Speedy - Time For You (2022 Reunion Show)
Просмотров 1692 года назад
Speedy took to the stage at Record Junkee in Sheffield for a surprise gig (their first in 8 years) at a private event for a fan's birthday. Better footage is available elsewhere and I only recorded one song because I just wanted to experience something I never thought I would see again, a Speedy gig. They were fantastic.

Chris Helme (ex Seahorses) talks The Seahorses, John Squire and his new solo album
Просмотров 9 тыс.6 лет назад
Recorded in June 2018 on a very noisy Weston-Super-Mare seafront, we sat down with former Seahorses frontman, Chris Helme. In this wide-ranging interview we talk about how he came to join The Seahorses, why he was required to give a year's notice of his own death, and how he lost (and then found!) his new album. Apologies for the poor sound quality but we have cleaned this up as best we can.
The Matt Everitt Interview; Britpop, Menswear, The Montrose Avenue & more
Просмотров 6766 лет назад
We caught up with the popular BBC 6music presenter to talk about his musical career as the drummer in 90s bands Menswear and The Montrose Avenue and his transition to being one of the UK's top music journalists. An exclusive interview with The Britpop Revival Show on Phonic FM in June 2018, recorded on a rather dodgy phone line so apologies for the sound quality.

On the 24th May 2017 Andy Watts, former drummer with The Seahorses, was the special guest on the Britpop Revival Show on Phonic FM. To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the release of Do It Yourself we played the entire album with Andy commenting between tracks. So if this recording sounds a bit stitched together, it's because it is! You can hear the full show at www.mixcloud.com/nickex5/britpo...

This wide-ranging interview was recorded on 23rd October 2014 at the Phonic FM studios at the Phoenix Centre, Exeter where he was playing in the Ben Watts Trio. Bernard was a total gent and we spoke about his influences, his musical collaborations and how the London Marathon resulted in McAlmont & Butler reforming! It coincided with the 20th anniversary of Suede's Dog Man Star but Bernard expla...

    Contrary to popular misbelief, there are less and less guitar parts on each of John's albums. The most being on TSR, much less on SC, slightly less on DIY, even less on TCE, and even less than that on MH.

    I can't believe the contract stipulated that if he left, they'd have to pay back money to the record label. What kind of A&R incentive is that? That's a dreadful contract, that is; labels take a risk, surely. The Roses got fucked over on their contracts as well, I think someone needs to do due diligence on Squire's contracts.

      Yea but to be fair Seahorses were a great band and Chris was a good frontman, solid voice and songs like Blinded by the Sun are well written. They just came out couple years too late as the britpop scene was on its way out and they were not arty or emotionally intelligent enough to compete with The Verve or Radiohead. They were strictly from the catchy pop tune era of Oasis, Manics, blur etc. The album tho Do it yourself has stood the test of time and has an interesting mystique about it. Love is the law. ✌️

    Aw what a nice bloke. Came across as genuinely straightforward & honest too. Makes me wonder if John (Squire) is a control freak with The Stone Roses as well. That would explain why only 2 new stuffs were released over their 5 yr reunion. I wonder how Squire's control freakiery goes down with my favourite "best drummer of his generation" multi-talented Reni! Or maybe John trusts/trusted his judgement! But I do remember in the Made of Stone documentary that Ian Brown & John Squire try telling Reni how to play a reworking of a song, and he just makes a joke then gets up and goes for a break! I also remember Mani said John tried to tell him exactly what bass line to play at one point - maybe that was during John's cocaine years when his ego may have overtaken him. To be fair to John tho, I can kind of understand that when you're an artist/musician, you have an idea in your head of just how you want it done, but on the other hand people aren't machines (is this maybe why he started playing with drum machines & drum loops instead of Reni I wonder). I just think you have to treat fellow artists/musicians/humans with respect, and I'd say listen to everyone's ideas and decide as a group what's best as they all end up having to play it for yrs to come! Well, decades later in respect of the (excellent) Roses! I hope we do eventually get to find out why the Roses seem to not be able to make the promised final album... Oops I seem to have gone on way too long and turned it all into being about The Stone Roses! I'm a bit obessed with them at the moment, wondering what went wrong, and why Ian Brown has returned to his solo career and given up on The Roses. I must admit, I don't remember too much of The Seahorses at the time, but I was interested to hear what Chris Helme had to say and am now keen to listen to his back catalogue. So thanks for this! Sorry I've waffled on everyone!

      @SeahorsesJay 5 лет назад

      When you're the one writing the music, you have every right to tell your fellow musicians how to play your song. The third Roses album didn't get released because John wouldn't write for them. It seems Chris Helme can't go a day without hearing the name John Squire either!
