IMHO battles, as well as entire wars, are often won by those commanding one side being willing to do things that those of us that have a "human conscious" would not or could not do. A couple examples of this on the Axis side during world war two are the concentration camps set up by the Nazis and prisons set up by the Japanese were they experimented on people for biological warfare. I believe two examples on the Allies side could be the carpet/fire bombing of cities controlled by the Axis s well as the dropping of the two atomic bombs. While such actions are war crimes in both regular people and/or the military powers that be, in war there seems to be kind of sliding scale of what is moral or immoral depending on the level of threat and carnage one is dealing with. In Orson Scott Card's book Ender's Game, child officer named Andrew "Ender" Wiggin wipes out an entire race of insect like aliens called "Formics" in order stop them from being a threat to human beings.
