ERIK SATIE Les Fil Des Étoiles - Prelude no2 L'Initiation. Realised with SWAM string sections
My Principle reason for doing this arrangement of the second prelude - L'Initiation, is that I wanted to hear how Satie’s very simple, plain and innovative music from this period would sound with an arrangement for strings. When one considers that it was composed by a 25 year old Satie in 1891, it demonstrates his radical harmonic invention and distinct departure from the stylistic idioms of it’s time. Roland Manuel made full orchestral versions of the first and third preludes. There are no dynamic markings on the original score and in keeping with the feel of the score I have kept this aspect within bounds. Please note the typo "fils" rather than the correct "fil" crept into the proceedi...

Trautonium Subharmonics With AJH Synth Next Phase Modules.

      Not wishing to dissapoint, it has no keyboard but a linear controller that you can see in other videos, also it took a long time for me to obtain this cicuitry as it was custom built by trautoniks. It also takes a great deal of practice to be able to play with both manuals at the same time. The sound of these circuits is indeed unique, but there are other more modern linear controllers out there, the Llinstrument and Haken Continuum being two ofd the better examples at different prices. Thanks for your approval though.

    If you play two notes on the same manual, which note will sound? The lowest, highest or the one that was played secondly?

  • @SuperLucas871
    @SuperLucas871 7 лет назад

    Very interesting indeed to see how much the waveform changes when the gain knob is turned, I guess this is how the older tube trautonium's trumpet-like sounds were 'gained', right? I still have some questions though: if you turn the gain knob up, and then change the volume knob (located left of the gain knob) does the timbre (waveform) change again, or only the volume? a very similar question: if you change the pressure on the 'manual' (which serves as a big volume knob) does the waveform again change, or only the volume? The trumpet-like sounds on the older trautoniums sounded the way they did because the oscillators gave a mellow sound (waveform) at lower pressure and suddenly a very sharp brassy sound (distortion) when increasing the pressure on the manual, so I can imagine it works the same on your model...(?). In other words there was (is) a great variety in waveform depending of the used pressure.

    • @GMS267
      @GMS267 6 лет назад

      I Think I must have missed your questions in email notification, apologies for late reply. The timbre remains pretty constant at varying pressures, if you take a look at this video from Der Trautonist: ruclips.net/video/qtlyAWjWXcU/видео.html There is mention of circuitry in the valve based mixtur-trautonium that was not replicated in the semiconductor version. Mention is made of it giving a kick to the sound at onset, so I would imagine thaty this drove the input harder, but to be honest, I'm not sure myself how this worked. Mention is also made that he had an external device to replicate this on the semiconductor version, but it wasn't as effective.

    • @SuperLucas871
      @SuperLucas871 6 лет назад

      Thank you for your reply! I see you posted a similar question below the trumpet-sounds video. A technical question if I may. what is the octave span width on your instrument (distance from tongue till same tongue octave higher)? I read it was originally 18cm. But I think it's more like 23cm on your instrument right? The Trautoniks website says that the 4 octave manual is around 90cm long, which should have given 5 octaves if you take the original spacings mentioned in the old volkstrautonium manuals.

    thank you so much for the video, very interesting! But concerning the calculations in cents you made some mistakes I think. For example C5= 1046.5 Hz, on the trautonium it's the same (2093/2). So I'm not sure why you put C6+1 in the description. The same is true for subharmonic 8 and 16. On both 'piano' and trautonium: 261.63 and 130.81 Hz. All the examples with differences are close but not correct: for example F4: 698.5hz, the trautonium: 697.7 hz (2093/3): -2 not -3. A better example is subharmonic 5: on a 'piano': 415.3Hz on a trautonium: 418.6 So they are certainly not the same (14 cents difference) According to my calculations (which are also found on several websites: 1 c7, 2 c6 3 f5-2, 4 c5, 5 g#4+14, 6 f4-2, 7 d4+31, 8 c4, 9 a#3-4, 10 g#3+14, 11 f#3+49, 12 f3-2, 13 e3-41, 14 d3+31, 15 c#3+12, 16 c3, 17 b2-5, 18 a#2-4, 19 a2+2, 20 g#2+14, 21 g2+29, 22 f#2+49, 23 f#2-28, 24 f2-2.

      As stated, these figures were derived from an A-113 module subharmonic row in melodyne. I cannot account for why it should have these discrepancies, other than theory and real world measurements. Which websites, could you post some links?

    • @SuperLucas871
      @SuperLucas871 7 лет назад

      there is an image on this website showing all deviations in cents for the harmonics, for the subharmonics you just have to change the + into - and the other way around: andrewmeronek.com/music-tools/blue-notes-and-the-harmonic-series/ Now that I think of it, it's only logical that an analog instrument like the trautonium can never perfectly represent all these tones up to the accuracy of a single cent, in fact it did for most of the subharmonics on your instrument which I think is already quite amazing.

    I knew that the oscillators of the early trautonium didn't produce a linear sawtooth, neither the neon bulb ones nor the thyratron based ones. But I really did not expect such a spike-ish waveform from a semiconductor trautonium - how interesting… ^^ Thank you for the suggested read, it was unknown to me. An important source for Thomas Patteson which he cites quite often is the german book 'Elektrische Klangmaschienen' from Peter Donhauser, which should also be available free - I hope the link works. In the appendix one can find the schematic of the Telefunken-'Volks'trautonium on page 251 of the PDF (p. 249 of the book). www.doabooks.org/doab?func=fulltext&rid=15264

      Thanks for the link Marcus. I don't have enough German to do it justice, but on initial inspection it has a lot of documentation and sources so it will be very useful. Peter also appears to go into more detail on events in the Nazi era so I'm interested in finding out more on that too. A shame so little survives of Jörg Mager's inventions, I'm fascinated by the Sphäraphon, it looks like some type of medical diagnostic aparatus. One can only guess at the sound. I was surprised to see how divergent the trautonium's waveforms can be myself, it's barely a sawtooth at all at some settings. Very musical though, which is what appeals.

    Great documentation, as always. I can confirm that Oskar Sala was the first one to implement subharmonics in a musical instrument. When implementing the frequency divider using a microcontroller (which is what I do as of now) it is possible to adapt the whole scale to well-tempered instruments. However, it is no longer a pure undertone row if you do so.

For bespoke electronics they weren't that expensive, you'd easily pay the same for a second hand 303 in half decent condition as one, maybe both modules on a bad day. Wow very nice, thanks for sharing. Could you give a little information about that rich reverberation?

      Thanks Sytse W. The reverb being used is audioease Altiverb, though in an older version that doesn't require an ilok authorisation key. They take up a usb port and have come in for a slamming on gearslutz from time to time when people haven't been able to use their software.

    This thing is beyond lush. I don't care if it's the size of the Titanic! I want one - well the only one there is. Haha.

    Great video, can we expect some videos of the Schlagwerk and subharmonic oscillators any time soon?

      Thanks Super Lucas, I hope to able to upload some info on the subharmonic generator when I have time. As for the schlagwerk, I achieve the same results with Analogue Systems and Synth Tech envelope generators.
