipment 👍🏼
Thank you, Gerrit.😊
I have a AVO signal generator just with 2 valves drift's quite a lot and the am mod causes fm on the carrier. Your AVO in a different kettle of fish and very well engineered.
I like all the AVO equipment. I assume your unit is the earlier AVO wide-range signal generator. I bought one of these at the RetroTech show earlier this year because it covers the lower frequencies that the CT378A doesn't handle. These units should be relatively easy to restore to good working order since they are fairly simple. The schematics are available for free online at VMARS Manuals.
A table full of HACKERS ! That's gets a American excited. Don't see many over here .
The Hackers were a great British set, the Rolls-Royce of radios.
@electronicarchaeology I have never seen one here in Tennessee . Shortwave is one of my hobby especially older ones . Thanks for the reply.
Radio Heaven !
It really is, at least for me! Whenever I go to these events, they make me dizzy.
Bought one of these at a car boot sale. I think I paid about £5, unfortunately its without the front cover and power lead. Must try it one day !!
Nice! £5 is an absolute bargain! Even without the front cover and power lead, if it hasn’t been messed around with, there’s no reason why it shouldn’t work.
Very nice piece of equipment,I have one too.
I'm glad to hear you have one too. I hope yours is in great condition as well.
👍😀
All the CT kit was massively over engineered quality
Yes, the CT378A must have been moved around a bit over the years, but the case protected the unit's control panel. This was by far the best one I had seen for sale.
2 meg minimim, huh ? No IF calibration possible for most AM receivers that need around 454 khz. Beautiful unit.
I agree that not having the lower frequencies is one of its limitations, along with the lack of FM modulation. This is addressed in the later model, the AFM2, which looks almost identical. It's not a problem for me, as I need the higher frequencies for some of my military radio sets, and I have a couple of signal generators that cover the 454 kHz range. As you said, it does look great, especially on my shelf.
Take those old big radios and make them into guitar amps
I did exactly that a few decades ago, and now I kind of regret it because it was such a lovely radio. But at least I still have the amp!
Cheers from Southern Ukraine 🖐️☺️🤝👍❤
Greetings from the UK! 🇬🇧 Thanks for watching from Southern Ukraine! 😊
Super radio🎉
Mercie
WOW i must be seeing things ? £20 to get in ? lol THAT`S ME OUT
Feeling psychologically comfortable
I was in AWE watching this video ! The prices , quality and quantity had me excited just to see all of the highly collectable radios and stereos there . OH MY !!!
Thanks! I'm happy to hear you enjoyed my video. The prices and quality of most of the retro goodies are fantastic. I get exited myself going to the event. The only downside is that I need a bigger house because I keep buying more awesome stuff.
I wish we had events like this in Melboure Victoria Australia. I saw some Leak amps and Pre-Amps I'd love to have.
I think Australia has quite a few similar retro tech type events. I'm sure there must be something within a reasonable distance. If not, you could set up a saved search on eBay, although it can usually be a little more expensive. Keep looking; something may turn up when least expected.
designers had real style back in the day , everything looks cool including the test instruments
Yes, I agree. I recently managed to find an AVO CT378A signal generator from 1961 on eBay. I must say, it looks awesome.
@@electronicarchaeology very nice , im just old enough to remember and crave a big old bakerite avo 8 i recently watched an Australian video on the same things and they had wonderfully bright lime green radios and clock a refection of the hope and endless summers of the time
A true trip to a vintage past
Yes, for anyone interested in all sorts of retro electronics, this is one of the best events.
@@electronicarchaeology Very well ! Best regards and wishes from the shores of Mar del Plata in Argentina. Congrat !
Very nice high quality, different large category well preserves electronics. prices seem good. here in the states, we have nice, restored stuff but lots of unrestored items that looks bad. certain 30 -40's art deco / 50's - early 60's collectible colors help. nice show, I'm going to look it up if I ever go to👍 UK for a visit. Thanks for the show. NYC
Thank you. Yes, there is a wide variety of different retro electronics and great prices at the event. You have quite a few similar shows in the US and also some great RUclipsrs restoring all sorts of stuff, like Mr. Carlson's Lab. Thanks for watching, and I hope you get the chance to visit and see it all in person someday. Cheers from the UK.
So nice 👍
Thank you! Cheers!
I think ugly crazy junk is cool...👍 maybe most is not what I want, but I do see interesting things.
I agree there is a great variety of different retro collectibles. Whether you are interested in old radios or vintage telephones, the items are endless-whatever floats your boat.
Tell me I shouldn't be concerned.
Radios fantástico.

