    How does this Blunstone leather compare to Redback kip leather?

  • @MarcP5267
    @MarcP5267 Месяц назад

    Ok I have 2 pairs of Redbacks that I just got. Size 8US and 8.5US. I have a Brannock device at home and I’m a 8.5D. Plus I was professionally measured a couple months ago. My left foot is slightly below 8.5, my right foot is 8.5. The Redback 8.5D are way way too wide even with thicker Darn tough socks. My feet are swimming in them. Too much movement side to side. The size 8 my right foot is too close to the front of the boot. It’s not touching but I’m conscious about it. It’s about 1/2 thumbs width. The left foot is a thumbs width which I like. Is it possible that Redbacks are not a good boot for my feet?

      It depends. There is no standard - a Thursday Boots size 10 US is different than Blundstone US 10. I recently reviewed a pair of boots that recommended adding a half size because they run small. Check out any size guide and, if they offer free shipping and returns, order multiple sizes to find the right size.

    My pain point was the front, back totally fine but the front left my shins so bruised & swollen I couldn't face touching them for a fortnight & that was after 3 -4 hours mostly seated, with maybe 1 hour mooching round a supermarket. That was two months ago, I've only managed to wear them a couple more times due to previous bruising not having healed & the pain forcing me to keep walking to a minimum. I think these will last a long time at the rate I'm going with breaking them in. I'll be lucky if I achieve that by the end of the year.

      Come across a '90s pair of Docs on eBay or thrifting and you'll immediately see the difference vs. today's boots. But today's Dr. Martens do seem to be better made than the ones from 10 years ago. I think they've fixed some of their quality issues, but the materials are very different than 'old' Docs.

  • @lars5288
    @lars5288 5 месяцев назад

    I think it's not correct to say the quality was better when they were made in England. It's true they had quality problems during 2000-2015 maybe. I bought Martens originally from England in the Nineties. Those were absolutely comparable to what you get nowadays from the asian made ones. During the period with quality problems my smooth leather ones only lasted a couple of days and the leather cracked. I have bought four pairs again in the last two years and they are of the same quality like in the nineties. I would advise to get any leather but not the smooth version. All other leathers are more durable and easier to break in. The Cons are the classic sole design, which is run down quickly (but so did the 90s Docs too) and that they are grotesquely overpriced. During the the nineties you paid roughly about 40-50€ for a pair, and now they want up to 200€ (i only buy them when discounted to around 80-110€, i think nobody buys them for the regular price. The same goes for solovair, they even want more. About 199-220€ and they never give discount. That is simply too much, their quality isn't better. Considering they are made the old fashioned way, then you wonder how the same quality magically can quadruple in price. That is something where Apple could still learn something from. All in all Martens are probably the best goodyear welted shoes you can get for around 100€ nowadays. All competition in that price range doesn't have a welted sole and are made overseas too. Thinking about that those were shoes for everyone once and have become an expensive fashion item is sad.

    • @ChelseaBootReview
      @ChelseaBootReview 5 месяцев назад

      Thanks for sharing your experience with Dr. Martens. While the recent pairs seem to have fixed some of the quality issues of 10 years ago, the older 90's Docs did have more dense soles and thicker leather. I found an old pair in a second-hand shop and was surprised by the difference. (If only they'd been my size!) But I've seen Rose Anvil cut a newly made pair of Made in England Docs and they definitly don't have better quality than those made overseas. Solovairs are on my list to review. Lots of good press these days - and credit for being the original maker of Docs. Goodyear welt or not, it's tough to spend ~120€ for a resole on an 90€ boot!

But...the Duke's are built on a pretty narrow last - so they might be a great fit if you prefer them Take the women's size and subtract 1.5 to find the men's size. And remember that Thursday's recommends you size down a half size to find your fit. So, if you're an 8.5 US Women's, subtract 1/2 size as Thursday's recommends and another 1.5 for the conversion = 6.5. Thursday's Dukes come in sizes 6-16 D width (US) Let me know how it goes!

Maybe Thurday Boots will weigh in - www.youtube.com/@Thursdayboots It's also tough to say what the expected life of the stormking sole is. But they should last for years of normal wear. Honstely, I don't think the failpoint is the sole - they're rugged and well made. And, if they do fail, they're goodyear welted and replaceable - but that might cost as much as a new pair. At $199, I haven't found a boot company that offers a better value than Thursday Boots!

    While i dislike chealsea boots especially for men. This was a great video, thank you!!! Chealsea boots in my opinion cut off at an awkward height and create a weird look especially when sitting or even walking with a good stride. As well again my opinion the elastic material is a failure point. I dont mind resoling my boots but that elastic to me is just as bad as putting zippers on boots. 🤷‍♂️ I much prefer either a high shaft boot like a cowboy boot even with a low heel. Or a lace up boot that will be tight up against my leg. Granted i also prefer an 8" shaft. By this comment you can probably guess roughly my background 😂 Again thank you for the video!! Just advice, the set, editing, content, delivery is good, im just getting distracted by an overly gesticulating headless torso. I find that the more formal the boot, the narrower the width. Thursday boots are an example of something that's much more narrower than the Blundstone 550s. Of the standard Chelseas, the Blundstone 550 is the widest I've found. The 1/2 sizes are the same length but wider than the whole sizes. If you're looking for something wider, check out some of the pro series boots. The Timberland Pros come in Wide (but not traditionally sized) and the Redwing Heritage - Style 3190 - comes up to EE. I reviewed anything wider. One recommendation is to measure the width of your foot and check out the size charts. There isn't a US standard - tho the Japanese sizing is usually in actual centemeters.

      Birkenstock Birmingham boots or Blundstone Lug boots.

    The 500 series fit me better for someone with low volume wide feet. The 550 have much better color selection though.

      It's interesting how they compete against each other. The boots are so similar but built on different lasts which makes them fit differently.

    Most chelsea boots have an identity problem. Bad upper and outsole match, dressy or casual. Only the dress chelseas have a good look. I'd rather just wear an actual heritage boot if I wanted traction

      Working on the full review of these now and I agree. They're a bit inbetween. Too nice for bad weather, not nice enough for dress.

      @@applejuice9468 I'd love to but haven't had the chance yet. The Craftsman has a great silloette and the Comfort Goodwood looks like an amazing daily driver.

    If you live in a tropical and humid environment, the 550 might feel hot on the feet. That’s why when my 550 broke down, I opted for the 500. Blundstones are not dress boots so I don’t expect plushness on my feet. I just wear slightly thicker socks. For my Alden and Viberg dress boots I usually wear thinner socks. I think Blundstone fans should have both 500 and 550, in different colors 😊 Eventually, I found a cobbler who could properly resole my old broken Blundstones with lugged Vibram outsoles. Now I have 3 pairs of Blunnies!

      I wish there was a way to 'test' if they were warmer or not. I've had both the 500s and 550s and didn't feel the 550s to be warmer. One thing I hadn't thought of though - If you rotate the 550s do they 'recover' as quickly as other boots or does the inner layer slow them from drying out.

      There’s a guy in Canada repairs all boots and Blundstone hand stitched.
