Steffi Graf-Helena Sukova, Berlin 1988
Steffi Graf def. Helena Sukova, Berlin 1988.
For those who love to see Steffi's topspin backhand, she uses this quite a lot in this match.

Steffi Graf - Gabriela Sabatini W92 (Graf's winners only)
Просмотров 5 тыс.4 года назад
Steffi Graf's winners during her match vs Gabriela Sabatini at W92 semis. They played many wonderful, exciting matches throughout their career. In fact Sabatini is the player who beat Steffi the most times (29-11 for Steffi in the H2H). Steffi was so alert in this one, though, dictating play right from the start.

From Hopman Cup 1993.
Nice to see Graf and Sukova being friendly with each other at the end of this match....I always got the impression they didn't seem to like each other....but maybe I was wrong. Actually, I remember after the 1991 final of the same tournament Steffi was joking around with Monica. Of course Steffi winning that match was probably a big factor in her post-match demeanor....
shriver is duck-footed
D-Zug Tempo von Steffi.
Шрайвер как дурочка. Ведет себя смешно, словно клоун😅
Steffi wasn’t about to lose to Zina again here.
I’ve read that just before this match started one thing that irritated Zina is that Steffi practiced her return of serve off of Zinas arctic earth serves. That is considered rude . It disrupts the player from serving more serves in that small window f time. Players Ike that their first few serves without fu overtook warm up the arm and shoulder. Having bet wait that extra few seconds t returned all can disrupt that warm up. Zina took her time I removing her jacket . Steffi will rush you and Zina was advised to move at her pace when serving , The rule of tennis is for the receiver to move at the pace of the server.
Wot? 😂😂
Wtf is an Arctic earth serve?
Silly little man 😂😂😂😂
Thanks for the upload❤❤❤
Shrivel purposely trying to slow things down, she was so annoying to watch
Steffi's serve looks at least 100mph.
1:04:02 --- No one did/does it better. Arguably the most difficult shot in tennis...
Steffi almost unbeatable when she serves like that, her forehand is working, and she's also adventurous at the net. Brilliant !
The 1990 semi , Steffi was really suffering with Hay fever x
Steffi at her best
Wot on earth was Pam Shriver thinking yrs l&tr 2 criticize this Goddess who took apart all including her doubles partner💯👓
Peak Steffi is unbeatable.
Graf was tremendous. It was a torture watching Shriver.
This is fantastic. Graf so aggressive!
The sheer variety of shots that Steffi displays here perfecty is just breathtaking. Soft angled forehand, inside in, inside out, lob, stop, topspin backhand, short slice backhand longline, cross, volley, you name it ...
Graf at her best when she hit the ball early on the bounce.
Actually she never did that. She waited for the ball bouncing to its maximal height and only then it is with her ferocious forehand.
@@carrerau7138 actually she did! especially on grass. She would take the ball right of the bounce as much as possible. On slower surfaces she hit the ball early and out in front as often as she could.
@@dlcc4dlng She did it only rarely. And why would she need to do this?
@@carrerau7138You can go watch plenty of RUclips videos about the advantages of hitting the ball early in tennis. Bye now
Beautiful tennis by the amazing Steffi Graf she threw everything at Gabby that day including the kitchen sink.
She would never do that. She simply gutted Sabatini with a surgeon‘s knife.
Was steffi working with Heinz already when this match took place?
She started with Heinz in the beginning of 1992. Pavel was in the players box for this match
PAM SHRIVER WHY SHE WALK LIKE A C**T
Utter brilliance from Steffi... why is the women's game so poor now...? They all play the same game, 2 handed bludgeoning crap..
wtf why did they have to go up to wherever they went up with lotsa people around
Why not?
Increíble Stefanie 👍
Graf is not the GOAT. In fact, it’s shocking how few records in the WTA world record book that she actually holds. Graf has the golden grand slam and most weeks at number one, but that’s about it. She has a shocking amount of losing head-to-head records at 9. Evert, by comparison has a losing record against 3 players, which includes her amateur years. Graf has a winning record against 3 of the all-time top 10 players. Evert holds the record with winning H2Hs against 4 of the all-time top ten. Graf does not have the most titles at the Austrian, French, Wimbledon, or the US Open. Those records belong to Williams, Evert, and Navratilova. She does not have the most GS titles on the various surfaces.. hardcourts, clay, or grass. Those records again belong to Williams, Evert, and Navratilova. She does not have the highest career winning percentage on hard, clay, grass, or carpet. Those records belong to Evert, Evert, Navratilova, and Navratilova. She’s not the best at any grand slam or on any surface. She doesn’t have the highest winning percentage all time or at the grand slams...those records belong to Court. So how again is she the GOAT? She isn’t. It’s pretty simple. Here are some of the major Open Era (not amateur) records in women's tennis and the person who holds the record: SINGLES: Most grand slam titles= S. How funny.....made so much efforts to show her down.....huge J factor. Anyways she the GOAT
Ah..revenge is sweet. Would never again lose to Zina 12-2
Sweet revenge for Steffi after Foro Italico
The best revenge for everything came at the FO 99.