Definately going May 2025
Brilliant! The more, the merrier. Hope you find some nice things.

Sorry for the late reply to your earlier comments; I have been away. The Retro Tech UK event is held every year at the Sports Connexion, Leamington Road, Ryton-on-Dunsmore, Coventry, CV8 3FL. See the link in the video description. Yes, there are some awesome vintage electronics at the show. I'm glad you found the video interesting. Maybe there is a similar fair near you. Greetings to my Brazilian friends!
An interesting video, thanks. I need to go to an event like that as I have a load of stuff that's taking up too much room. However, I'm an ex-pat Brit living in southern France and would have to beg, steal or borrow a van to bring it over there. Of course, I'd make no profit, but I'd rather someone take it for a reasonable sum than dump it. The French don't seem all that interested in that kind of equipment. Cheers!
Glad you enjoyed my video! Yes, there is more interest in retro electronics here in the UK and also in the US for some reason. I also watch a French RUclipsr called msylvain59 who does teardowns; he has some quite interesting stuff. It might be better to sell your items as a job lot. You never know, if you do some searching, you might come across someone who would collect your gear while on holiday.
@@electronicarchaeology Thanks for your reply. I'm a member of the UK Vintage Radio Repair & Restoration Forum, and I can try offering stuff on there for any members holidaying down here (Free tea, coffee and biscuits or beer included!) I've nothing particularly collectable, but would like some of it to go to a good home. If ever you're down this way, do call in. We're about an hour south west of Toulouse. Cheers!

Thank you, yes, it’s a great event.
It appears that you were there rather earlier in the day than I was, like another commenting on this video, my presence at the event spurred on by your pair of videos from last year, as I'd not heard of it previously. If you drop by the 'Retro-spective' channel and their 'Later on in the day' video you'll see me (from the back!) plus a comment on what I picked up. The two ladies in the thumbnail for this video were the ones in charge of the stall where I got the ITT Weekend Automatic radio I mention at 'Retro-spective' and it's visible here at the 5:55 point. I was amazed to see in your haul from this year's Retro Tech UK an Ekco portable television set like one we had at our house for a while in childhood and it fascinated me as a seriously vintage item even back then, some half-a-century ago. Sadly, in subsequent decades, it became relegated to the garage at the top of the garden, like an awful lot of stuff did and only re-surfaced, minus its casing, in 2018, when we were clearing up both house and garden at my old place in preparation for a house-move, so it just ended up in the skip. I have a Flickr presence called 'The Curves Man', linked from my RUclips profile and there is an album there entitled "Found in old garage at 'Frith Knoll', Chevin Road, Belper (Spring/Summer 2018)". Unfortunately, that Ekco set isn't there but there's a whole load of other incredible stuff we turned up, including an advertisement from an 'Exchange & Mart' magazine from 1969 that helped me identify a vintage Taymar Trident 593 camping stove we also turned up in the orchard, which I used for a few days before it was scrapped, a pair of newspapers from 1969 and 1970, both with articles about Czechoslovakia, in the latter case on the subject of the Bratislavská Lýra festival of that year, where Marcela Laiferová - whom I have met after a concert by her in Petržalka, Bratislava - won the Gold Lyre, my blogging about the music from that period and part of the world at 'Girls Of The Golden East' and 'Hotlips On The Horse Tram', plus a feature in my local newspaper on a Czech Glass Fortnight in 1966 in my home city of Derby and, as an aficionado of something like retro electronics, I'm sure you'd love the pile of old 'New Scientist' magazines, my late father being a General Science teacher. That Taymar Trident 593 can be seen in action at my channel, if you're interested in a bit of cooking and coffee percolation with a vintage stove.
Thanks for the comment! It’s cool that my videos got you to go to Retro Tech UK. I’ll take a look at the 'Retro-spective' channel to see your finds. That’s a great story about the Ekco TV-sad it didn’t survive. Your Flickr album sounds interesting, especially the vintage Taymar Trident 593 camping stove. I’ll check it out!
@@electronicarchaeology You're welcome and thanks for this reply! I suppose I should also have mentioned the 'small' matter of a Pye VHF3D 'Stereophonic' valve radio that you can also see/hear in action at my RUclips channel. I hope you enjoy that, too!
styropyro: You have NO IDEA how much of an inspiration you have been over the last 15 or so years! Don't worry about making videos , your audience will ALWAYS be here! Everyone all loves you and everything you've done!

