A real human being is a real hero. The scorpion can't help itself therefore it stabs the frog. But scorpions can hold their breath for 2 days. The driver is a delusional guy thinking he's an action hero but you can clearly see his hands shake and in the motel room shootout scene and when he wears the mask of the hero when confronting Nino.

I have to disagree. It's a 10 out of 10. I've seen it dozens of times and it's truly perfect.

I think Kierkegaard has the best answer; that we all must work out our own salvation "in fear and trembling" until we set aside our hubris and take the keap of faith once and for all.

Quick story. I saw After Hours with my wife, and she could not stop laughing. I was laughing too, but some of it was just the contagion from her. We saw it again together and didn't laugh at all!! Humor is like that. It's hard to explain why something strikes us as funny one time but not another.

The Seventh Seal is one of those movies that when it's over,even if you don't understand everything that going on you realize it is one of the best ever made.

Great analysis

Minion is making references to Kafka throughout, and if fact, the scene with the bouncer at the punk clubs is word for word from “Before the Law.” I was so obsessed with this film growing up that when I moved to NYC to attend NYU film school I looked up Joe Minion and we went out for a coffee. I gushed all over him with compliments and he confirmed the Kafka influence. He also wrote Vampire’s Kiss, a really under-rated film which probably would have been much better with a better director.

This is a very thoughtful analysis of the film. To me the philisophical/existential matter that always strikes me about this film, and leaves me asking questions is the very absurdity of proposing a game of chess against death in the first place, knowing that it is the ONLY impossible match. God may or my not exist, and this consideration is what tortures Von Sydow's character throughout the film....however, death is undeniable, and in his challenge to the grim reaper, he is engaging in an exercise in futility.

Drive Sucks an Absolute Overrated Overhyped Boring Trash !

I appreciate this film as an example of the “one crazy night out” subgenre. And for the setting of New York in the 1980’s.

Throughout the entire film, we barely learn who died. Their whole focus is on themselves, particularly Danielle’s appearance, weight, relationship status and career. Nothing that actually matters in life. They recite the mourner’s Kaddish at the end, a profound prayer about creating the kingdom of heaven on earth. Their focus on the superficial keeps them in their own little hell, in what could and should be a loving and supportive cultural community. And it leaves a sensitive young woman trying to find her way feeling suffocated and lost.

I really didn't enjoy it. It felt so slow for me and it became a mush in my head as soon as I ended waching it but now I understand a bit why other people would like it. Cool video!

I’m not gonna pretend like I’m an especially deep person because I’m not, and so I didn’t read into any of the hidden symbolism of this movie or anything, the reason I love this movie is because it’s just so batshit insane, like this is one of the weirdest movies I’ve ever seen but that’s exactly why it makes me laugh, from things like the main guy getting chased by vigilante citizens in an ice cream truck to getting turned into a newspaper statue and stolen this is just the ultimate “WTF Movie” for me, it’s so weird that it’s hard not to be entertained by it

Just watched this film for the first time and this is the first commentary I've seen since, and the perspetives and points raised here are very much appreciated. I come away seeing that Jof is the most gainful character in this story because he's both a believer and he's someone who is kind and generous. Even if wholly deluded, he is the happiest of all the story's characters, and he does everything right by everyone he meets. Jof gave Block the best resolution to his search for meaning he could hope to find.

I have lost count of how many times I have watched this film. Like another dark comedy called "Whitnail and I" I can watch both films over and over. They both capture atmosphere and characters and bizarre situations.

This is the ONLY Scorsese film I've liked. His films are so completely overrated. But this one he got right.

The big, big difference between Woody Allen and Bergman is that the former tells and the latter shows. Allen is a rambling wannabe philosopher presenting essays in movie form, whereas Bergman is an artist.

i dont think so.. i think death is trying to help him reconcile his thoughts about GOD.. death is not evil.. its his job.. he learns the secret of the chess game and still turns a blind eye to the trick.. at least momentarily and allows the other family to escape

As a Catholic this movie has interested me for a while. I like it's unique perspective in regards to my faith.
