How to play fast jazz on the drums

In this video I unload a few of my thoughts on uptempo comping. There are many approaches out there and it's important that we all find our own path and eventually develop a unique working vocabulary. #uptempo #fastjazz #drumtutorial #maxroach #phillyjoejones #arthurtaylor #comping #bebop #bebopjazz #drumlessons #drumsolo

Jazz drum solo lesson. Using the simplest things is often the best. In this video, I just demonstrate using eighth note triplets with downbeat and upbeat accents. #buddyrich #genekrupa #drumlesson #drumtutorial #drumsolo #maxroach

Here's a snippet of me playing a rather uptempo solo with the Grant Stewart Quartet at Smalls Jazz Club in September 2024. #drumsolo #jasontiemann #smallslive #smallsjazzclub #bosphoruscymbals #uptempo #maxroach #buddyrich #jazzdrummer
Is that a Tama slp fat spruce? I have the same drums, they’re fantastic! Amazing playing and lesson as well.
You are great, I can’t believe the number of people that can play, but they just don’t have the feel, you’ve got it,we were listening to you, and my wife turned to me and said, now i wanna learn how to play the drums! I don’t know why, but a good drummer has that effect on people.
Jason, saw you last weekend, Saturday night 7:30 at Smalls, you are with out a doubt the best I’ve ever seen, and I’ve seen a lot, you’ve got a new fan, I’m going to follow you
We caught this guy at Smalls, the best drummer I have ever seen, he was with Jerry B 1/18/25 7:30 at smalls
This is a great, concise lesson on jazz soloing. Also, I now want to start a band called Lick-based Society.
Probably i sounds like a newbie but when you start talking and using the 6th role.. are you just changing the accent for the melody?
Hey Jason, excellent lesson my man. One question though, what do you do with your left foot, nobody seems to cover this point. Best Paul
Awesome! But do you have this written out somewhere? I wish I could just listen and watch and try it, but I require reading to get grasp
As soon as the holidays are over I’ll be back to creating these videos. I’ll try to put something down in pdf format then. Until then, have fun and happy new year
Didnt Mitch do something similar in Hey Joe?
Radically smooth, thank you!
Thank you for this! I’ve been working on it since you posted it and its helped me a ton get more fluent around the kit!
super interesting --sending to my drummer friend
Jason, I’m new to the channel and wondering how much brush work you’ve discussed because I’m clueless
This is the "Nica's Tempo" drum solo intro from the album Drum Suite by Art Blakey. My compliments Jason, your executed it perfectly. ❤
I love this lesson! This is exactly what I need in the small amount of time that I have. If you were to do a video isolating the triplets, and the 16ths I would be grateful!!
Great exercise. Thanks!
swag
Love the lessons, i can tell from your attire that you shed like i do. Its cold but we still gotta get it in, lol.
Yep. lol
Hey Jason, what kit are you using for these videos? Sounds ace
Yamaha maple custom absolute. Last batch made in Osaka Japan. 2012-2013 maybe? 12 14 18bass 6.5 aluminum recording custom snare. Remo coated ambassadors on all batter surfaces. No muffling of any sort.
What a perfect Jazz sound from that kit, love this concept too.
This is amazing dude. Ty 🔥🔥🔥🔥👍🏽
Great stuff! As a great jazz trumpeter, Kris Eans, once told me: "Soloing is like talking". Or, as you put it, singing (a melody)
Great exercise! Tricky with those odd groupings
Have fun!!!
Perfect drum lesson. Happy to find your channel and subscribe.
I like this exercise. I will definitely try it out later. Thank you so much for posting.
Enjoy!
Nice hat:)) “Мишка” in Russian(sounds Mishka)
LOL. I stole it from my kids
Great touch on them drums and the tone of your kit is sweet!
right on.
Love it! Thanks
Thank you!!
I know that one of the big ideas is that with fluidity and independence and a good sense for the pulse, anything is possible, but I do have an (in some sense) easily avoidable question that relates to this. It's basically preference, but I like to have my highest tom in the middle. A floor tom to my right is still the lowest tom. I have basically swapped the two toms in the standard order 5-piece rig, and I know this isn't unheard of for setups. For moving up and down in line naively, I do genuinely think your left- and right-hand leads capture the essence of what feels right. But if I wanted to 'descend' snare -> highest tom -> middle tom (to its left) -> floor tom (furthest right), do you have any specific stickings in mind? Where do you imagine you would place your doubles/diddles to make it feel comfortable with those direction changes as we go?
Thanks for your question. I would say the stickings for that movement are very personal. This scheme was devised for a bebop configuration. I'd suggest to experiment with this and see what flows best for you.
A number series exercise. I like this idea. It's actually an idea that invites an infinite amount of ideas. It must get more interesting if one chooses to get the cymbals involved. Makes me think of Dave Weckl. Your content is interesting Jason.
Thanks, glad you liked it!
Great stuff. Thanks for that!!
Glad you liked it!
No real discernible difference Both sound fine
Helpful and motivating content as always. Fascinated by the 2 versions / one a more rounded/open/triplet-y beat (1••2•a3••4•a, like Billy Higgins on Eastern Rebellion or Sidewinder records, Bruno carr on Soul Clinic) versus version two with extremely tight spacing (almost a 16th-based pulse, 1•••2••a3•••4••a, like Philly Joe and Cobb… much tighter, crisp, technical players IMO). Appreciate the explanation. Working hard on the rounded/relaxed cymbal beat from Higgins as I need a better relaxed feel. Looser grip at the index/thumb fulcrum makes it happen for me + playing “through” the cymbal. Always appreciate your nylon + brighter ride NY sound out ahead of the band too. Dark cymbals (chasing Tony’s dark ride..) with fading wood tips are too popular in Indy.
@@gabrielglover1889 thanks brother. Glad it was helpful. Hoping all is well
Hi, cool lesson. What would that look like written out? Any help?
2 eight notes with 1 eight note rest in between (swing feel)
@@Ibradrums Thanks Jason, I figured it out after a bit and now I've got it going on! Very cool
Great content! I like the fact that you are singing the melody...this is so overlooked by most drummers and to me is the best way to connect your playing to the music. Keep it up!
This is great!
Fantastic! Thank You
@@natebrown7293 thank you!!!
Tony Williams in the uptempo is pretty insane.
Jazz guitarists, jazz bassists, jazz saxophonists. Stop playing licks. It's conversational.
Helpful. Thanks
❤
Thank you !
Great video lesson Want to hear more
Thanks! I have lots more videos planned!
Nice rudiments, man! Was that Louis Bellson's book behind you in the closing shot? I like your advice to take something simple and chew on it or digest it for a long time. Thanks for posting!
Thanks! The book in the back of the shot is 4-way coordination by Marvin Dahlgren and Elliot Fine
Oh ya brother!
Nice job good technique and good teacher
Thank you! 😃
Thanks a lot
my pleasure!
Yeah, Jason! Valuable lesson.
I'm not a drummer but I love seeing the thought process of incredible musicians. Thanks for this
Thanks...