Why are there no young people ?
I can assure you that there were quite a few young collectors of all ages at the event. Although collecting vintage radios is usually an older gentleman's sport, I hope there will be even more interest from emerging future custodians of retro electronics.
I am myself a collector from gramophones and phonografs and old radio's from before 1935 buth overher in Netherland the young generation is not interessted and the prices are ridiculous low ! I have a channel on youtube with many thousands of uploads from old records from the period of 1900 till 1960. There's also verry little interest for that ! Excuse me for my poor English ! greetings from Henk !!!!
Your English is far better than my Dutch. Yes, I have noticed the prices of some retro gear have dropped quite a lot. Last year, I purchased a Bush DAC90 Bakelite radio in superb condition for only £20. Thirty years ago, it would have been at least £60. I also noticed that some gramophones were very low in price, which surprised me. I am interested in almost everything in the world of retro electronics. The younger generation seems to be more interested in retro computing. The prices of early computers, such as Commodore, are through the roof. People's interests change, and I am sure that interest in very early technology and media will return.
Yes my friend !!!! Overhere it is the same !!!! I am now 73 years old and I have always sold antiques and with that it is the same overhere or perhaps worse !!!!! The price from a grandfater clock witch costed 30 years ago 1500 pound is worth this day's hard to sell for 150 pounds !!!! Only the price of the houses is overhere sky high !!! Have a nice evening further !!!! Warmest greetings from Holland !!!
I miss going to these shows, the local ones stopped and never restarted after the lockdowns. They are a great place to find parts that are not available online these days.
One of the reasons I like to make this kind of video is for collectors who may not know about the event or, for some reason, are unable to visit. It's true that the prices are much better than online, which makes it more worthwhile to try and attend.
@@electronicarchaeology Now that i am retired i need to make an effort and start attending the ones that are not too far from Chester.
Maybe you will make it to next year's RetroTech event in Coventry. I think it shouldn't be more than a couple of hours from Chester. If not, you could check out the British Vintage Wireless Society (BVWS) website. They have events all over the UK, but you have to be a member though.

I was there this year, inspired after watching your video of the 2023 event. I drove a fair way to get there but arrived just in time for early entry and it was very busy and some good items to be had. Good to see it all again on this video.
Thank you. I'm pleased that you managed to get to the show this year. The enjoyment I get from making videos like this makes it even more worthwhile when I hear that you and others had a great time, which you would have otherwise missed.
Very interesting to see it all again. Fantastic selection of stuff. Glad you got a good haul. I got some good stuff too, though rather different 😅. Thanks 👍 😀
Thank you. Yes, it was great to return. My haul seems quite nice, especially the TMB272 TV. I've had one of these on my list for quite a while. I hope you're also happy with the stuff you scored for your channel too.
