    Great sounding close back no doubt about it. I would rate this 2nd to my fave Sony CD900ST for audio quality. One big issue that really bugged me is the ear pads smell absolutely terrible after many hours of use. I own a lot of other headphones that has either PU leather, sheep skin, suede, velor etc. that I also use for many hours but never had any of those headphones' ear pads smell after long hours of use as the one on my MT5's. I have some replacement ear pads that I can put on but I just want to point out that irritating flaw with the MT5 stock ear pads.

  • @steviesteve750
    @steviesteve750 2 года назад

    Interesting. I would suggest to you that it's not the headphones responding well to better source, it's that the yamaha phones are far more revealing of the quality of the source you are using. If you're after a neutral (think bit perfect in the analogue domain) then you'd be looking for a transducer with the characteristics of these yamahas.

    Thank you for your thoughts on these Uncle Ken. I love my MT5's; when I first got them I was unimpressed. The pads are not great and allow the drivers to get too close to your ear, this resulted in mid range overwhelming other frequencies. I swapped pads to Brainwavz hybrids which are thicker and more dense. Now the bass/mid/treble separation is just right and the soundstage much improved. I use them every day. They creak a bit so thanks for tip on wee drop of oil, I'll try that.

    I'm a newbie, so sorry if this is a dumb question. I think I have decided on the MT5's and was wondering how to determine which alternative earpads will fit them. Is there a measurement or type I should be looking for? Any info you can provide would be helpful. Thanks

    • @uncleken5247
      @uncleken5247 3 года назад

      That's the beauty of changing earpads! If the size/shape are reasonably similar, they will most likely fit. Try to go for a slightly larger size if you're not comfortable with stretching out your new earpads when putting them on. Happy swapping!

    Please do NOT buy this headphones if you are making studio recordings. They are making a clicking noise if you move your head during the session which ends up in the recordings. I have even try to use silicon lubrication but that doesn't help.

  • @andydavies27

    I was quite disappointed when I picked one up. Used with a HP laptop and Logitech Z333 speakers and really did not hear any difference at all. This might make a difference if you have already invested in a £400+ pair of headphones then it probably does make a difference as the main difference I did see was how much LOUDER to makes everything - so works as a good Headphone Amp - but if you are already using powered speakers then I couldn't tell a difference.

    They supossed to have a flat frequency response. But they are not completely flat, there is some colouring in them. The shure SHR 840 is flatter. Nowadays everybody wants a Vshape sound. Extended bass and treble, because that is exitement they say. Bullshit. When I mixdown and mastering a song I use my studio monitors, car speakers, high end speakers and different headphones with a flat frequency response. When the result is exiting on all of them you don't need coloured speakers/headphones to bring out soms frequencies. Nowadays the majority of the music is mastered with a brick limiter. It has to be punchy, loud, with no dynamics at all. Going to the max. In the 70's and 80's it was a different story. Al lot of pop, rock, jazz, etc had a lot of dynamics in them. These records sound amazing on the MSR 7 because I have one too. When something is recorded bad it sounds bad on the MSR7. MP3 or other compressed files are sound bad either. Always use loseless. It's the same with speakers. In every decent studio in the world there will be the famous Yamaha NS 10 speakers. Your hear everything on them. Every mistake made in pre or post production they will reveil. Most music sound bad on them but well recorded stuff shines. A lot of people don't know how music is supposed to sound. That's a shame. End in the end you can always use a little bit of EQ to compensate if you want to but that's not my cup of tea. Good review though

    I feel like driving planars like this from your phone is just a waste. Get yoselves some good lossless players kids, and a really good amp, and then you'll get the most out of these. When I first got my Hifiman HE400Is, I tested them with my old Ipod 180GB Classic, my older Fiio E11 amp, and that combination drove them pretty well. But I dunno about the Fostex.

  • @thiscorrosion900
    @thiscorrosion900 5 лет назад

    A lot of people don't understand that planar headphones, in general, are not efficient. They require more power to properly drive them, this is a given. And these companies can give all kinds of specs but until you get them and run them through various amps, you won't know entirely how much power you'll truly need. Running these through a phone is a total waste of time, sound, and energy. With an amp though in the chain, a good one, maybe. Who wants to plug headphones in and hear a whisper-level volume? Especially after investing money on cans as good as these? But then again, most consumers don't even know what planar is. Anyway, these were always designed first and foremost as studio monitor type pro headphones, not as "luxury" premium consumer headphones. They look like old-school 60s to 70s studio workhorse monitors.
