Tune in for the best of pre-modern English history, broken down into 60 second micro-documentaries.
I am Charlotte Bowyer, a historian of the ‘exploring side streets’ and ‘forgotten buildings’ variety. Join me, as I spend my weekends (and most of my paycheque) exposing the remarkable history of South-Western England. My interests range from Roman Britain to Shakespeare, but my speciality is medieval studies: specifically, the history and language of the Anglo-Saxons.

The Abandoned Medieval Village of Lancaut
Lady, they'd tear the building down
This is just mind blowing. Just wow. Being there has to be just a whole vibe... you are making England climb my must see list! It also amuses me because here in Tucson AZ we have some "old" towns and buildings from the mid to late 1800s and I have to laugh because they're infants in comparison to other places but people make such a big deal of them.
Sorry is that the music from Oblivion playing in the background?
Cultural acceptance works when they are both civilised people. Not savages.
Going missing!!
Biblical Christianity was in England at this time because thai church dates ro AFTER the time that St Pat went to evangelize Ireland from England. The Normans dod not bring Christianity to England.
You need to go to Arundel castle
" Tolerance is the virtue of a man without Convictions "
No more churches should be turned into mosques. Englishmen stand up for your heritage!
The medieval version of skip larking...
Stunning
You are wonderful. Thank you for what you do
Our "Catholic" heritage.
I just stumbled upon your channel, love it! Thanks for sharing these videos~
The palace is on Clink Street hence clink meaning prison.
Thank you so much. I shall be visiting this
Standing in such places is thrilling for those with a love of history. I felt this when in Rome - one such was standing on the very porphry stone upon which Charlemagne had been declared Holy Roman Emperor. Countless people walk over that stone without looking at it twice.
Lol yes the famously leftist multicultural tolerant and diverse early middle ages. Oops your pathological ideology of societal suicide leaked into your history narration
I love these videos
So happy I found you. I so enjoy all your videos.
The materials makes it original
The oldest church not the oldest building as there are plenty of Roman buildings around - such as the Temple of Mithras in London or the Roman Baths at Bath.
They are ruins, not buildings. In a 2023 article, Historic England describes this as England’s oldest building
@@lady_of_the_mercians People have swum in the old ones even recently. They shouldn't.
🤤
Love your videos!
Æthelbert of Kent converted to Christianity though, didn't he? Doesn't that make his marriage to Bertha - which is believed to have been contingent upon his conversion to Christianity - a bit of an odd example of religious pluralism and tolerance? You make great content btw. I have been a subscriber since you had but a few thousand in your following! Keep up the great work!
He is thought to have converted to Christianity during St Augustine’s mission of 597 (or thereabouts, Bede isn’t hugely reliable on the date-front). This means that there seems to be a period of several years in which he was pagan and accommodated his wife’s Christian beliefs. Surely that’s a great example of peaceful co-existence?
Out of necessity for politics rather than a modern sense of "tolerance and acceptance"@@lady_of_the_mercians
@nodruj8681 shush, let the lady tell us this story. I get enough of reality from reality and it's usually harsh. I like her version, it's nicer 😊
King Ethelbert pub at Reculver at the site of a Roman fort. There are still some of the perimeter flintstone Roman wall that can be seen .
Lovely
What about the crypt of St Mary de Lode in Gloucester? Thought to be founded by King Lucius as the very first church in the country. That too is still standing... Gloucester was the Roman town Gelvum.
Marry me? We can travel the world and study ancient sites
creep
Lovely presentation -thank you .
Looks pretty proportional to me. Knee, waist, chest all seem proper. What am I missing.
Your comment about cultural and religious differences made me sick
The lengths to which a man will go to keep his wife happy, happy wife happy life. Things really haven’t changed that much.
Minerva legs. If I remember correctly he was one of the last Kings to observe Pagan beliefs during his life, before later converting to Christianity himself. Not entirely sure to be honest.
Hadrians wall ....bath houses in Bath
Both quite famously ruined
@lady_of_the_mercians still buildings 🙅♂️🫡...I wasn't trying to be funny our out, just stating we have roman/British buildings not in use but neither are most of these old churches and monasteries
@@CalMullen90 you should work on your reading comprehension
Colours are great and the camera quality seems improved. Love the Roman heritage.
Thank you! I have had more time to work on my skills (and source equipment) since starting my PhD ☺️
@@lady_of_the_mercians inspirational!
Big whoop. In Minnesota, the earliest still standing building was built in 1820. 😂
A venerable old building
Awesome as always
You're great Girl...... Keep on keeping on 👍❤️
I LOVE YOUR CONTENT!! AND YOUR VOICE❤
Thank you! ☺️
God bless
You’re my favorite educated/accurate/intelligent/goddamn-snarky-at-times history person on this app.
Me? Snarky? 🤭
You own me five farthings
How incredible!
Does tolerance of religious and cultural differences include blocking a Jew on Instagram for questioning your ignorant posing on an issue which consists of de facto support of terrorism?
Weep
Gavriel, with all due respect, have you seen the news?
Another wonderful video! Such awesome and intriguing content!
This is so cool
I have driven past it but haven't been inside. It looks beautiful.
Absolutely amazing. What a really cool piece of history.
Amazing. After watching one of your videos, I’m gonna get on my motorcycle and have a look. It was Malmesbury. Looking for the beautiful church doorway. Thanks.