So marte higis
Higis ang arte talaga
One of Steffi's best matches against Gabriela. I remember it very well. From the very first moments when I saw her hitting her forehand and hitting top spin backhands, I thought she was having a great day. If Steffi had been able to develop an even stronger serve and use her top spin backhand more often down the line, very few players would have beaten her.
Steffi always had best service at her time.
@Max E Oh I think Steffi had one of the best serves of her generation. Monica between the end of '92 and '93 had developed a very accurate and powerful serve that was really strong between '98 and 2000. Jennifer Capriati between 92 and 93 had a very good serve. I was comparing Steffi's serve with Lindsay's or the Williams sisters. In 98, 99, they had a power and precision that I never saw before.
Very few players did beat her. Steffi's serve was one of the best on tour. Her serve was never a weak point. Comparing her serve to players that came after her or right when she retired isn't really fruitful. Let's also not forget that Graf had wins against all of the players you listed in '99 just before she retired. As for her backhand, I will agree only to an extent. People often incorrectly cite it as a weakness or overstate the importance of a need for using the topspin backhand more. In this generation, yes she would need to come over it more, especially on the return. The occasional topspin backhand DTL would be useful to keep her opponents off balance, but do not underestimate the strength of her slice. As Navratilova said, Graf's biggest strength on grass was her slice. Seles also said that it was a strength.
Love to see the Serve Volley players like Helena Sukova and Claudia Kohde-Kilsch
Steffi the GOAT, its a joy to see her old matches, thanks for the video♥️
I think the weather conditions made a difference in this match. Here, the court is dry and firm and playing more like a fast hardcourt. In their semi final in 1990, it was cold and damp, allowing Zina to keep the ball low and take all the pace off in the slow conditions. Steffi was vulnerable to attacking players sometimes on cold, damp grass. She lost to McNeil in exactly those conditions in 1994 too.
One of those matches where Steffi came out on court and just overtook her opponent. I remember watching this live and when Steffi hit that backhand passing shot at 00:24 I remember thinking "This could be over quite quickly"
When Steffi played her best she was unstoppable regardless of the opponent. Seles met similar fate in the Finals of Wimbledon 92 managing to win only 3 games against Graf .
Garrison's technique was strange to watch.
@Sapam Meitai her backhand slice
Very eccentric playing style. Interesting how high up the racquet grip she held it. She felt that she got more control that way.
@@zeddeka you're right..like Tracy Austin
Shriver is ever so slow !
Yep, it's funny when Steffi tries to wrong foot her because you can't. She's still there. You get used to doing that with good players and then you forget when you play the slow ones. And it ends up being an easy put-away for them when you try to wrong foot them.
@@antinotis That's right. Shriver's game was a mixture of very good things and very bad things : great serve, volley and overhead. Poor footwork, weak backhand (unable to hit it flat) but the worst of all was the forehand : a rare underspined forehand with no pace at all
Shriver was always an awkward looking, awkward moving player...kinda like a Navratilova without the same athleticism, she did much better when she played doubles with Martina all those years!!
Navratilova was awkward moving?!
@@satyajitbanerjee3073 Meaning,..both Shriver and Navratilova served and volleyed, but Pam was less athletic and didn't move as well as Martina...is all I meant.
Wow Pam was really slow
and a total waste of her height: her serve was pathetic…a very strange rhythm and that poking BH and punching FH. Very unorthodox and ineffective. No wonder NBC didn’t air this match.
Appreciate your posting this! Any chance you can download the entire match though? Thanks very much!
Hi there, so sorry I only have the entire match in VHS so I can't upload it :(
Graf was very comfortable with Stich than Becker..
Sepertinya... coz stich has a big serve than becker
I had once read that these two (Graf and Sukova) were very friendly with one another in the late 80s and were going to play doubles together at one point. But the Czechoslovakian tennis federation paired up Sukova with an up and coming Jana Novotna instead. Can anyone confirm or deny if this is actually true or not?
It certainly didn’t seem that way, based on their handshakes at the end of matches (‘89 AU Open, ‘93 US Open just to name two)
@@ansononthetube I don't put much stock into handshakes. Because back then, the handshake was just a procedure. It's not like now where it's all about putting on a display. At the 1989 Australian Open, they had a quick handshake but they were laughing and chatting with one another during the trophy presentation. And at the very very end of this video, you can see them chatting with one another very amicably.
Ilya Kuryakin people like me didn’t expect anything. It was just an observation that they didn’t seem to have the warmest of handshakes, so was slightly surprised that they were supposedly really friendly off court, which is completely plausible. Were people like you bullied at school, so like to make a big deal about everything behind a keyboard?
Ilya Kuryakin Haha. Such big talk from a keyboard warrior. I doubt you would have bullied anyone, with your low self esteem and lack of friends.
Hi gk891, Steffi actually partnered Helena once in Brighton 1986 and they won the tournament. But I have never heard of another partnership after that. Most likely because Steffi had agreed to play with Gaby until 1990, but I am not too sure.
The fast yet effortless and smooth court speed at 20:17... wow!
Thank you for sharing!
Another great upload. Thank you.
Thank you
I really miss that aera when a lot of players had a truly unique playing style. Nowadays they basically all look the same.
That first game from Graf was beautiful. Almost like shouting “GET READY!” in your opponents face.
Totally agree!
Yes she was more then ready for Gabby beautiful to see .
